Human placenta samples obtained at 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks of gestation and at full term were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The chorionic villi at early stages of gestation exhibited abundant microvilli on the free surface of the syncytium. This investigation was done to determine whether dipicolinic acid was present in the Legionnaires' disease bacterium. A colorimetric assay for dipicolinic acid was done and the results for the bacterium were compared with those obtained for Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Dipicolinic acid was not detected in the Legionnaires' disease bacterium. This demonstrated that the bacterium was unable to produce typical bacterial endospores under the experimental conditions examined.

The aim of the present study has been to correlate the surface appearance of pitted, fluorosed enamel in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with the microradiographic features of the underlying tissue. Porphyria cutanea tarda and erythropoietic protoporphyria have common morphological features. Six patients with porphyria cutanea tarda and three patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria were studied with the electron microscope. An electron microscopic study of Mendes da Costa's disease (MCD) has been undertaken to determine whether this disease is a variant of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica, or should be classified as a separate disease entity. It was shown that in MCD lacunae occur in the lower layers of the epidermis, in the presence of normal anchoring fibrils. In the recessive form of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica (EBD), however, no lacunae were found in the epidermis, and anchoring fibrils were absent. A mycobacteriocin (M12) produced by Mycobacterium smegmatic ATCC 25855 was partially purified by ammonium sulphate precipitation followed by DEAE-cellulose chromatography and Sephadex G100 chromatography. Scanning electron microscopic investigations were performed on the maxillary sinus mucosa of five healthy persons and seven patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis. The occurrence of previously undescribed hair-like filaments in one case of chronic maxillary sinusitis is presented. This study was undertaken to assess the specificity of split renal basement membranes in hereditary nephritis (HN).
