Bringing Light into the Dark: Moral Injury and Exploring the Impact of Eliciting Moral Elevation on the Daily Experiences of U.S. Veterans.

Moral elevation is described as feeling inspired after witnessing someone engage in virtuous behavior, whereas moral injury is the result of internal conflict that stems from exposure to morally injurious experiences. Building on previous work that used moral elevation to benefit veterans, this study explored the relationship between eliciting elevation, daily motives, and affective experiences for veterans with moral injury-related distress. Using an ABA experimental design, veterans (final n = 22) first completed 4 daily surveys that only included brief daily measures (A), followed by 4 days

Trauma Type and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in Youth: The Mediating Role of Intolerance of Uncertainty.

OBJECTIVE: Early-life trauma is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in young adulthood; although factors that contribute to PTSS are unclear, one factor may be Intolerance of uncertainty. In adults, trauma exposure may enhance IU and in turn, contribute to PTSS. Few studies have explored these associations in youth or considered the role of trauma type. This study examined these associations in a cohort of youth (ages 18-19) with varying trauma histories. METHODS: Participants (N = 129) completed validated measures of lifetime trauma exposure, IU, and PTSS. The unique effects

Childhood trauma and subclinical PTSD symptoms predict adverse effects and worse outcomes across two mindfulness-based programs for active depression.

Within mindfulness-based programs (MBPs), mixed results have been found for the role of childhood trauma as a moderator of depression outcomes. Furthermore, childhood trauma and PTSD symptoms have been identified as possible risk factors for the occurrence of meditation-related adverse effects (MRAE). The present research examined multiple forms of childhood trauma and PTSD symptoms as predictors of depression treatment outcomes and MRAEs. Various forms of childhood trauma (e.g., abuse and neglect) were examined as predictors of depression treatment outcomes and participant attrition using sec

Age differences in acute stress and PTSD symptoms during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war: Preliminary findings.

Traumatic exposure can result in acute stress symptoms in the immediate aftermath and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms that persist beyond the initial weeks. Both short-term and long-term reactions require research and clinical attention. There is considerable evidence for age differences in PTSD, and older adults frequently present lower rates of PTSD compared to young adults. Much less is known concerning age differences in acute reaction or the extent to which age differences in PTSD are affected by age differences in acute stress. The current study examined acute stress and P

Posttraumatic stress disorder in people with dementia: study protocol.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is considered an independent risk factor for dementia. Despite the (clinical) evidence that PTSD is associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia, studies on its prevalence and clinical manifestation are limited, and their quality is affected by the lack of a structured method to diagnose PTSD in this population. The primary aim of the current study is to validate the 'TRAuma and DEmentia' interview as a diagnostic tool for PTSD in people with dementia and to test feasibility of EMDR treatment for people with PTSD and dementi

Editorial: The Risks of Suicidality and Self-Harm in Adolescents During War: A Global Research Priority.

Globally, suicide and suicidal behaviors among adolescents and other youth continue to be a serious public health concern.1-3 The influence of war events such as displacement, injuries, continuous bombardments, witnessing atrocities and deaths, the relentless exposure to violent images and messages in the media is associated with acute stress, increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and functional impairments.4 Similarly, lack of schooling and support systems in war settings and the associated risk of psychopathology put war-affected populations, especially adolescents and young adult

Effectiveness of interventions for psychological distress following traumatic injury: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury poses significant physical and psychological challenges, often resulting in psychological distress, encompassing symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. Despite the recognised need for psychological care in trauma rehabilitation, there is limited empirical evidence of effective interventions tailored specifically for individuals with traumatic injuries, leading to a practice-evidence gap. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological and behavioural interventions for reducing psychological distress in adults follow

Disentangling the effects of PTSD from Gulf War Illness in male veterans via a systems-wide analysis of immune cell, cytokine, and symptom measures.

BACKGROUND: One-third of veterans returning from the 1990-1991 Gulf War reported a myriad of symptoms including cognitive dysfunction, skin rashes, musculoskeletal discomfort, and fatigue. This symptom cluster is now referred to as Gulf War Illness (GWI). As the underlying mechanisms of GWI have yet to be fully elucidated, diagnosis and treatment are based on symptomatic presentation. One confounding factor tied to the illness is the high presence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research efforts have demonstrated that both GWI and PTSD are associated with immunological dysfu

Screening for symptoms of childhood traumatic stress in the primary care pediatric clinic.

