Bioactivity assay coupled with molecular networking for the discovery of antioxidants from purslane.

This study presents an innovative integration of bioactivity-guided isolation with molecular networking for discovery of the antioxidants from purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), which is popular as a medicinal and edible plant worldwide. This strategy led to the isolation and characterization of 31 indoline amide glucosides (IAGs), including 21 previously undescribed ones, namely portuoleramides A-U. Among them, nine compounds showed stronger DPPH radical scavenging activity than vitamin C (EC50 = 24.66 μM), compound 21 is strongest (EC50 = 15.70 μM). Almost all IAGs displayed ABTS radical scav

Evaluation of anti-sickling effects of two varieties of Cajanus cajan (L.) Huth on sickle cell beta thalassemia.

ETHNO-PHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Globally, the prevalence of sickle cell disease is on the rise, with developing countries experiencing particularly alarming mortality rate compared to developed nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations (UN) have acknowledged sickle cell disease as a significant global public health concern. Unfortunately, a cure for this condition is yet to be discovered, and existing allopathic treatments, while offering relief, come with serious side effects. In recent times, there has been a growing interest in exploring the potential of medicinal pla

Alkylphthalides with intracellular triglyceride metabolism-promoting activity from the rhizomes of Cnidium officinale Makino.

Methanol extract of the Cnidium officinale Makino rhizome, which is used as a crude drug Cnidium Rhizome (Cnidii Rhizoma; "Senkyu" in Japanese) and is listed in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia XVIII, showed intracellular triglyceride metabolism-promoting activity in high glucose-pretreated HepG2 cells. Thirty-five constituents, including two new alkylphthalide glycosides, senkyunosides A (1) and B (2), and a neolignan with a new stereoisomeric structure (3), were isolated in the extract. Their stereostructures were elucidated based on chemical and spectroscopic evidence. Among the isolates, several

Anti-Mayaro virus activity of a hydroethanolic extract from Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L. G. Lohmann leaves.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mayaro fever is a neglected tropical disease. The region of the most significant circulation of the Mayaro virus (MAYV) is the Amazon rainforest, situated in remote areas that are difficult to access and where medicine is scarce. Thus, the regional population uses plants as an alternative for the treatment of various diseases. Fridericia chica is an endemic plant of tropical regions used in traditional medicine to treat fever, malaise, inflammation, and infectious diseases such as hepatitis B. However, its antiviral activity is poorly understood. AIM OF THE STU

[Effect of stevia on the picture of peripheral blood under exposure to vibration].

There were investigated changes in the peripheral blood of rabbits under prolonged exposure to vibration (5, 10, 20, 30 days). In a separate series of experiments, the nature of changes in the peripheral blood was investigated under the combined action of vibration and stevia leaves. Contained in stevia biologically active substances were found to accelerate metabolism in bone marrow stem cells, promote the compensatory ability of the organism, thereby providing the resistance of the body to the vibration factor.

Phytomedicines (medicines derived from plants) for sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common recessively inherited disorder of haemoglobin affecting peoples originating from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Mediterranean basin, the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean and South America. The homozygous state (SS) is associated with complications and a reduced life expectancy. Phytomedicines (medicine derived from plants in their original state) encompass much of what the populations most affected would encounter in terms of plant-remedies from traditional healers. There has been little in the way of systematic appraisal of their be

Secondary open-angle glaucoma in histiocytosis X.

A 9 month-old boy developed secondary open-angle glaucoma associated with fever and multiple lytic bone lesions 2 1/2 months after cataract aspiration. An open bone biopsy provided a diagnosis of histiocytosis X. Hisiocytes similar to those in the bone were identified in a specimen of aqueous humor from the affected eye. No other cells were found. The abnormal histiocytes may have caused the glaucoma by infiltrating the trabecular angle structures and mechanically obstructing aqueous outflow from the eye.
