The pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as spondyloarthritis (SpA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves genetic factors and gut microbiota dysbiosis, which have been widely reported in patients and animal models. Although genetic factors are known to reshape the gut microbiota, the mechanistic role of the host gene-reshaped gut microbiota in mediating inflammatory diseases remains poorly characterized. This study focused on HLA-B27 to investigate its impact on the gut microbial composition and its association with HLA-B27 related autoimmune inflammator

As the increase in infections due to community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA), monitoring of colonization in healthy population is becoming more significant. From nasal cavity of two preclinical medical students who were originally healthy and had neither foreign travel history nor contact with animals, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains were isolated. For these MRSA, the genotypes, prevalence of virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance determinants were analyzed, along with antimicrobial susceptibility test. These strains were genotyped as (i)

Gut-brain communication via the peripheral neural network is vital for regulating local digestive function and systemic physiology. Gut microbiota, which produces a wide array of neuroactive compounds, is a critical modulator in this bidirectional dialog. Perturbations in the gut microbiota have been implicated in neurological disorders such as depression and stress. Distinct from humans and other monogastric animals, ruminants possess a unique, microbially dense gastrointestinal compartment, the rumen, that facilitates the digestion of fibrous plant materials. These ruminal microbes are likel

BACKGROUND: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is an immune-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to Aspergillus, a common environmental fungus. It is typically seen in asthmatic patients and those with cystic fibrosis. Lack of clinical suspicion and misdiagnosis often make the management of this condition difficult.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We are reporting a case of ABPA that was diagnosed and managed at Divisional Railway Hospital, Kharagpur, South Eastern Railway. The patient was a 66-year-old female who presented with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. She had been asthmatic since

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease that affects human and animal health worldwide, especially in developing countries. Although fascioliasis is considered an emerging disease in Vietnam, community-based prevalence estimates are scarce. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of fascioliasis in northern Vietnam. In 2018, a cross-sectional study was conducted involving 796 individuals from Yen Bai and Thanh Hoa provinces; stool and blood samples were collected from its members. Stool samples were analyzed for Fasciola eggs using the Kato-Katz and formalin-ether concentration t

Flow cytometry is a sensitive and practical technique that can be applied in both basic and clinical research. It allows extracting quantitative and multiparametric valuable information to assist in the study of cell immunophenotyping, morphological complexity, location and/or expression of extra and intracellular molecules involved in metabolic and proliferative pathways, inflammation, viability, and cell death, among others. The parameters are analyzed by labeling antigens of yellow fever virus and/or cells with fluorescent specific monoclonal antibodies or dyes for immunophenotyping and dat

Chlamydia psittaci, the causative agent of psittacosis, is an intracellular bacterium typically transmitted from birds to humans, leading to atypical pneumonia. We present a case of a 60-year-old man with no reported bird exposure but a history of working as a chief cook, potentially exposed to poultry. He presented with high fever, diffuse soreness, and left-sided pulmonary consolidation. Initial treatment with β-lactams was ineffective, but a multiplex PCR on bronchoalveolar lavage identified C. psittaci DNA. Therapy was switched to moxifloxacin, resulting in rapid clinical improvement. C. p

The gustatory system is responsible for detecting and evaluating the palatability of the various chemicals present in food and beverages. Taste bud cells, located primarily on the tongue, communicate with the gustatory sensory neurons by means of neurochemical signals, transmitting taste information to the brain. It has also been found that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) may modulate food intake and palatability, and that taste bud cells express cannabinoid receptors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors in the gustatory

Epinephrine autoinjectors (EAIs) are used for the treatment of severe allergic reactions in a community setting; however, their utility is limited by low prescription fulfillment rates, failure to carry, and failure to use due to fear of needles. Given that delayed administration of epinephrine is associated with increased morbidity/mortality, there has been a growing interest in developing needle-free, easy-to-use delivery devices. neffy (epinephrine nasal spray) consists of three Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved components: epinephrine, Intravail A3 (absorption enhancer), and a Un

