Musculoskeletal Pain in Gymnasts: A Retrospective Analysis on a Cohort of Professional Athletes.

Gymnastics athletes are exposed to a high risk of injury, but also of developing musculoskeletal pain. These data are still little investigated in the available scientific literature. An online survey was distributed to 79 professional athletes who practiced artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. The survey collected demographic and anthropometric data, information about the sport practice, the training sessions, the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain gymnastics-related, and lifestyle habits. Musculoskeletal pain had a high prevalence, involving 65 of 79 athletes (82.3%). A significant correlation

Accuracy of unguided and ultrasound guided Coracohumeral ligament infiltrations - a feasibility cadaveric case series.

BACKGROUND: Coracohumeral ligament (CHL) thickening, contracture, and fibroplasia have been identified in glenohumeral idiopathic adhesive capsulitis (GHIAC). The CHL is the main structure responsible for the range of motion limitations. Favorable outcomes have been reported with CHL surgical release. Intra-articular glenohumeral joint corticosteroid infiltrations are utilized to disrupt the inflammatory process and reduce pain in GHIAC. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the CHL could be accurately targeted with a periligamentous infiltration. METHODS: A convenience sample of 1

Sex differences in glenohumeral muscle activation and coactivation during a box lifting task.

Manual material handling is associated with shoulder musculoskeletal disorders, especially for women. Sex differences in glenohumeral muscle activity may contribute to women's higher injury risk by affecting shoulder load and stability. We assessed the effects of sex (25 women vs 26 men) and lifting load (6 kg vs 12 kg) on muscle activation during box lifting from hip to eye level. Surface and intramuscular electromyography were recorded from 10 glenohumeral muscles. Most muscles were more activated for the heavier box and for women. These effects were larger for 'prime movers' than for stabil

Arthroplasty treatment of proximal humerus fractures: 14-year trends in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Proximal humerus fractures are a common injury in the elderly population that can usually be managed non-operatively. However, arthroplasty has become increasingly utilized for complex fractures and poor bone quality. We evaluated national trends in treatment, specifically looking at the adoption of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: The incidence of proximal humerus fractures was calculated from the Nationwide Emergency Department Database (NEDD) from 2006 to 2012. The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) was used to select patients from 2000 to 2013 with proximal humerus

Effect of Arm Position on Width of the Subacromial Space of Upper String Musicians.

OBJECTIVE: Musicians often end their musical career due to musculoskeletal injury. A leading source of shoulder pain in upper string musicians is rotator cuff disease (RCD). Multiple factors contribute to its development. Compressive overload of the soft tissues of the subacromial space resulting from a decrease in the width of the subacromial space has been identified as an extrinsic factor contributing to RCD development. The purpose of this study was to characterize the width of the subacromial space by measuring acromial-humeral distance (AHD) of upper string musicians, while their arms ar

Cutaneous Functional Units Predict Shoulder Range of Motion Recovery in Children Receiving Rehabilitation.

Cutaneous functional units (CFUs) are fields of skin that functionally contribute to range of motion (ROM) at an associated joint. When replaced with scar tissue, the skin is less extensible and may result in loss of movement at the joint. Consideration of the amount of CFU affected by burn injury is increasingly being used to predict the development of burn scar contracture (BSC) in burn survivors. Previous work established that, in adults, burn rehabilitation time per CFU was the greatest predictor of preventing BSC. Our study aimed to examine the direct relationship between percent involvem

Traction injury of the brachial plexus confused with nerve injury due to interscalene brachial block: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder surgery is often performed with the patient in the so called "beach-chair position" with elevation of the upper part of the body. The anesthetic procedure can be general anesthesia and/or regional block, usually interscalenic brachial plexus block. We present a case of brachial plexus palsy with a possible mechanism of traction based on the electromyographic and clinical findings, although a possible contribution of nerve block cannot be excluded. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: We present a case of a 62 year-old female, that suffered from shoulder fracture-dislocation. Open

Effects of reinnervation of the triceps brachii on joint kinematics and electromyographic patterns of the feline forelimb during level and upslope walking.

Nerve injury in the hindlimb of the cat results in locomotor changes, yet these findings have not been explored in a more multifunctional forelimb. Kinematics and muscle activity of the shoulder and elbow during level and upslope locomotion following reinnervation of the feline long head of the triceps brachii (TLo) were evaluated (1) during paralysis [none to minimum motor activity (short-term effects)] and (2) after the motor function was recovered but the proprioceptive feedback was permanently disrupted (long-term effects). The step cycle was examined in three walking conditions: level (0%

The variant course of the suprascapular artery.

The suprascapular artery (SSA) has been identified to be of clinical relevance in surgical intervention and fracture healing of the shoulder. Despite the classic description of its course and relation to the superior transverse scapular ligament, it is subject to much variation. The aims of this study were: (i) to describe the course of the SSA in relation to the superior transverse scapular ligament, (ii) tob determine the prevalence of the course of the SSA in relation to the superior transverse scapular ligament, (iii) to determine the prevalence of the variant origin of the SSA in cases pr

30-day morbidity and mortality after elective shoulder arthroscopy: a review of 9410 cases.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have reported incidence of or risk factors for morbidity and mortality after elective shoulder arthroscopy. METHODS: We used Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) billing codes to query the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database and identified 9410 cases of elective shoulder arthroscopy. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify risk factors for complication. RESULTS: Among 9410 patients, 109 complications occurred in 93 (0.99%). Major morbidity was 0.54% (51 patients), which included 4 patients (0.04%) with a mortality, and minor morbi

Wrist fusion in posttraumatic brachial plexus palsy.

BACKGROUND: Devastating brachial plexus injury with multiple root avulsions results in wrist instability, imbalance, and inability of patients to control the placement of their hand in space. In this study, results of wrist arthrodesis were analyzed in relation to factors such as age, severity score, and additional hand reanimation procedures. Indices of patient satisfaction were also measured using the Terzis and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaires. METHODS: Between January of 1978 and January of 2006, 97 patients with posttraumatic plexopathies underwent secondary proc

Results after delayed axillary nerve reconstruction with interposition of sural nerve grafts.

HYPOTHESIS: Satisfactory results after repair of isolated axillary nerve lesions using sural nerve autografts have been reported, but a delay between injury and surgical repair exceeding 6 months was one of the most important negative predictors of functional outcome. From our experience, we hypothesize that good results can be obtained even after a delay exceeding 6 months and we opted in this study to assess the value of delayed axillary nerve reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated clinical outcome and donor-site morbidity in 12 patients (mean age, 37; range, 19-66 years) who u

The Lesser Tuberosity Osteotomy Exposure for Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The lesser tuberosity osteotomy (LTO) is a commonly employed technique for mobilizing the subscapularis tendon during anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty that is performed through a deltopectoral approach. During this procedure, the lesser tuberosity is osteotomized from the proximal aspect of the humerus while maintaining the strong tendon-to-bone attachment of the subscapularis tendon insertion. After the shoulder arthroplasty is performed, the lesser tuberosity osseous fragment is then resecured to the proximal aspect of the humerus with heavy nonabsorbable suture, which allows
