Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a common hemolytic anemia of variable clinical expression. Pathogenesis of HS has been associated with defects of several red cell membrane proteins including erythroid band 3. We have studied erythrocyte membrane proteins in 166 families with autosomal dominant HS. We have detected relative deficiency of band 3 in 38 kindred (23%). Hyperlipidaemia is a feature of glycogen storage disease type I (GSD-I) (Levy et al.). High levels of LDL cholesterol (200 +/- 25 mg dl-1) and apo B (387 +/- 44 mg dl-1) were found in association with hypercholesterolaemia in GSD-I. Related causative factors might be attributed to overproduction and/or delayed removal of LDL. In this study, a possible alteration in the clearance of LDL was examined. The gastric antisecretory properties of omeprazole, a new potent substituted benzimidazole, have been evaluated in dogs and rats. Omeprazole was compared with another benzimidazole, picoprazole (H 149/94), and with the histamine H2-receptor antagonist cimetidine. A visual assay of factor VIII-related Willebrand factor (VIIIR:WF) is described which utilizes formaldehyde-fixed platelets, end points being read in microflocculation tiles. The role of Ca2+ on insulin release has been studied by the use of ionophore A23187. The ionophore complexes divalent cations and permits Ca2+ entry into cells by acting as a carrier in the plasma membranes. Cultured cells obtained by enzymatic digestion of pancreases from newborn rats were studied on the 3rd day of culture.
