Agent-based models in dietary behaviour: a scoping review.

Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) simulates complex systems characterised by individual interactions and decision-making, making it valuable for studying dietary behaviour. This scoping review evaluated dietary-based ABM studies. Diet-related ABM studies published in peer-reviewed journals were eligible. Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched in May 2024 (PROSPERO: CRD42023457091). A narrative synthesis of the included studies was then conducted. Risk of bias was assessed using bespoke ABM quality criteria. Across 30 eligible studies, 15 tested interventions, some testing multip

Coming of Age With Generative Artificial Intelligence: The High Stakes of Automating Adolescent Development.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming the context in which adolescents develop, presenting both opportunities a … que impacts during this life stage. Although GenAI may provide low-stakes opportunities to simulate social interactions, scaffold emotional regulation, and support identity exploration in some contexts, it also threatens to displace or thwart essential developmental experiences. Risks include increasing social isolation, undermining distress tolerance, distorting ex …

Beyond the Injury - Exploring the Foundations of Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults and Their Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Older adults (aged ≥65 years) represent 21% of the trauma admissions in the United States, yet little is known about their health-related quality of life at baseline prior to injury. This study aimed to describe the pre-injury daily activities and social engagement of older adult trauma patients and their caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal mixed-methods study including critically injured older adult trauma patients (aged ≥60) and their self-identified caregivers (aged ≥55). This manuscript reports qualitative findings from baseline semi-structured inter

Minocycline ameliorates persistent social deficits and hippocampal microglial dysfunction in mice following tumor resection.

Cancer patients often experience psychiatric dysfunctions, such as depressive symptoms, which have been shown to persist long after treatment. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In the present study, we evaluated tumor bearing-associated biological effects on behavior and brain function after cancer remission, using mice that underwent surgical resection of tumors formed following inoculation with colon 26, a murine colorectal cancer cell line. In tumor-resected mice, hippocampal Iba1-positive cells exhibited shortened process length until 14 days post-resection, consistent wit

Parental racial-ethnic socialization as a moderator of Latinx youth's cultural orientation and family dynamics.

As ethnoracial diversity continues to reshape the sociocultural landscape of the United States, adolescents from immigrant-origin families increasingly navigate multiple cultural reference points-often extending beyond the traditional heritage-host (i.e., heritage culture and White host culture) cultural paradigm. Most research on cultural orientations remains grounded in this binary framework, overlooking youth's potential engagement with other minoritized cultural streams, such as Black American culture. At the same time, less is known about how youth's multidimensional cultural orientations

Exploring the process of social support among parents of children with cancer in the sociocultural context of Iran: a grounded theory study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cancer is increasing across all age groups including children. This disease and its costly treatment affect not only the patient but their entire family-especially parents as primary caregivers-leading to psychological distress, physical exhaustion and financial strain. Social support serves as a vital protective factor for parents facing their child's cancer diagnosis. As a complex, context-dependent phenomenon emerging from social interactions, its process requires exploration within diverse cultural settings. Thus, this study aims to explain the process of soc…

Assessing the Feasibility and Acceptability of a Novel Parent-Based Intervention for Mitigating Social Media Influence on Adolescent Alcohol Consumption.

Parent-based interventions (PBIs) are efficacious in addressing adolescent alcohol use. One major limitation of PBIs is that they do not consider the role of social media on adolescent alcohol use. The present study aimed to establish process and management feasibility and acceptability of an interactive PBI that includes the role of social media in association with adolescent alcohol use. Parent-adolescent dyads (N = 101; age 15-20) were either randomly assigned to the novel PBI or treatment as usual. All participants completed baseline, 1-month, and 6-month surveys. Process feasibility was h

Telomere-Related Gene Networks in the Ovary Shift Across Environmental Factors.

The ovary is key to linking environmental factors with the timing and quality of offspring development. Focused on free-living female tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), we measured temporal variation in ovarian expression of genes involved in the regulation of telomere length. Using qPCR, we quantified mRNA abundance of shelterin proteins (TERF1, TERF2, TERF2IP, TPP1, POT1), telomerase (TERT), antioxidants (SOD1, PRDX-1, GPX), and glucocorticoid receptors (MR, GR). We asked how they differ across breeding stages and social environments, and then we assessed effects on gene co-expression, whi

Cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms in the aging population: The buffering role of marital status.

This study examines the moderating role of marital status in the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning in older adults from 12 European countries. Using longitudinal panel data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we hypothesize that marriage buffers the negative effects of depression on cognitive abilities, focusing on immediate and delayed memory and verbal fluency. Building on the Social Ambivalence and Disease (SAD) model, we argue that not only the presence of a marital relationship, but also its quality, plays a crucial role in

Downregulation of Hmox1 and Rpgrip1l Expression Linked to Risk-Taking Behavior, Reduced Depressive Symptoms, and Diminished Novelty Socialization in SUMO1 Knockout Mice.

SUMO1 is involved in the normal physiological functions of the nervous system and is also associated with the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Whereas, the effects and underling mechanisms of SUMO1 knockout (SUMO1- KO) on emotion- and cognition -related behaviors remain unexplored. We investigated changes in depression-like behaviors, social interaction, and cognition in SUMO1-KO mice compared to wild-type (WT) controls using the open-field test, tail suspension test, three-chamber test and novel object recognition test, respectively. To explore the underlying mechanisms of these beh…

Results of a multi-perspective examination of loneliness trajectories and its determinants in German adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most research on adults' vulnerability to loneliness during the pandemic has been of limited quality. This study aimed to overcome previous limitations by examining loneliness trajectories in German adults from a population-based cohort during the pandemic using face-to-face assessment, identifying risk factors and highlighting those particularly relevant to older adults. Analyses included two measurement points before and two during the pandemic, combining data from the population-based Gutenberg Health Study and COVID-19 Study (N = 7001; baseline: Mage = 51.72, SDage = 10.04). Growth mixture

The protective and promotive effects of parent racial-ethnic socialization on Asian American adolescents' psychosocial well-being: A daily-diary study.

Families of color often face daily racist incidents that lead to dynamic interactions and race-based messaging between parents and children; however, few studies have examined this phenomenon in Asian American families. Using 60 days of daily-diary data from a national sample of 108 adolescents (53.7% girls; range = 11-18-year-old; Mage = 14.8 years, SDage = 1.7, 29.6% low-income), this study examined (a) how different forms of parental racial-ethnic socialization (PRES) moderated associations between racial-ethnic discrimination (RED) and Asian American adolescents' psychosocial well-being an

Genotype- and Age-Dependent Differences in Ultrasound Vocalizations of SPRED2 Mutant Mice Revealed by Machine Deep Learning.

Vocalization is an important part of social communication, not only for humans but also for mice. Here, we show in a mouse model that functional deficiency of Sprouty-related EVH1 domain-containing 2 (SPRED2), a protein ubiquitously expressed in the brain, causes differences in social ultrasound vocalizations (USVs), using an uncomplicated and reliable experimental setting of a short meeting of two individuals. SPRED2 mutant mice show an OCD-like behaviour, accompanied by an increased release of stress hormones from the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, both factors probably influencing USV