BACKGROUND: Childhood traumatic experiences may result in post-traumatic stress disorder. Although pediatricians are encouraged to address these traumas in clinical encounters, measures of childhood traumatic stress have not been adopted by primary care clinicians. In this study, we describe the feasibility and potential utility of the UCLA Brief Screen, a validated screener for childhood traumatic stress symptoms, in pediatric primary care clinics. METHODS: Children 6-17 years of age presenting for routine well-child care in community-based pediatric clinics were eligible for traumatic stres

The Role of Functional Health Literacy in Terms of Hazardous Alcohol Use in Adults with Probable Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder.

Objective: Co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a prevalent and problematic comorbidity. Functional health literacy (FHL) may play a role in this comorbidity based on its previously documented role in hazardous drinking. The current study examined functional health literacy (FHL) regarding hazardous drinking among a sample with probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Methods: The current study is a secondary analysis of data from a project studying the transdiagnostic risk and maintenance factors of PT

Mediators of Outcome in Trauma-Focused Psychotherapy with Youth: A Systematic Review.

This article aimed to provide a systematic narrative synthesis of existing studies on the mediators of change in psychotherapy with adolescents (10-19 years) and transition age youth (TAY) (20-29 years) who have experienced trauma-related symptoms or posttraumatic disorder. Additionally, we were interested in identifying psychotherapy-, trauma type-, and clients' age- and gender-specific mediators of treatment outcome. Following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses, a total of 3,723 studies published in PubMed and PsycINFO databases were screened against inclu

The role of environmental sensitivity in post-traumatic stress symptoms in Lebanese children and adolescents.

Children differ substantially in their sensitivity to the quality of their environment. Some are more sensitive and more likely to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in response to Childhood Adversities (CAs), but might also benefit more from Positive Home Experiences (PHE). The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Environmental Sensitivity (ES), CAs and PHEs in PTSD development in children and adolescents. Data was collected from N = 2,569 children/adolescents. PTSD symptoms, CAs, PHEs and ES were assessed with self-report measures. We found that higher ES and CAs emerge

Protective and vulnerability personality traits associated with PTSD diagnosis after preterm delivery.

Giving birth prematurely is a traumatic event that has many consequences for the mother but also for her baby and their family. Studies have shown that about a quarter of these mothers will suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result. This study aims to identify internal personality factors associated with the development of PTSD in mothers who gave birth before 33 weeks. The results revealed significant correlations between two personality dimensions (neuroticism and extraversion) and the likeliness of developing PTSD in mothers who gave birth prematurely. Neuroticism is pos

Aerobic exercise in the treatment of PTSD: An examination of preclinical and clinical laboratory findings, potential mechanisms, clinical implications, and future directions.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with heightened emotional responding, avoidance of trauma related stimuli, and physical health concerns (e.g., metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease). Existing treatments such as exposure-based therapies (e.g., prolonged exposure) aim to reduce anxiety symptoms triggered by trauma reminders, and are hypothesized to work via mechanisms of extinction learning. However, these conventional gold standard psychotherapies do not address physical health concerns frequently presented in PTSD. In addition to widely documented physi

[Potential PTSD therapeutics targeting 5-HT2C receptors].

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often treated by (1) selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), (2) exposure therapy, or a combination of the two. However, while all treatments have some efficacy, they are not fully effective. It is necessary to elucidate the causes of inadequate efficacy and to direct the development of effective treatments. First, regarding (1), pharmacological studies have indicated that the 5-HT2C receptor is one of the receptor subtypes that interfere with the therapeutic effects of SSRIs. To compensate for nonselective effects in pharmacological manipulati

NR3C1 overexpression regulates the expression and alternative splicing of inflammation-associated genes involved in PTSD.

NR3C1-encoding glucocorticoid receptors have dual roles as RNA-binding protein and transcription factor. Recent studies revealed that NR3C1 might play an important role in the pathogenesis of PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). However, its molecular mechanism remained unclear. In the present study, a neuronal cell model was constructed by transfecting a NR3C1-overexpressing plasmid pIRES-hrGFP-1a-NR3C1 or empty vector into HT22 cells. The changes in global transcription levels and alternative splicing events in HT22 cells after NR3C1 overexpression were analyzed by RNA sequencing. Compared
