Autonomic activity and cardiovascular system risk assessment in pediatric patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome.

In pediatric patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), cardiac involvement and autonomic nervous system function can be evaluated by a non-invasive method called heart rate variability (HRV). This study aims to evaluate heart rate variability and electrocardiography findings in patients with HUS by comparing a healthy group. Patients who are diagnosed with HUS at a university hospital from December 2020 to June 2022 are screened by electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, and 24-h Holter ECG. A healthy control group, compatible in age and gender with the patient group, was selected fr

[Delayed medical consequences of the Chernobyl accident in Armenia. Assessment of life quality and accelerated biological aging of accident liquidators].

In this paper, some final results of 25-year investigations carried out in Scientific Centre for Radiation Medicine and Burns MH RA (SCRMB) on the Armenian cohort of the Chernobyl accident consequences liquidators are shown. These results show that health conditions of the liquidators became worse during the whole observation period. A considerable development of both pathological states atypical of radiation damages and diseases, which may be considered as radiation-induced ones, was determined. Rise of the sickness rate of almost all organism systems, first of all, nervous, cardiovascular, r

Acute effects of different resistance training loads on cardiac autonomic modulation in hypertensive postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with arterial hypertension often have an autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance with predominance of sympathetic ANS. This predominance can lead to injury of several organs affecting its functioning. There is evidence that performing high intensity resistance training (RT) with heavier loads and a lower number of repetitions results in lower cardiovascular stress when compared with lighter loads and a higher number of repetitions. However, the effects of different protocols of RT in autonomic modulation are not known. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze and

The Effects of a Single Vagus Nerve's Neurodynamics on Heart Rate Variability in Chronic Stress: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The modulation of the autonomic nervous system's activity, particularly increasing its parasympathetic tone, is of significant interest in clinical physiotherapy due to its potential benefits for stress-related conditions and recovery processes. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the addition of neurodynamics in enhancing parasympathetic activation in subjects with chronic stress. METHODS: A clinical trial randomly assigned participants to a group with neurodynamics (6 bpm breathing protocol + manual therapy + neurodynamic technique) or a group without neurodynamics (6 bpm

Peripheral and central nervous system alterations in a rat model of inflammatory arthritis.

It is consistently reported that in inflammatory arthritis (IA), pain may continue despite well-controlled inflammation, most likely due to interactions between joint pathology and pain pathway alterations. Nervous system alterations have been described, but much remains to be understood about neuronal and central non-neuronal changes in IA. Using a rat model of IA induced by intra-articular complete Freund's adjuvant injection, this study includes a thorough characterization of joint pathology and objectives to identify peripheral innervation changes and alterations in the spinal dorsal horn

A compartmental model for simulating the gut-brain axis in gastric function regulation.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric function is regulated by the gut-brain axis, which integrates vagal and enteric nervous system (ENS) pathways. The parasympathetic circuit within the vagal pathway promotes digestion by stimulating peristaltic activity and relaxing the pyloric sphincter (PS) through motor and sensory neurons. In contrast, the sympathetic pathway inhibits digestion by suppressing peristalsis and constricting the PS, highlighting the complex neural coordination involved in gastric regulation. METHODS: We introduce a novel mathematical model of the gut-brain axis using a computationally eff

Pubertal developmental, body mass index, and cardiovascular autonomic function in children and adolescents with and without autism spectrum disorder: a four-time point accelerated longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) regulates 'automatic' functions such as heart rate, and alterations may have significant impacts on health outcomes. Cardiovascular measures of autonomic function such as heart rate variability are of interest as biological markers in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The interplay between the ANS and physical health establishes a need to examine cardiovascular autonomic functioning in youth with and without ASD over development. The current study aimed to identify change in autonomic function and balance across the parasympathetic and sympathetic b

Association of Cardiovascular Autonomic Failure With Progression and Phenoconversion in Isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a prodromal state of α-synucleinopathies, presenting years before overt neurodegenerative disorders. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement, particularly cardiovascular autonomic failure, may indicate progression. However, its role as a (multidimensional) marker for disease progression and phenoconversion remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether cardiovascular autonomic failure and symptoms of autonomic dysfunction serve as multidimensional markers in patients with iRBD. METHODS: We conducted a prosp

