PURPOSE: Thalidomide is an effective treatment for recurrent aphthosis but its effectiveness at low dose has been rarely assessed.
METHODS: Single-centre non-randomized retrospective open study.
RESULTS: Forty-seven patients were treated with thalidomide for recurrent aphthosis (41 patients) or Behçet disease (six patients). Remission was obtained with a dose of 25 mg daily. Discontinuation of treatment for side effects was not observed in this case series.
CONCLUSION: Low dose thalidomide below 50 mg daily is an effective and well tolerated treatment of aphthosis.

Broad access to better HIV treatment has resulted in a significant reduction in the prevalence of HIV-associated oral lesions in western industrialized countries. However, a possible increased prevalence of oral warts and a potential dissociation between CD4+ T-cell counts and oral manifestations of HIV require continued vigilance by oral health care providers. Head and neck and oral examination coupled with a careful consideration of the complications associated with hyposalivation remain essential components of a comprehensive oral health care program.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral lesions in 13- to 16-year-old students.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on students in Duzce, a province in the western Black Sea region of Turkey. Biological response modifiers have been studied in animal models of oral mucositis. We assessed the presence of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in patients during radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. The findings of this preliminary study showed that it is possible to measure the presence of EGF in oral secretions during radiation therapy. EGF was shown to decrease during the course of radiation therapy, and a trend was seen with decreasing EGF and increasing oral ulceration (P = 0.10) and increasing total mucositis score (P = 0.09).
