Dream-enacting behaviour is associated with impaired sleep and severe headache-related disability in migraine patients.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders, nightmares and visual hallucinations have been reported in migraine patients, which may suggest the involvement of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep regulation in migraine. However, the relationship between migraine and REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) remains unclear. METHODS: To investigate the clinical correlates of dream-enacting behaviours (DEB) in migraine patients, we assessed episodic migraine patients ( N  = 161, mean age 33.1 years) and headache-free control subjects ( N  = 140, mean age 33.1 years) under 50 years of age in a cross-sectional, case-control

Sleeping position and reported quality of sleep. A comparison between subjects demanding treatment for temporomandibular disorders and controls.

The aims of the present study were to investigate if there are differences concerning preferred body posture during sleep between 100 patients, 66 women and 34 men, mean age: 49 years (range: 20-85 years) referred to a specialist clinic because of TMD and 100 matched controls from a public dental clinic. The participants were asked to answer a questionnaire with questions about TMD symptoms and neck or shoulder pain. They were also asked about preferred sleeping position as well as about perceived sleep quality. No differences could be found between the two groups in respect of sleeping positi

Sleep and rheumatologic disorders.

Arthritis is the leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. Seventy-two percent of the adults aged 55 years and older with arthritis report sleep difficulties. This review discusses sleep disorders associated with rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, Behcet's disease, seronegative spondyloarthropathies, osteoarthritis, sarcoidosis, and fibromyalgia. We describe the inter-relationship between sleep complaints, disease activity, depression, sleep deprivation, and cytokines. An algorithm for evaluation and

Insomnia in an 80-year-old population: relationship to medical, psychological and social factors.

In this study, insomnia in 80-year-olds was related to medical, psychological and social factors. The data were based on examinations every year in people aged between 80 and 89 years. Of 333 people living in the city of Lund and born in 1908, 67% participated. Increased severity of insomnia was significantly associated with use of diuretics, other cardiovascular drugs, hypnotics and laxatives, and with nervousness, difficulty relaxing, anorexia, nausea, constipation, backache, feeling cold, sweating, loss of weight, dizziness, depression, general fatigue, exhaustion, angina pectoris, cardiac

Do motor coordination and sleep difficulties predict peer functioning in children and adolescents with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder after accounting for existing ADHD symptomology?

Children with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to experience peer problems compared to their non-ADHD peers, though ADHD-specific symptoms only partially explain this association. This study examined whether sleep difficulties and motor coordination problems are additional predictors of peer problems in an ADHD population. An ADHD sample of 72 participants aged 6-14 years (M = 9.86 years, SD = 1.79 years) was evaluated for an association of peer problems with measures of motor coordination, sleep difficulties as well as ADHD and comorbidity symptoms. Hierarch

Clinical Manifestations of Hepatic Encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) occurs in patients with acute-on-chronic liver disease. It has a wide progression of symptoms, with its initial presentation being subtle. The symptoms of HE mainly affect mental status, the musculoskeletal system, and mood/behavior. Its severity ranges from minor disturbances in sleep-wake cycle to the patient being comatose. HE is categorized based on 4 main features: the underlying disease, the severity of manifestations, the time course, and whether precipitating factors are present. The severity of the manifestations is classically identified using the West Hav

Sleepiness in children and adolescents: clinical implications.

Over the past decade, excessive sleepiness among children and adolescents has been identified as a major societal concern. Professionals working with pediatric groups must increasingly factor sleepiness into assessments of waking function. We define and discuss excessive sleepiness in children and adolescents and review available evidence regarding effects on behavior, mood, and performance. Findings for daytime sleepiness and subsequent impairment in these domains are classified as robust to unknown. Empirical evidence clearly indicates that children and adolescents experience significant day

The effect of sleep status on all-cause mortality and premature death among middle-aged and older adults: A national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Aging in middle-aged and older adults is often accompanied by marked alterations in sleep quality and structure, characterized by increased prevalence of poor sleep quality and reduced sleep duration. Accumulating evidence suggests that the alterations in sleep status may be associated with elevated risks of mortality. However, the optimal sleep structure that confers the greatest protective effect against mortality remains unclear. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation into the relationship between sleep status and all-cause mortality as well as premature death among middle-age

Sleep apnea syndrome.

Sleep apnea syndrome is estimated to affect as many as 2 to 3 percent of the adult male population. Excessive snoring and daytime sleepiness are but a few of the many clues to diagnosis. The hypoxemia occurring as a result of apnea may lead to pulmonary hypertension. Depressed respiratory center neural output or upper airway occlusion during sleep may cause the apnea. There are a number of treatment options available.

The claustrum as a central hub for reward and threat processing.

The claustrum (CLA) complex is composed of the CLA and the dorsal endopiriform nucleus. The CLA is a small, evolutionarily conserved brain structure situated between the striatum and insular cortex. Although the CLA is present in nearly all mammals, its precise anatomical delineation, particularly in rodents, remains poorly defined due to unclear boundaries with adjacent cortical regions. Interest in the CLA has augmented following the influential hypothesis proposed by Crick and Koch regarding its potential involvement in consciousness. Over the past two decades, accumulating evidence has imp

[Circadian clock gene-mediated regulation of chronic pain pathophysiology].

Many physiological functions in humans and other mammals exhibit circadian rhythms with an approximate 24-hour period, enabling efficient adaptation to periodic environmental changes driven by the Earth's rotation. Clock genes generate circadian rhythms at the cellular level through transcription-translation feedback loops and contribute to the maintenance of physiological homeostasis. Accordingly, dysfunction of clock genes or chronic disruption of circadian rhythms has been implicated in increased disease risk and exacerbation of pathological conditions, and accumulating evidence indicates t

Advanced biomaterials and digital twins for precision psychiatry: neuroimmune modulation and AI-guided therapeutics.

Precision psychiatry should be reframed as an integrated bioengineering problem-not simply as a computational challenge of improving diagnostic classification or treatment prediction. In this Perspective, we argue that the next stage of precision psychiatry must move beyond symptom-based stratification and algorithmic prediction toward biologically informed therapeutic engineering. We propose that advanced biomaterials should be viewed not merely as drug carriers or device components, but as programmable therapeutic interfaces capable of modulating neuroimmune and neurochemical microenvironmen

Temperament, parenting, mental disorders, life stressors and help-seeking behavior of Asian adolescent suicide attempters: A case control study.

PURPOSE: The need to elucidate risk factors for adolescent suicide is urgent, as suicide consistently ranks among the top causes of death globally. Understanding suicide risk factors could inform more effective interventions. Previous studies have identified certain risk factors associated with suicide, but there is a paucity of research among adolescent and multi-ethnic Asian populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study sampled 13-to-19-year-old Asian adolescents who had attempted suicide (N = 60) and controls (N = 58) matched by age, ethnicity and gender at group-level (73.7%

Sleep disorders in kidney disease.

Sleep disorders are common in patients with end stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. However also a well functioning renal graft does not cure the poor sleep pattern which now emerges as a problem even in early chronic kidney disease (CKD). When patients are made aware for the first time of a disease such as CKD, which may brink to dialysis or at the best to a renal transplant patients begin to experience a disordered sleep. Sleeping disorders include insomnia (I), sleep apnoea (SAS), restless legs syndrome (RLS), periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), excessive
