Validation of a Parent Proxy Quality-of-Life Measure for Young Children With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: No hearing-related quality of life (QL) questionnaire currently exists for children < 7 years. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the construct validity and reliability of a new parent-proxy Preschool Hearing Environments and Reflection on Quality of Life (HEAR-QL) questionnaire. METHODS: Parents of children 2 to 6 years old with any hearing loss (HL) were recruited from multiple sites. To evaluate the new measure's construct validity, participants completed a 70-item preschool HEAR-QL and validated questionnaires measuring hearing and communication functioning (Parents' Eva

Barriers to Dietary Salt Reduction among Hypertensive Patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite knowing the ill consequences of high salt intake, many hypertensive patients in Nepal continue to consume high levels of salt in their diet. Hence, this study aims to reveal the barriers to dietary salt reduction among hypertensive patients in Nepal. METHODS: A barrier analysis was conducted in the outpatient department of Sahid Gangalal National Heart Center, Nepal among 180 hypertensive patients under physician advice to reduce salt in their diet. A logistic regression modeling was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for the barriers. RESULTS: Low self-efficacy (OR=0.04

[Bulimia Nervosa].

In our society a huge tension is caused by three types of contradictory messages in relation to our body structure: medical message, aesthetic message and gastronomic message. The abundance of food, some very attractive, together with the social "order" of having to be slim to be accepted, originates very complicated internal situations that lead predisposed people to develop an eating disorder. In concrete, bulimia nervosa is a disorder nobody spoke about three decades ago, and there are only some detailed references about it in the last 80 years. In 1979, Rusell coined the name of bulimia ne

Resting-state alpha in autism spectrum disorder and alpha associations with thalamic volume.

Alpha circuits (8-12 Hz), necessary for basic and complex brain processes, are abnormal in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The present study obtained estimates of resting-state (RS) alpha activity in children with ASD and examined associations between alpha activity, age, and clinical symptoms. Given that the thalamus modulates cortical RS alpha rhythms, associations between thalamic structure and alpha activity were examined. RS magnetoencephalography was obtained from 47 typically-developing children (TDC) and 41 children with ASD. RS alpha activity was measured using distributed source loca

Subregional differences in intrinsic amygdala hyperconnectivity and hypoconnectivity in autism spectrum disorder.

The amygdala is a complex structure with distinct subregions and dissociable functional networks. The laterobasal subregion of the amygdala is hypothesized to mediate the presentation and severity of autism symptoms, although very little data are available regarding amygdala dysfunction at the subregional level. In this study, we investigated the relationship between abnormal amygdalar intrinsic connectivity, autism symptom severity, and anxiety and depressive symptoms. We collected resting state fMRI data on 31 high functioning adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder and 38 typic

Lack of parvalbumin in mice leads to behavioral deficits relevant to all human autism core symptoms and related neural morphofunctional abnormalities.

Gene mutations and gene copy number variants are associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Affected gene products are often part of signaling networks implicated in synapse formation and/or function leading to alterations in the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance. Although the network of parvalbumin (PV)-expressing interneurons has gained particular attention in ASD, little is known on PV's putative role with respect to ASD. Genetic mouse models represent powerful translational tools for studying the role of genetic and neurobiological factors underlying ASD. Here, we report that PV k

A preliminary quality of life questionnaire-bronchiectasis: a patient-reported outcome measure for bronchiectasis.

BACKGROUND: The Quality of Life Questionnaire-Bronchiectasis (QOL-B) is the first disease-specific, patient-reported outcome measure for patients with bronchiectasis. Content validity, cognitive testing, responsivity to open-label treatment, and psychometric analyses are presented. METHODS: Reviews of literature, existing measures, and physician input were used to generate the initial QOL-B. Modifications following preliminary cognitive testing (N = 35 patients with bronchiectasis) generated version (V) 1.0. An open-ended patient interview study (N = 28) provided additional information and wa

[Housing and work as criteria of the "Social Integration" of the mentally ill - development in Germany between 1900 and 2000].

