Encapsulated peracetic acid as a valid broad-spectrum antimicrobial alternative, leading to beneficial microbiota compositional changes and enhanced performance in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial alternatives are urgently needed, including for poultry production systems. In this study, we tested the potential broad-range antimicrobial alternative peracetic acid, delivered in feed via the hydrolysis of encapsulated precursors through a 28-day study using 375 Ross 308 broiler chickens. We tested two peracetic acid concentrations, 30 and 80 mg/kg on birds housed on re-used litter, and we evaluated the impact of both levels on gut microbial communities, bacterial concentration, antimicrobial resistance genes relative abundance and growth performance when compared

Antibiotic Susceptibility of Microorganisms Grown in Tracheal Aspirate Cultures of Pediatric Intensive Care Patients.

Background Microorganisms proliferating in the hospital setting cause infections with high morbidity and mortality rates. In intensive care units (ICUs), the rates of antibiotic resistance and microorganisms grown in cultures may vary by time period. Antibiotic sensitivity must be known for a correct empirical treatment approach. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and antibiotic resistance profiles of pathogenic microorganisms isolated from tracheal aspirate samples in the ICU. Methodology This study enrolled 100 tracheostomized patients aged one month to 18 years, regardless of

The use of antibiotic-loaded bone cement does not increase antibiotic resistance after primary total joint arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: One of the preventive strategies for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the use of antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) in primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Even though it is widely used, there are concerns about the development of antibacterial resistance. The aim of the study was to investigate whether using ALBC in primary TJA increases the antibiotic-resistant PJI. The hypothesis was that the regular use of ALBC does not increase the rate of resistant PJI. METHODS: Patients with confirmed PJI who had revision surgery from year 2010 to 2019 were included in this interna

High proportion of nontypeable Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates among sporadic, nonoutbreak cases of bacterial conjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: Outbreaks of bacterial conjunctivitis have been linked to nontypeable strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae that lack a capsule, a key virulence factor for invasive infections. In contrast, isolates from sporadic, nonoutbreak cases of conjunctivitis were thought to be similar to invasive or nasopharyngeal isolates with respect to their capsular serotype and antibiotic resistance profile. This hypothesis was tested for 302 strains isolated during three prospective, multicenter clinical studies of bacterial conjunctivitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: S. pneumoniae capsular serotypes were dete

A Case of Roseomonas gilardii Peritonitis Associated with a Flooded Peritoneal Dialysis Treatment Space.

Bacterial peritonitis is a key complication of Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and a preventable cause of withdrawal from PD treatment. Infection generally arises from contamination with skin commensals during handling of the dialysis delivery system or from translocation of gastrointestinal organisms and more rarely from an environmental organism. Herein, we report the case of a 73-year-old admitted for PD-related peritonitis due to Roseomonas gilardii with an associated environmental exposure from a domestic plumbing issue. We describe the presentation, case, and antibiotic regimen progression from

Rhodococcus equi pericarditis in a patient living with HIV/AIDS.

INTRODUCTION: Rhodococcus equi, previously called Corynebacterium equi, is known to cause pneumonia in foals and swine. Although it was known to cause infection rarely in humans, R equi infection in humans has increased with the advent of HIV and increased use of immunosuppressants. CASE: We report a case of a 48-year-old male patient with newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS presenting with recurrent R equi bacteremia, pericardial effusion, and pericardial cyst. The infection was treated with drainage of the pericardial effusion and cyst and 2 weeks of intravenous vancomycin and 6 months of oral azithro

Kytococcus schroeteri: a probably underdiagnosed pathogen involved in prosthetic valve endocarditis.

Kytoccoccus schroeteri is an emerging pathogen found mainly in association with prosthetic valve endocarditis. A striking aspect of this species is its resistance to penicillins, including isoxazolylpenicillins, making glycopeptide administration and valve replacement the treatment of choice. We present the case of a 38-year-old female diabetic patient with fever up to 39.1 degrees C for two months. Infection of her prosthetic aortic valve was suspected clinically. Repeated blood cultures revealed growth of K. schroeteri. Transesophageal echocardiography demonstrated a vegetation on the prosth

Antibiotic susceptibility of 629 bacterial blood and CSF isolates from Swedish infants and the therapeutic implications.

Blood and CSF isolates (n = 629) from Swedish infants up to one year of age were tested in vitro against 13 antimicrobial agents in order to update the guidelines for empiric therapy of septicaemia and meningitis. Ampicillin plus gentamicin provided inadequate empiric therapy for meningitis, due to the poor CSF penetration of the aminoglycoside and the frequent occurrence of bacterial resistance to ampicillin. Ceftazidime and cefuroxime were moderately active, particularly against isolates from small infants. Cefotaxime today seemed to provide the best empiric therapy of septicaemia and mening

In vivo antibacterial activity of Streptomyces tuirus against MRSA-infected model.

Antibiotic resistance poses a global health risk, prompting researchers to focus on discovering new effective therapeutics from microbial sources. Hence, this study assessed the antimicrobial activity of the ethyl acetate crude extract of Streptomyces tuirus against MRSA in mice, providing the first in vivo validation of its previously reported in vitro activity. BALB/c mice (23 ± 1.2 g) were divided into 6 groups (6 mice/group). Groups I and II served as negative controls for saline and DMSO, respectively, while Group III received only the crude extract (10 mg/kg (post safety assessment). The
