We report 13 cases of female urethral diverticula which were diagnosed at the Mishina Urological Office between July, 1984 and June, 1987. The 8 cases among them were discovered between July, 1986 and June, 1987 in the office, because the positive pressure urethrography has been energetically performed to detect female urethral diverticulum since November, 1985. The number of female outpatients in this period was 285, and the occurrence rate of the female urethral diverticula was 2.8%. Small intestine diverticula are infrequent. These acquired pulsion diverticula are postulated to be a result of intestinal dyskinesis. Usually asymptomatic, they can produce a variety of disorders such as malabsorption, hemorrhage, diverticulitis, and perforation. The rarest complication appears to be enterolith formation and obstruction. It is postulated that dyskinesis and stasis leads to bacterial overgrowth causing decomposition of bile salts allowing precipitation and concretion. A 72-year-old woman who had been given heavy premedication nonetheless developed severe retching at the beginning of a gastroscopy (for suspected gastric ulcer) when the instrument had been advanced only as far as the throat. The investigation was at once terminated, but barium swallow immediately afterwards revealed rupture at the middle third of the oesophagus, with contrast medium flowing into the mediastinum. We have reported three cases of appendiceal diverticulosis diagnosed by barium enema examination, and reviewed the radiographic and clinical findings. An awareness of this lesion is important, since diverticulitis of the appendix may occur in up to two thirds of patients with DA.
