Association of inflammation and nutrition-based indicators and diabetic foot ulcers: a cross-sectional study and a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation and nutrition status have emerged as important factors in impaired wound healing in diabetes. However, the association between inflammation and nutrition-based indicators and diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) has not been reported. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional study based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database and a clinical retrospective study to investigate the association between the inflammation and nutrition-based indicators and DFU. We analyzed data from 31,126 individuals in the NHANES data between 1999 and 2004. Inflamm

Hidden Malnutrition in Overweight and Obese Individuals with Chronic Heart Failure: Insights from the Pro-HEART Trial.

Background/Objectives: Poor nutritional status and cachexia have been well-documented as predictors of adverse outcomes in individuals with chronic heart failure (HF). However, despite obesity being a common observation in this patient population, a growing body of evidence indicates that these individuals may still suffer from nutrient deficiencies and malnutrition. This study aimed to characterize the food and nutrient intake of participants enrolled in the Pro-HEART clinical trial-a study evaluating dietary interventions in overweight and obese individuals with HF-and to compare their consu…

Diagnostic criteria for severe acute malnutrition and fatal outcomes in children aged 6-59 months, Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: To determine factors associated with inpatient death among a cohort of children aged 6-59 months with severe acute malnutrition in north-western Nigeria. METHODS: Our observational study used routine programmatic data of all children aged 6-59 months admitted to two inpatient facilities in Katsina State with severe acute malnutrition in 2022. We assessed nutritional status at admission by weight-for-height z-score (WHZ), mid-upper-arm circumference (MUAC) and bilateral nutritional oedema using World Health Organization definitions. We used Cox-proportional hazard models to identify…

The clinical value of nutritional and inflammatory indicators in predicting pneumonia among patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.

Immunosuppression and malnutrition play pivotal roles in the complications of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and are intricately linked to the development of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP). Inflammatory markers, including NLR (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio), SII (systemic immune inflammation index), SIRI (systemic inflammatory response index), and SIS (systemic inflammation score), along with nutritional indexes such as CONUT (controlling nutritional status) and PNI (prognostic nutritional index), are crucial indicators influencing the inflammatory state following ICH. In this study, our o…

Effectiveness of Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition and Subjective Global Assessment for diagnosing malnutrition and predicting wound healing in patients with diabetic foot ulcers.

Malnutrition significantly hampers wound healing processes. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) in diagnosing malnutrition and predicting wound healing in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). GLIM criteria were evaluated for sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive predictive value, negative predictive value and kappa (κ) against SGA as the reference. Modified Poisson regression model and the DeLong test investigated the association between malnutrition and non-healing ulcers ov

Are Maternal Dietary Patterns During Pregnancy Associated with the Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus? A Systematic Review of Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maternal nutritional status is a "key" contributor to Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). However, the role of maternal dietary patterns (DPs) during pregnancy remains poorly understood. Thus, we conducted a systematic review to assess associations between "a posteriori-derived" DPs and GDM. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Scopus for cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies published until June 2024. A total of twenty-eight studies involving 39,735 pregnant women were included, and their quality was eval…

The Urgent Need for Nutritional Medical Care in Geriatric Patients-Malnutrition in Nursing Homes.

Patients aged 65 and over who are accommodated in hospitals and nursing homes are at high risk of malnutrition and often show signs of it. The future relevance of this problem becomes clear, especially in view of the demographic development of the coming years and decades. In this study, the correlation between malnutrition, hypoalbuminemia, anemia, elevated CRP, and low transferrin levels, as well as mortality in seniors between 65 and 100 years, should be revealed. Therefore, the prevalence of disease-specific malnutrition (DRM), according to the criteria of the guidelines of the German Soci
