Behavioral Academic Avoidance as an Indirect Partial Mediator of the Association Between Chronic Family Stress and University Grades.

BACKGROUND: American university students who self-report higher levels of family stress have lower grade point averages and are less likely to remain enrolled through graduation. Existing research seeking to identify mechanisms that might explain this association has focused primarily on students' psychological adjustment (eg, levels of depression, anxiety, self-efficacy). In this study, we sought to explicate the family stress - academic grade association by focusing on a behavioral explanation, considering the extent to which students respond to academic difficulties by demonstrating avoidan

Integrating health promotion into the educational mission: a 25-year bottom-up institutional trajectory in a Chilean university.

Although universities worldwide are increasingly adopting health promotion strategies, there remains limited longitudinal evidence on how these initiatives are institutionally integrated and sustained over time, especially in Latin American contexts. This study explores the 24-year trajectory (1999-2023) of the first Health Promotion Policy implemented at a Chilean university, providing rare insights into a long-term bottom-up institutional process. In analytical terms, the VIVE UCN Evaluation Model was applied using the milestones (M), actors (A), processes (P), and challenges (C) (MAPC) fram…

A qualitative study exploring the pros and cons of universal pediatric palliative care referral at diagnosis for children with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Early integration of pediatric palliative care (PPC) offers significant benefits for children with cancer, yet referrals often occur late in the child's cancer trajectory. OBJECTIVES: As part of a larger project looking at barriers and facilitators to early integration of PPC, this study explored the perspectives of healthcare providers (HCPs) on the pros and cons of a universal referral system where all children with cancer are referred to PPC at diagnosis. METHODS: Using the grounded theory method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 66 oncology and PPC providers acr

Awareness, Attitudes, and Utilization of Counseling Services Among Students at the University of Sharjah, UAE: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background University students experience high levels of academic and psychological stress, yet counseling services remain underutilized, particularly in Middle Eastern settings, where stigma and limited awareness may affect help-seeking. Although studies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have examined general attitudes toward professional psychological help-seeking, institution-specific evidence on students' awareness of campus counseling services, perceived confidentiality, and actual utilization remains limited. In particular, data describing these factors among students at the University o

Harnessing large language models in virtual CBT for university students' academic anxiety: a preliminary randomized trial.

Academic anxiety is a common mental health problem among university students. It is often associated with reduced learning efficiency and an increased risk of depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is supported by an established evidence base, but its use in university settings is still limited by factors such as therapist availability, time, and physical space. To explore a new approach to digitally assisted intervention, this study integrated virtual reality (VR), large language model (LLM), and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technologies. We developed an LLM-VR-CBT system base

A universal kinetic framework for quantitative isothermal amplification governed by polymerase speed, amplicon size, and binding efficiency.

The lack of a predictive, first-principles model has confined the development of isothermal exponential amplification (IEA) to empirical optimization for decades, hindering its quantitative potential. Here, we resolve this by establishing a universal kinetic framework that defines amplification efficiency through three fundamental physical parameters: the polymerase extension rate (Se), the amplicon size (Sa), and the primer-template binding efficiency (ξ). The model reveals the apparent doubling time as $T = \frac{{{{S}_a}}}{{\xi \cdot {{S}_e}}}$, providing a unified physical explanation for

UniGraphPTMs: a contrastive learning-enhanced universal framework for PTM site prediction via GNN and multimodal fusion.

Protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) represent a core regulatory mechanism governing protein function and cellular fate. Their dynamic alterations profoundly influence critical biological processes. However, Existing research primarily focuses on single-PTM site prediction and remains confined by single-modality analysis. This study introduces UniGraphPTMs, the first universal PTM site prediction framework based on multimodal fusion and graph neural networks. UniGraphPTMs employs a master-slave architecture to break branch independence through multi-stage interactions. We pioneer th

Spoken sentence comprehension in Mandarin-English bilinguals: a case against the universal processing advantage of subject-relatives.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates sentence comprehension in Mandarin-English bilinguals, focusing on whether the widely reported, yet contested, subject-relative processing advantage extends to bilingual speakers. We evaluate which theoretical accounts, based on syntactic structure and canonicity, best explain cross-linguistic patterns of sentence processing. METHODS: Using a sentence-picture matching task, we examined the comprehension of canonical (e.g., actives) and non-canonical (e.g., passives) sentence structures in English and Mandarin for bilingual speakers of varying ages and Man

From the Male Gaze to the Female Gays: Universalizing Lesbian Experiences in Alison Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For.

This article argues that Alison Bechdel envisioned a new way of looking at lesbians in her long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For (1983-2008). Through simultaneously universalizing lesbian experiences while celebrating the ways in which her characters' sexualities rendered them different from each other and from the so-called 'universal' white male protagonists of much mainstream media, Bechdel created what I term a 'universalizing' gaze. This gaze usurped Laura Mulvey's 'male gaze' through presenting lesbian characters, not as sexual objects drawn for the reader's pleasure, but as al

Nature Counts to Three: Universal Mg-Pinch Motif Polarizes the Cleaved Bond in NTP-Processing Enzymes.

Phosphates are essential for life in all organisms, playing key roles in nucleic acids, signaling, energy transfer, and biosynthesis. We conducted a quantitative analysis of nucleoside triphosphate (NTP) processing enzymes across all enzymatic reactions, revealing their dominance in phosphate reactivity with ATP as the most prevalent substrate. Two main reaction types occur predominantly: cleavage resulting in pyrophosphate release or phosphate release/transfer. The large majority of NTP processing enzymes require divalent Mg2+ ions in a mechanistically analogous manner. However, the catalytic

An Integrated Multilevel Mental Health Support System for University Students: 4-Year Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: University students, in the life stage of emerging adulthood, struggle with a number of mental health problems around the world, mostly due to difficulties related to their studies and social relations. Though most students are aware of their problems, health-seeking behavior tends to lag behind. The COVID-19 pandemic aggravated mental health problems among students. In response, the University of Debrecen developed an integrated, multilevel model system aimed at the screening, prevention, and treatment of students' mental health problems. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the testi

Ensuring sustainable availability of frozen bone allografts: experiences and lessons from a university hospital bone bank.

University hospital bone banks are vital to tissue transplantation, providing safe bone allografts for surgical procedures. The bone bank at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) initially sourced femoral heads and knee slices from living donors, which were radiation-sterilized and frozen for internal orthopaedic surgeries. In 2015, through collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the bank obtained long bones from deceased donors. A 10-year retrospective analysis (2013-2022) evaluated the bank's nationwide distribution, which totalled 661 frozen bone allografts across 384 despatch batches.