AIM: This paper analyses, in what way psychiatrists considered housing and work as criteria of social integration of mentally ill people and what models of care were suggested in Germany throughout the 20th century. METHOD: Publications in 29 German professional and scientific psychiatric journals through the complete period from 1900 to 2000 and monographs were searched for papers on the above issues. RESULTS: Until the second half of the century, integrative initiatives related to housing and work generated in asylums without the aim of a full social integration of the patients. In the act

BACKGROUND: Every subsequent pregnancy after the loss of a child due to Sudden Infant Death (SID) causes highly anxious parents. The aim of this investigation was to point out which feelings and experiences have to be considered as influencing factors for a following pregnancy--besides being afraid of a repeated loss. The overlapping fixing of our aim was to develop some proposals and recommendations for a capable accompanying during a subsequent pregnancy. MATERIALS: The base of the evaluation were 789 consultations during long-term cares of 115 families affected by Sudden Infant Death (SID)

Interdisciplinary approaches in epidemic studies--II: Four geographic models of the flow of contagious disease.

Straightforward adaptation of geographical and regional-science models to conceptual modeling of the epidemic spread of a contagious disease is achieved by: using analogies and isomorphisms, and using as a real example the observations made during a well studied epidemic of variola minor (the mild form of smallpox), a typical contagious disease. The adaptation of the Wilson model of planning for urban development includes a static view (network) of the structure and activities of the population and of organizations (diffusion agencies such as day schools), and the dynamic view (mechanism of ep

The Enduring Logics of Settler Colonialism in Family Therapy: A Case Analysis of Sociocultural Attunement.

Drawing on insights from critical Indigenous studies, settler colonial studies, and critical whiteness studies, the authors examine how settler colonial and white supremacist ideologies may continue to structure their own family therapy theorizing and practice, with particular attention to the concept and practice of sociocultural attunement (SCA) as applied to Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT). SCA was developed within settler colonial structures and is increasingly promoted as a decolonial, anti-oppressive practice in family therapy. An anticolonial lens, paradoxically, makes visib

Bridging the heart-mind divide: Psychiatric implementation of the 2025 ESC mental-CVD consensus.

The 2025 ESC (European Society of Cardiology) Clinical Consensus Statement on mental health and cardiovascular disease is a milestone for psychiatry as much as for cardiology. It recognizes mental disorders as major determinants of cardiovascular (CV) risk and explicitly calls for collaboration with the European Psychiatric Association (EPA). In parallel, the EPA Presidential Action Plan and its "Whole Person Health" task force promote lifestyle‑based, multimorbidity-focused care. From a psychiatric perspective, the challenge is now to translate these frameworks into everyday practice. In this

Invisible battles: the disability paradox and workplace experiences of individuals with lupus.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), experience complex interplay between fatigue, mental health challenges, and workplace inclusion. SLE-related fatigue extends beyond physical exhaustion, encompassing cognitive and emotional depletion, while anxiety and depression further compound its effects. By integrating Paradox Theory and the Social Model of Disability, this research conceptualizes how competing workplace demands and structural barriers contribute to employment instability and reinforce exclusion. METHODS: A qualitative research design is employed, dr

Imported female genital schistosomiasis: a neglected health issue across borders.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is one of the most neglected tropical diseases in the world, affecting over 56 million women and girls in Africa alone. It is a sequala of Schistosoma haematobium infection and is characterised by lesions on the cervix and other reproductive structures. Schistosomiasis and FGS are prevalent in women living in, migrating from, or traveling to Schistosoma haematobium-endemic countries. FGS is associated with significant morbidity, including adverse pregnancy outcomes. Unfortunately, imported schistosomiasis and FGS often remain undiagnosed or are diagnosed on

Prevention of Early Childhood Caries from the First Level of Care: An Interdisciplinary Approach and Motivational Communication.

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is considered one of the most prevalent chronic diseases globally, particularly affecting children in socially vulnerable situations. Its significance goes beyond oral health, undermining overall development and quality of life and placing a considerable economic burden on health systems. Given the inadequacy of conventional curative approaches, this manuscript proposes a preventive model based on primary care, structured around an interdisciplinary approach and family-based communication strategies. It analyzes, based on scientific evidence, the fundamental pillar
