RATIONALE: The relationship between thymic tumors and Sjögren syndrome (SjS) is unknown, and surgical resection has not been optimized. Especially, thymic carcinoma with autoimmune disease is rare. Analysis of SS-A52, germinal centers, plasma cells, and Foxp3+ Treg in thymic carcinoma has never been reported, and their pathological roles in causing SjS have not been studied.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 78-year-old man presented with sputum production and xerostomia while asleep. Chest computed tomography showed a homogeneous and hypodense mass in the anterosuperior mediastinum. Serum levels of the an

The aim is to review the features of 117 primary squamous cell carcinomas of thyroid which meet the histological criteria of the World Health Organization classification of endocrine tumours. The carcinomas occur in 83 women and 34 men (female to male ratio is 2.4 to 1) and with median age at presentation of 64. Half of these squamous cell carcinomas of thyroid were moderately differentiated. PAX-8 protein is a sensitive marker for confirming the thyroid origin of the carcinoma. The carcinoma is also positive for p63, p40, cytokeratins 5/6, 7,19 and negative for cytokeratins 20 and 10/13. P53

Vulval squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) can arise through two distinct pathways [human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated and HPV-independent], and these VSCC variants are recognised as different disease entities on the basis of different aetiologies, morphological features, molecular events during oncogenesis, precursor lesions, prognosis, and response to treatment. The precursor of HPV-associated VSCC, variously referred to as high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) [vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) 2/3] or usual-type VIN, is morphologically identical to the more common HSIL (cerv

Thymic epithelial tumours are rare malignancies of the anterior superior mediastinum. Several studies have analysed the presence of c-KIT mutations in thymic carcinoma. Immunohistochemical c-KIT expression and mutations in exons 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 17, and 18 of the KIT gene and in the promoter region of the TERT gene (chr5, 1,295,228C>T/A and 1,295,250C>T) were analysed by PCR based direct sequencing using representative formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumour samples of 18 thymic carcinomas. Of 18 patients, 4 test samples were excluded from the study due to inadequate DNA quality. Of 14 patien

Complete response of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) monotherapy is rare. Here, we encountered an elderly patient who showed complete response of NSCLC following treatment with pembrolizumab. An 84-year-old man with a history of bloody sputum for several weeks visited a general physician. At that time, a chest X-ray revealed a tumor shadow in the left middle lung field, and the patient was referred to our hospital. Following transbronchial biopsy, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Expression of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1)

In this case study, we present an unusual case with squamous cell carcinoma surrounding the penis involving foreskin and glans of penis. In addition, multiple satellite nodules were noted in the pubis. A 57-year-old circumcised heterosexual male patient presented with a penile lesion existing for 10 years. At the same time, he was referred to an outpatient memory clinic because of persistent subjective memory complaints associated with depression and anxiety. The patient was operated under general anaesthesia. The lesion was resected circumferentially with macroscopic clearance, resulting in c

BACKGROUND: The choroid is the most common site for intraocular tumor metastasis because of its abundant vascular supply. However, choroidal metastasis in penile cancer is highly unusual. Here, we report the first case of diagnosis of choroidal metastasis at presentation in a patient with penile squamous cell carcinoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Asian man with a 3-year history of penile cancer presented with metastasis in the right intraocular sites. Magnetic resonance imaging showed hyperintensity in the T1-weighted images and hypointensity in the T2-weighted images of the right eye.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare group of diseases caused by genetic variants in skin structural proteins. EB is characterized by varying degrees of skin fragility, blisters and impaired wound healing, and is classified based on the ultrastructural levels of skin cleavage-simplex, junctional, dystrophic, and Kindler Syndrome. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most severe complication and most common cause of death of patients with EB, particularly in those with recessive dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB). To date, the first line of treatment of SCC in patients with RDEB is surgery

Vulvar carcinomas represent 4% of all gynaecological cancers with 838 new cases in France in 2018. The precursor lesions of vulvar carcinomas are differentiated vulvar intraepithelial lesion (dVIN) in a context of lichen sclerosus and vulvar high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) link to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Three typical clinical forms of HSIL are described: the Bowenoid papulosis, the Bowen's disease and the confluent VIN. Histopathology cannot differentiate effectively these two types of lesions. P16 and P53 immunostaining are valuable tools to respectively asses

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To quantify the survival impact of prolongation of definitive radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer in a national, modern cohort, and to identify predictive factors for prolongation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Cancer Database was queried for adults with non-metastatic cancer of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynx, or hypopharynx diagnosed 2004-2015, treated with definitive RT to 66-70 Gy in 30-35 fractions at 2-2.2 Gy per fraction. Multivariable Cox regression and propensity score matching were used to model the survival impact of RT prolongation, adjusti

The management of hypopharyngeal cancer is challenging because of poor patient survival and the potential effects of treatment on breathing, voice and swallowing. In general, early stage hypopharyngeal cancer can be primarily treated by radiotherapy or conservative transoral or open surgery, whereas advanced stage hypopharyngeal cancer can be treated by non-surgical protocols if the patient has no loss of functions (dysfunctional larynx) and/or cartilage invasion (T4a). Factors to determine individualized patient treatment include resectability, tumour volume, distant metastases, comorbidity,

Nivolumab is a checkpoint inhibiting immunotherapeutic agent prescribed for the treatment of resistant cancers. Many immune-related adverse effects including neurological effects have been described, but central nervous system (CNS) toxicities are rarely reported. We present a 59-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of treatment-resistant, progressive, laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. She received nivolumab and presented with gradual weakness, confusion, and progressive dyspnea. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed multifocal cerebral demyelination, primarily involving the pariet

Contrary to the impression that non-melanoma skin cancer is a banal and relatively trivial malignancy it causes about 1% of all cancer deaths. Cutaneous Squamous Cell carcinoma (CuSCC) make up a significant part of these deaths either from incurable loco-regional disease or metastatic disease. As is typical of the disease itself, these patients are often of advanced age, but the immunocompromised from organ transplantation or haematological malignancy are important populations. Systemic therapies have a long history in palliative therapy for CuSCC, but not a particularly extensively studied on

This case report is about a 75-year-old man, who developed a subungual squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) after having a wooden splint sitting under his fingernail for 20 years. There were no signs of infection, inflammation or tumour. The splint was removed, and histology indicated SCC. The patient underwent amputation, and histological analysis confirmed SCC without bone involvement. Subungual SCC is often misdiagnosed with delayed treatment as a consequence, and it gives a wide variety of symptoms. Treatment includes Mohs surgery and marginal excision. If SCC is diagnosed early, extensive surger

BACKGROUND: Extended sleeve lobectomy is rarely applied to pulmonary surgery for primary lung cancer to avoid a pneumonectomy. As there is a size discrepancy between main bronchus and peripheral bronchus, ingenuity to improve anastomosis is required in the bronchoplasty. We report herein a case in which successful reconstruction of extended sleeve lobectomy with bronchial wall flap.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 64-year-old man suffering from hemoptysis, cough, mild fever and dyspnea. His computed tomography (CT) scan showed solid tumor of 40 mm in diameter in left lower bronchus, which o

The prevalence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is increasing globally while the prevalence of other head and neck cancers is decreasing. The most likely reasons for this are a decreasing influence of smoking and the growing relevance of infections with the human papilloma virus (HPV) as a risk factor. A rise in the HPV-attributable fraction (HPV-AF) of OPSCC has been observed in many countries, yet a comprehensive review of prevalence rates and trends in Germany is lacking. To determine the current HPV-AF of OPSCC in Germany and to assess whether it has changed during the last
