Self-help guided by trained lay providers for generalized anxiety disorder in older adults: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Only a small proportion of older patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) seek professional help. Difficulties in accessing treatment may contribute to this problem. Guided self-help based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (GSH-CBT) is one way of promoting access to psychological treatment. Moreover, because the therapist's role in GSH-CBT is limited to supporting the patient, this role could be assumed by trained and supervised lay providers (LPs) instead of licensed providers. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of GSH-CBT guided by LPs

Head Cooling Prior to Exercise in the Heat Does Not Improve Cognitive Performance.

This study investigated the effectiveness of head cooling on cognitive performance after 30 min and 60 min of running in the heat. Ten moderately-trained, non-heat-acclimated, male endurance athletes (mean age: 22 ± 6.6 y; height: 1.78 ± 0.10 m; body-mass: 75.7 ± 15.6 kg; VO2peak: 51.6 ± 4.31 mL-1>kg-1>min) volunteered for this study. Participants performed two experimental trials: head cooling versus no-cooling (within-subjects factor with trial order randomized). For each trial, participants wore a head-cooling cap for 15 min with the cap either cooled to 0°C (HC) or not cooled (22°C; CON).

A shared mealtime approach to improving social and nutritional functioning among older adults living alone: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Older adults living alone are at increased risk of malnutrition as well as social isolation. Previous research has evaluated psychosocial interventions aimed at improving social support for older adults living alone. One meta-analysis in particular has suggested that multimodal psychosocial interventions are more effective than unimodal interventions. As such, it may be more effective to deliver an intervention which combines nutritional and social support together. Consequently, we designed the RelAte intervention, which focuses on shared mealtimes as a source of combined social a

Difficulty with learning of exercise instructions associated with 'working memory' dysfunction and frontal glucose hypometabolism in a patient with very mild subcortical vascular dementia with knee osteoarthritis.

We present a patient with no dementia, depression or apathy, who had difficulty in learning self-exercise instructions. The patient was an 80-year-old right-handed woman who was admitted to a rehabilitation unit to receive postoperative rehabilitation after a femoral neck fracture. She was instructed quadriceps isometric exercises to perform 10 repetitions and to hold each stretch for 10 s. She performed the exercise correctly with motivation, but she had difficulty in learning the number of repetitions and the duration of each stretch. She had no history of cerebrovascular accident and the ne

AI-assisted haematology: machine learning-based prediction of iron-deficiency anaemia from reticulocyte maturation indices.

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most prevalent hematological disorder globally, significantly impairing physical capacity and cognitive development. Early detection is crucial; however, conventional diagnostic methods often have limitations. Machine learning (ML) can enhance predictive accuracy by analyzing complex hematological parameters, including reticulocyte maturation indices. This study aimed to develop and compare multiple ML algorithms for IDA prediction and to identify the most effective model for potential clinical use. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional st

Cerebral Spinal Fluid Volumetrics and Paralimbic Predictors of Executive Dysfunction in Congenital Heart Disease: A Machine Learning Approach Informing Mechanistic Insights.

The relationship between increased cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) ventricular compartments, structural and microstructural dysmaturation, and executive function in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is unknown. Here, we leverage a novel machine-learning data-driven technique to delineate interrelationships between CSF ventricular volume, structural and microstructural alterations, clinical risk factors, and sub-domains of executive dysfunction in adolescent CHD patients. We trained random forest regression models to predict measures of executive function (EF) from the NIH Toolbox, the D

Interventions to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare staff in nursing homes; An integrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: : The incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders have been consistently high in nursing sectors and are a significant cost to the health service due to absenteeism. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are more common among healthcare workers in nursing homes due to the high dependency needs of older persons which often include need for help with self-care and mobility. Therefore, staff are exposed to potential injury associated with moving and handling patients. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders significantly impact on the quality of life of affected individuals, c

Deep learning-based automatic adenoid segmentation and a novel volume-based index for adenoid hypertrophy assessment.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which can impair cognitive development and affect craniofacial development. Given that adenoids typically regress with age and may respond to oral appliance therapy, early identification, clear orthodontic indications, and timely referral are essential for effective management. A major challenge in this process is accurately assessing adenoid volume and quantifying nasopharyngeal obstruction in three dimensions. To address this, we developed a deep learning-based method using cone-beam computed tomogr
