OBJECTIVES: To report infections caused by Brevundimonas vesicularis and the treatment regimens administered based on antibiotic studies of this Gram-negative bacterium in the neonatal period.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight hospitalized neonates with positive blood cultures for Brevundimonas spp. were studied. Demographic data, clinical and laboratory findings, nutritional regimens, presence of primary disease, and the antibiotic regimens administered during the treatment of these neonates were noted. We observed, during a 25-year period, 15 patients from 6 families with autoimmune myasthenia gravis (all Chinese Han from Guangdong Province) referred to our department. Their mean onset age was 13.4 years (range 2-25 years) with 10 patients with juvenile onset. The female:male ratio was 3:2. OBJECTIVE: To determine thyrotropin (TSH) and thyroid hormones reference ranges in healthy term newborns during the neonatal period and to assess the ranges of thyroid volume in newborns using ultrasound scanning.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 296 healthy newborns at birth (cord; n: 47) and before feeding on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 14th, and 28th days of life. The levels of TSH and thyroid hormones of the newborns were then compared with results from 50 healthy adults. Thyroid ultrasonography (USG) was performed by the same radiologist on 38 newborns aged 10 days.

We compared periodic and non-periodic leg movements during sleep and polysomnography in patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) with or without restless legs syndrome (RLS) with matched idiopathic RLS (iRLS) and control subjects. We enrolled 100 patients with NC: 17 having RLS were compared with 34 sex- and age-matched patients without RLS and with 17 normal controls and 17 iRLS subjects. Proximal renal tubular acidosis (pRTA) is a rare disorder. Hypokalemia may be associated with it; occasionally leading to features like hypokalemic periodic paralysis. Though pRTA is a tubulointerstitial kidney disease, glomerulonephritis may occasionally lead to pRTA by tubular damage through leaking proteins, cytokines or by inflammatory infiltrates. In order to evaluate the potential impact of the atmospheric pollution in Beijing by those cities which located southwest of it, the observations of PM10, NO(x) and O3 were conducted during the period of summer-autumn (Jul. 16-Oct. 15, 2009) in Beijing, Zhuozhou, Baoding and Shijiazhuang online, with the automated instruments which conform to international standards. This analysis was undertaken to compare the clinicopathological features of infants with choledochal cysts to those of older children with these entities and to evaluate the surgical outcomes for both subject groups. The medical records of all children admitted to the Cathay General Hospital with choledochal cysts over a 20-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-five subjects were included and divided into the infant (<1 year at presentation; 8 subjects) and classical pediatric (1-18 years at presentation; 17 subjects) groups.
