Artificial Intelligence-driven and technological innovations in the diagnosis and management of substance use disorders.

Substance Use Disorders (SUD) lead to a collection of health challenges such as overdoses and clinical diseases. Populations that are vulnerable and lack straightforward treatment access are vulnerable to significant economic and social effects linked to SUD. The ongoing advances in technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), promise new ways to reduce the effects of SUD, refine treatment standards, and minimize the risk of relapse through tailored treatment plans. Recent innovations in functional neuroimaging techniques, such as fMRI, have led to the ability to detect brain patterns

Use of a digital application to enhance communication and triage between care homes and national health service community services in the United Kingdom: a qualitative evaluation.

Recent years have seen a rise in digital interventions to improve coordination between care homes and NHS services, supporting remote sharing of data on the health of care home residents. Such interventions were key components in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents findings from the qualitative component of an evaluation of an implementation of the HealthCall Digital Care Homes application, across sites in northern England. The purpose of this qualitative component was to explore issues round feasibility, appropriacy, and acceptability. The implementation commenced prior

Transitioning young adults with neurogenic bladder-Are providers asking too much?

INTRODUCTION: Significant numbers of young adults with chronic health conditions fail to transition. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate how ready transitioned urologic patients were for that process. Owing to the cognitive impairments frequently seen with spina bifida (SB), it is hypothesized that these individuals will be less prepared to transition their medical care to adult providers compared with their healthy counterparts. METHODS: Participants included consecutive patients in the transitional SB clinic at the study institution and controls (college students without obviou

The Impact of Smart Elderly Care Technology Application on Social Isolation Among Urban Elderly Living Alone: Based on a Quasi-Natural Experiment in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration From 2018 to 2023.

Amidst accelerated urbanisation and population ageing in China, urban solo-dwelling elders face escalating social isolation-manifested through diminished physical networks and profound psychological loneliness-severely compromising their well-being. To address gaps in existing studies (such as short-term evaluations and insufficient heterogeneity exploration), this research employs a quasi-natural experiment leveraging regional disparities in smart elderly care policy implementation within the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. By constructing treatment and control groups through multi-l

Telling a Complicated Grief: A Psychodynamic Study on Mental Health Nurses' Countertransference Reactions to Patients' Suicidal Behavior.

A key element of suicide education, training and clinical supervision is enhancing emotional awareness about mental health professionals' countertransference reactions, as emotional responses to patients' suicidal behavior (SB) that may be unbeneficial to care. This study aimed to explore emotional responses to patients' SB in mental health nurses (MHNs) according to a psychodynamic perspective. Twenty-eight Italian MHNs (61% females, Mage = 52 years) were interviewed to examine their deep feelings about attempted suicides or deaths by suicide of patients with mental illness. After neonatal care, what next? A qualitative study of mothers' post-discharge experiences after premature birth in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely every year worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and Asia account for more than half of the global preterm deliveries. Prominent healthcare structural and socio-economic factors in SSA, for example poverty and weak health systems, amplify vulnerabilities for mothers and premature babies; often leading to poor outcomes. Post-discharge mortality rates are high, and readmission is common. For mothers of premature babies, the transition home from hospital is marked by challenges and uncertainties. This study explored the post-discharge

Transition From Pediatric to Adult Nephrology Care: Program Report of a Single-Center Experience.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM: Adolescents and young adults with chronic disease face many personal and systemic barriers that may impede their successful transition from pediatric to adult care, putting them at risk for treatment nonadherence, loss to follow-up, and poor health outcomes. Such barriers include impaired socioemotional functioning, overreliance on adult caregivers, lack of disease-specific knowledge, and poor coordination between pediatric and adult health care services. In 2007, we established a specialized youth to adult nephrology transition clinic at a tertiary care center to address t

Idiographic Lapse Prediction With State Space Modeling: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Many mental health conditions (eg, substance use or panic disorders) involve long-term patient assessment and treatment. Growing evidence suggests that the progression and presentation of these conditions may be highly individualized. Digital sensing and predictive modeling can augment scarce clinician resources to expand and personalize patient care. We discuss techniques to process patient data into risk predictions, for instance, the lapse risk for a patient with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Of particular interest are idiographic approaches that fit personalized models to each pa

Recurrent rectal cancer within the pelvis. A multicenter analysis of 123 patients and recommendations for adjuvant radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recommendations for radiation ports in adjuvant radiation therapy for rectal cancer are mainly based on analysis of recurrence patterns. To evaluate whether changes in surgical technique have influenced this pattern of recurrence, a multicenter retrospective analysis was carried out on a patient population treated recently. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 123 patients were evaluated with the help of a CT-based self-developed 3-D data file system and an extensive questionnaire. Major inclusion criteria (one sufficient) for eligibility were: histological confirmation, clear bone d

Community- and family-level factors influence care-giver choice to screen blood lead levels of children in a mining community.

CONTEXT: Bunker Hill, in Kellogg, Idaho, formerly a lead mine (1884-1981) and smelter (1917-1981), is now a Superfund site listed on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Priorities List. Lead contamination from the site is widespread due to past smelter discharges to land, water, and air, placing children at risk for both exposure to lead and resultant health effects of lead. Since 1983, the EPA has used child blood lead levels to inform the clean-up standards for the Bunker Hill Superfund site. This study was undertaken to examine factors that have contributed to the significa

BACKGROUND: U.S. Black women with endometrial cancer (EC) have a 90% higher mortality rate than White women, driven in part by advanced stage at diagnosis. Black women have expressed reasons for care-seeking delay: misattribution of postmenopausal bleeding, symptom endurance, and community silence regarding vaginal bleeding. OBJECTIVES: In this community-based participatory research study, we adapted, implemented, and evaluated an education program addressing these factors. METHODS: We adapted an evidenced-based education curriculum-Community Empowerment Partners (CEPs©)-using Public Health
