Participation of Ghanaian pregnant women in an antimalarial drug trial: willingness, experiences and perceptions.

BACKGROUND: With increasing orientation towards including pregnant women in clinical trials, investigators must conduct culturally acceptable research to aid recruitment and retention. This study reports experiences and perceptions of Ghanaian pregnant women regarding their participation in a clinical trial. METHODS: From October to December 2012, 45 in-depth interviews were conducted among pregnant women and their male partners regarding their experiences and perceptions of cli…

Exploring patients' perceptions and experiences of treatments for the prevention of variceal bleeding: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The most common fatal complication of liver cirrhosis is haemorrhaging caused by variceal rupture. The prevention of the first variceal bleed is, therefore, an important clinical goal. Little is known about patients' experience of treatments geared towards this, or of their perceptions of treatments prior to being exposed to them. AIMS: To explore the factors impacting patient preference for, and actual experience of carvedilol and variceal band ligation. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 30 patients from across the UK at baseline, prior to random allocation …

Enablers and barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake: An international study of perceptions and intentions.

The development of COVID-19 vaccines is occurring at unprecedented speeds, but require high coverage rates to be successful. This research examines individuals' psychological beliefs that may act as enablers and barriers to vaccination intentions. Using the health beliefs model as a guide to our conceptual framework, we explore factors influencing vaccine hesitancy and health beliefs regarding risks and severity of the disease, along with individual variables such as income, age, religion, altruism, and collectivism. A questionnaire using newly created measures for various antecedents provided

This can lead to … ledge, and awareness of breast density and breast cancer risk and of density notification laws, and perceptions of appropriate follow-up behaviors for their patients who received density notifications. The relationship between reflex eye realignment and the percept of single vision in young children.

Effective binocular vision is dependent on both motor and perceptual function. Young children undergo development of both components while interacting with their dynamic three-dimensional environment. When this development fails, eye misalignment and double vision may result. We compared the range of image disparities over which young children display reflex motor realignment of their eyes with the range over which they report a single versus double percept. In response to step changes in the disparity of a 2.2° wide stimulus, 5-year-olds generated an adult-like reflex vergence velocity tuning

Faces emotional expressions: from perceptive to motor areas in aged and young subjects.

The role of age in perception and production of facial expressions is still unclear. Therefore, this work compared, in aged and young subjects, the effects of passive viewing of faces expressing different emotions on perceptive brain regions, such as occipital and temporal cortical areas and on the primary motor cortex (M1) innervating lower face muscles. Seventeen young (24.41 ± 0.71 yr) and seventeen aged (63.82 ± 0.99 yr) subjects underwent recording of event-related potentials (ERP), of motor potentials evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation of face M1 in the depressor anguli oris mus…

Owner Perceptions of Long-Term Systemic Use of Subcutaneous Administration of Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan.

Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) is a slow-acting disease-modifying agent used to treat degenerative joint disease. Although labeled for intramuscular use, it is commonly given by owners via a subcutaneous (SC) route. There is little information on adverse events related to SC administration or what other therapies are used concurrently with PSGAG. We hypothesized that SC PSGAG is perceived by owners as having minimal adverse events and that it would most often be given with other therapies. Owners (n = 378) were surveyed about their perceptions regarding SC PSGAG prescribed to dogs at o…
