Factors associated with health-related quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessment is important for patients with functional dyspepsia. However, no studies have assessed factors associated with HRQoL reduction in such patients in an Asian population. This study aimed to determine the contribution of clinical, psychosocial, and demographic factors to HRQoL in affected patients in Indonesia. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we recruited 124 patients in a tertiary hospital with functional dyspepsia according to Rome III criteria. HRQoL was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 (SF-36) physical

Pain dominates measurements of elbow function and health status.

BACKGROUND: Elbow function can be quantified with use of physician-based elbow-rating systems and health status questionnaires. Our hypothesis was that pain has a strong influence on these scores, which overwhelms the influence of objective factors such as motion. METHODS: One hundred and four patients were evaluated, at a minimum of six months (average, forty-six months) after the latest surgery for an intra-articular fracture of the elbow, with use of three physician-based evaluation instruments (Mayo Elbow Performance Index [MEPI], Broberg and Morrey rating system, and American Shoulder an

Assessment of multidimensional functional recovery post-stroke: a systematic review of outcome measures and their psychometric properties.

Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability worldwide and results in complex impairments affecting motor, cognitive, functional and psychosocial domains. Despite progress in acute management, inconsistent adoption of standardized approaches and incomplete psychometric evidence coverage across functional domains limit the comparability of studies and the optimization of rehabilitation outcomes. To address this issue, a systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library for studies published between January 1990 and July 20

Patient perspectives on recovery and satisfaction after hemipelvectomy for pelvic tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant pelvic tumors often require hemipelvectomy, which can cause substantial and sometimes prolonged functional impairment. Long-term patient experience remains poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the procedure's impact on physical and psychosocial function and quality of life (QoL), adequacy of preoperative counseling, and associations between caregiver support, care coordination, and long-term care burden. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing hemipelvectomy for primary bone or soft-tissue sarcoma or pelvic bone metastases at a single tertiary center from 20

Characterizing Cancer Symptom Experiences and Related Psychosocial Concerns Through Chinese Social Media Narratives: Computational Text Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer frequently experience complex and multidimensional symptom burdens. Standardized patient-reported outcome measures provide structured approaches to symptom assessment but may not capture the full range of symptom-related and psychosocial concerns expressed in patients' narratives. Patient-generated social media data offer a complementary source for examining how these concerns are expressed online. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize cancer symptom-related narratives in Chinese social media posts using a conventional symptom assessment framework and to

Emotion regulation in prolonged grief disorder in later life: Protocol and rationale for a longitudinal neuroimaging study.

Bereavement is a near-universal experience in late life, yet only some older adults develop prolonged grief disorder (PGD). While most transition from acute grief (AG) to integrated (adaptive) grief, the neurobiological substrates underlying divergent trajectories are unclear. Emotion regulation dysfunction is hypothesized to play a central role in PGD pathogenesis, but longitudinal neuroimaging data in bereaved adults are lacking. This study aims to identify functional brain circuit measures of emotional regulation that predict pathological versus adaptive grief trajectories, aligning with th

"Ask us anything": A framework for understanding bereaved children's questions about illness, dying, and grief.

Grieving children may wonder about questions of illness, dying, and death as they navigate the death of, or grief for, someone who matters to them. Parents and caregivers, as well as health and psychosocial clinicians frequently report feeling uncertain and unprepared to engage in these conversations even if they are aware of their helpfulness. Interested in examining the questions bereaved children wonder about, this study analyzed 710 anonymous questions submitted by children aged 5-17 during Ask Us Anything sessions at a bereavement camp in Ontario, Canada between 2009 and 2024. Through an

Sleep and Quality of Life Before and After Surgery in Patients With Low-Grade Lumbar Spondylolisthesis.

BACKGROUND Spondylolisthesis, characterized by anterior displacement of a vertebra, often leads to pain and impaired sleep quality, negatively affecting overall quality of life. While postoperative outcomes in degenerative spinal conditions such as disc herniation and spinal stenosis have been widely studied, evidence focusing on sleep quality in homogeneous cohorts of patients with low-grade lumbar spondylolisthesis remains scarce. This study evaluated changes in sleep quality, pain, quality of life, and functional capacity before and after surgery in this patient population. MATERIAL AND MET

Effects of Glioblastoma Resection on Cognitive Function and Affective Symptoms at Three-Month Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent primary malignant brain tumor characterized by aggressive growth and poor prognosis, frequently accompanied by cognitive and affective deficits that severely impair quality of life (QoL). However, the short-term course of these cognitive and emotional functions after surgical resection remains insufficiently understood. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate changes in cognitive performance and affective symptoms before and 3 months after GBM resection and to explore the influence of tumor characteristics such as lateralization and location.

The Impact of Psychological Distress on Cognitive Function in Postmenopausal Women.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress and cognitive difficulties are prevalent among postmenopausal women. While some studies suggest distress affects memory or executive functions, findings are inconsistent. We evaluated associations of psychological distress with multiple cognitive domains in postmenopausal women. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The Early versus Late Intervention Trial with Estradiol was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 643 healthy postmenopausal women, conducted between 2005 and 2013. A psychosocial substudy included 448 women. METHODS: In this secondary a

Patient-Reported Psychosocial Outcomes in Patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) is a congenital overgrowth disorder with variable clinical manifestations. Given the phenotypic variability of BWS, patient experiences and quality of life (QoL) can differ significantly. Here, we explore the role of patient-reported outcomes in BWS. METHODS: Patients with BWS (aged 4-18 years) were prospectively administered FACE-Q Craniofacial measures (appearance distress, psychosocial, school, and social). Surveys were converted to a Rasch transformed score (0-100, 100 being best outcome). Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and BW
