BACKGROUND: Microbial keratitis occurs infrequently in childhood. The leading ocular predisposing factors are trauma and preexisting corneal disease. Many of the age-related risk factors in adults play a minor role in children.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively studied 51 eyes with ulcerative keratitis in 50 children younger than 16 years of age. This includes all patients treated at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute during an 11 1/2-year period from January 1, 1980, to June 30, 1991. The criterion for inclusion in the study was a discharge diagnosis of microbial (nonviral) keratitis.

Self-inflicted acute drug overdose in suicidal elderly patients appears to be a growing challenge to public health. To the best of our knowledge, little has been published on this topic. Thus we undertook a retrospective study, from January 1969 to October 1989, in a medical ICU. Ninety-two suicidal, elderly patients (54 women, 38 men) with a mean age of 77 years were included. Recently the treatment of psoriasis with vitamin D3, its metabolites or analogues, has been reported to be clinically effective and free from side effects. We have quantified the changes in the levels of epidermal lesional keratins in 15 psoriatic patients receiving oral 1 alpha(OH)D3 treatment. To elucidate the importance of hand eczema in the population of Gothenburg, a questionnaire was sent to 20,000 individuals aged 20-65 years, randomly selected from the population register of the city. After two reminders, a response rate of 83% was obtained.