Effects of sleep deprivation on heart rate variability: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation is prevalent in high-pressure environments and among shift workers, and may contribute to autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, contributing to cardiovascular diseases, mood disorders, and cognitive impairment. Heart rate variability (HRV), an important indicator of ANS function, reflects fluctuations in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity and is commonly used to assess the autonomic effects of sleep deprivation. However, existing studies exhibit considerable heterogeneity due to inconsistencies in HRV measurement methods, variations in deprivation du

Morphology of the human cervical vagus nerve: implications for vagus nerve stimulation treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The vagus nerve has gained a role in the treatment of certain diseases by the use of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). This study provides detailed morphological information regarding the human cervical vagus nerve at the level of electrode implant. RESULTS: Eleven pairs of cervical vagus nerves and four pairs of intracranial vagus nerves were analysed by the use of computer software. It was found that the right cervical vagus nerve has an 1.5 times larger effective surface area on average than the left nerve [1,089,492 ± 98,337 vs 753,915 ± 102,490 μm(2), respectively, (P < 0.05)] a

Dual presynaptic effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine on peripheral noradrenergic synapses.

The aim of the present experiments was to study the effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on the responses to postganglionic stimulation of two models of the peripheral sympathetic nervous system: the isolated nictitating membrane of the cat and the guinea-pig isolated atria. In the nictitating membrane of the cat, 5-HT (0.1 microM) shifted to the left the frequency-response curve to nerve stimulation. This potentiating effect was prevented by 5-HT receptor antagonists (0.1 microM methysergide, 0.1 microM pizotifen and 0.1 microM morphine) and also by the beta-adrenoreceptor blocker propranolo…

Neuro-Immuno-Endocrine Regulation of Bone Homeostasis.

Bone is an important connective tissue involved in the movement and mechanical support of the body. Its homeostasis refers to the equilibrium between bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. Hematopoietic progenitor cells are shared by bone and immune cells, and the skeletal system is extensively innervated by an extensive nerve network. The immune, endocrine and nervous systems synthesize and secrete cytokines, hormones and neurotransmitters, respectively, which regulate physiological processes involved in bone homeostasis. Hormones such as gonadotropin-releasing horm

Dysautonomia and related outcomes in Guillain-Barre syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) presents an annual incidence of 1.2-2.3 per 100,000. Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems' peripheral control of visceral organs is affected by GBS aberrant immune response. Associated cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, sudomotor, pupillary, and other systems disturbances cause significant morbidity and mortality. This study aims to evaluate the dysautonomia spectrum in GBS patients, its relationship with patient outcomes, and compare it with those without autonomic disturbances. METHODS: We performed an ambispective review study of patients…

Clinical and radiologic findings in progressive facial hemiatrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome).

We describe the clinical and radiologic changes related to progressive facial hemiatrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) occurring during a 20-month period in a child who presented with unilateral neurologic deficits and facial hemiatrophy. CT and MR findings included unilateral focal infarctions in the corpus callosum, diffuse deep and subcortical white matter signal changes, mild cortical thickening, and leptomeningeal enhancement with dense mineral deposition. Angiographic findings were normal. We hypothesize that a noninfectious, unilateral inflammatory process, possibly associated with a chroni

Depression remodels tumor microenvironment to drive tumor progression: Bio-behavioural signalling pathways and clinical interventions.

BACKGROUND: Depression, chronic stress, fear, and anxiety have been implicated as major risk factors in tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. These psychological conditions stimulate the secretion of neurotransmitters and stress hormones through prolonged activation of the fight-or-flight response. The arousal of stress-related systems, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and the sympathetic nervous system, induces physiological alterations. Consequently, stress-associated mediators suppress antitumor immune responses, enhance the release of inflammatory cytokines, and pro…

Physiological and behavioural indices of hostility: an extension of the capacity model to include exposure to affective stress and right lateralized motor stress.

Right hemisphere functional cerebral systems have reliably been associated with sympathetic nervous system arousal and the perception of negative affective events. The goal of the current research was to provide additional support for the capacity model of hostility by examining changes attributable to functional cerebral systems within the right hemisphere using a dual concurrent task paradigm. To incorporate exposure to negative affective and right-lateralized motor stress using this approach, high and low hostile individuals completed a series of grip-strength tasks before and after hearing…