Rarely has a chemical elicited as much controversy as dichloroacetate (DCA). DCA was initially considered a dangerous toxic industrial waste product, then a potential treatment for lactic acidosis. However, the main controversies started in 2008 when DCA was found to have anti-cancer effects on experimental animals. These publications showed contradictory results in vivo and in vitro such that a thorough consideration of this compound's in cancer is merited. Despite 50 years of experimentation, DCA's future in therapeutics is uncertain. Without adequate clinical trials and health authorities'

While model organisms have had many historians, this article places studies of humans, and particularly our development, in the politics of species choice. Human embryos, investigated directly rather than via animal surrogates, have gone through cycles of attention and neglect. In the past 60 years they moved from the sidelines to center stage. Research was resuscitated in anatomy, launched in reproductive biomedicine, molecular genetics, and stem-cell science, and made attractive in developmental biology. I explain this surge of interest in terms of rivalry with models and reliance on them. T

Microbes are powerful upgraders, able to convert simple substrates to nutritional metabolites at rates and yields surpassing those of higher organisms by a factor of 2 to 10. A summary table highlights the superior efficiencies of a whole array of microbes compared to conventionally farmed animals and insects, converting nitrogen and organics to food and feed. Aiming at the most resource-efficient class of microbial proteins, deploying the power of open microbial communities, coined here as 'symbiotic microbiomes' is promising. For instance, a production train of interest is to develop rumen-i

The city of Houston, Texas has a growing deficit of available and affordable rental units for low-income residents. Due to pet policies, the shortage of affordable housing potentially puts renters who own pets at greater risk of housing insecurity. In this qualitative study, we use a community-engaged approach to document the lived experiences of finding and maintaining affordable housing among 24 current, former, and aspiring pet owners. The majority of the participants identified as female, were aged 44-60 years, identified as Black, had a high school education, and were employed full-time o

Microbial molecules translocated from the intestinal lumen into the host's internal environment play a role in various physiological functions. Previously, we identified that butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced by intestinal bacteria, lipoteichoic acid, a cell wall component of gram-positive bacteria, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a cell wall component of gram-negative bacteria, induce sleep when their naturally occurring translocation is mimicked by direct delivery into the portal vein. Our findings suggested that these microbial molecules exert their sleep-promoting effects within th

Animals' fitness is determined in a large proportion by the balance in energetic requirements maintained during daily activities, in response to environmental factors. Predation is a major environmental factor influencing the activity patterns of prey, and the deployment of adaptive responses to predation represents a significant cost to prey populations and communities. Experimental removal of predators to study the effect on activity patterns of prey is impractical for vertebrate species. However, islands are often deprived of predators and provide an excellent arena to study prey's response

Since the development of the "cholinergic hypothesis" as an important therapeutic approach in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the scientific community has made a remarkable effort to discover new and effective molecules with the ability to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The natural function of this enzyme is to catalyze the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain. Thus, its inhibition increases the levels of this neurochemical and improves the cholinergic functions in patients with AD alleviating the symptoms of this neurological disorder. In r

Rodents represent over 40% of known mammal species and are found in various terrestrial habitats. They are significant reservoirs for zoonotic viruses, including harmful pathogens such as arenaviruses and hantaviruses, yet knowledge of their hosts and distributions is limited. Therefore, characterizing the virome profile in these animals is invaluable for outbreak preparedness, especially in potential hotspots of mammal diversity. This study included 681 organs from 124 rodents and one Chinese tree shrew collected from Yunnan Province, China, during 2020-2021. Metagenomic analysis revealed uni

Up to 1.6 million tons of waste is produced annually by each of more than 21,000 concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) located in the United States (USA). These operations give rise to externalities, including adverse local and global health impacts from CAFO waste emissions, which can potentially outweigh their economic viability. However, a shortage of evidence synthesis research exclusively on the impacts of USA-based CAFO waste emissions may hinder effective policy development. This scoping review (ScR) study, adhering to the guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute, conducted

Increased use of fossil fuels has led to global warming with concomitant increases in the severity and frequency of extreme weather events such as wildfires and sand and dust storms. These changes have led to increases in air pollutants such as particulate matter and greenhouse gases. Global warming is also associated with increases in pollen season length and pollen concentration. Particulate matter, greenhouse gases, and pollen synergistically increase the incidence and severity of allergic diseases. Other indirect factors such as droughts, flooding, thunderstorms, heat waves, water pollutio
