Latent Class Analysis of Syndemic Factors Associated with Sustained Viral Suppression among Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Clients in Miami, 2017.

The study's objective was to identify the association between sustained viral suppression (all viral load tests < 200 copies/ml per year) and patterns of co-occurring risk factors including, mental health, substance use, sexual risk behavior, and adverse social conditions for people with HIV (PWH). Latent class analysis followed by multivariable logistic regression was conducted for 6554 PWH in the Miami-Dade County Ryan White Program during 2017, and a five-class model was selected. Compared to Class 1 (no risk factors), the odds of achieving sustained viral suppression was significantly lowe

Fatal infection caused by Cytauxzoon felis in a captive-reared jaguar (Panthera onca).

Fatal infections with Cytauxzoon felis are common in domestic cats, and jaguars (Panthera onca) are believed carriers of this protozoan. Fatal C. felis infections have never been described in jaguars before. Thus, this study describes such an infection in a 5-month-old captive-reared jaguar that presented hyporexia and died at 26 days after the first clinical signs. During necropsy, samples were taken from several tissues, some were fixed in 10% formalin and process for histopathological diagnosis, and some samples were used for DNA extraction, amplification via PCR and sequencing of the poten

Water heating immersion rod fatalities and their injury pattern characteristics.

Immersion rod is a very low-cost electrical device. It is based on simple working principle and widely used in developing nations to heat water for various domestic needs. However, the literature about electrocution caused by it is nearly absent. This is despite its usage being potentially hazardous, with almost sure fatal outcome in cases of mishandling. Data was gathered from 2011 to 2020, via inquest and autopsy reports, regarding electrocution deaths related to it. 6 cases were identified. All consisted of females in domestic settings, as the unique epidemiology in stark contrast to the ex

Zoonotic Risk: One More Good Reason Why Cats Should Be Kept Away from Bats.

Bats are often unfairly depicted as the direct culprit in the current COVID-19 pandemic, yet the real causes of this and other zoonotic spillover events should be sought in the human impact on the environment, including the spread of domestic animals. Here, we discuss bat predation by cats as a phenomenon bringing about zoonotic risks and illustrate cases of observed, suspected or hypothesized pathogen transmission from bats to cats, certainly or likely following predation episodes. In addition to well-known cases of bat rabies, we review other diseases that affect humans and might eventually

A Legionnaires' Disease Cluster in a Private Building in Italy.

Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a severe pneumonia caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Legionella. This is a major public health concern and infections are steadily increasing worldwide. Several sources of infection have been identified, but they have not always been linked to human isolates by molecular match. The well-known Legionella contamination of private homes has rarely been associated with the acquisition of the disease, although some patients never left their homes during the incubation period. This study demonstrated by genomic matching between clinical and environmental Legione

Angiostrongylus minasensis n. sp.: new species found parasitizing coatis (Nasua nasua) in an urban protected area in Brazil.

Currently, there are 21 species of Angiostrongylus that parasitize the pulmonary or mesenteric arteries of wild and domestic rodents, felids, canids and human. Species of Angiostrongylus have cosmopolitan distribution covering tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. The procyonid Nasua nasua (coati) is a reservoir host for a wide variety of parasites that may be harmful to its populations or may contain etiological agents with zoonotic potential. In urban areas, coatis are usually found in close association with humans and domestic animals. We morphologically and molecularly characterized

Ultrastructure of Hepatocytes from Laboratory Mice Fed a Standard Dry Laboratory Animal Diet.

The significant destructive changes in ultrastructure of hepatocytes from laboratory mice kept in different vivariums in Moscow and fed with dry laboratory animal diets acquired from different domestic manufacturers that were not standardized for initial products were demonstrated using electron microscopy. Furthermore, disruption in the ultrastructure of liver parenchymal cells occurred regardless of the animal status (SPF or conventional), conditions of various vivariums, as well as the feed manufacturer. At the same time, studies on ultrastructure of liver hepatocytes from mice kept in the

Game Animal Density, Climate, and Tick-Borne Encephalitis in Finland, 2007-2017.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an endemic infection of public health importance in Finland. We investigated the effect of ecologic factors on 2007-2017 TBE trends. We obtained domestic TBE case data from the National Infectious Diseases Register, weather data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and data from the Natural Resources Institute in Finland on mammals killed by hunters yearly in game management areas. We performed a mixed-effects time-series analysis with time lags on weather and animal parameters, adding a random effect to game management areas. During 200

Prevalence and genotype identification of Toxoplasma gondii in suburban rodents collected at waste disposal sites.

To assess the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in native and commensal rodents as indicators of environmental pollution, we analyzed brain tissue from small mammals collected on legal and illegal waste sites in the Slovenian and Croatian parts of Istria. A total of 136 animals and five species of the family Muridae were analyzed: black rat (Rattus rattus), domestic mouse (Mus musculus), wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus), striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius), and yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis). Using quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR), T. gondii DNA was detecte

Potential of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) to transmit yellow fever virus in urban areas in Central Africa.

Yellow Fever (YF) remains a major public health issue in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. In Africa, most YF outbreaks are reported in West Africa. However, urban outbreaks occurred in 2016 in both Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and imported cases were reported in Chinese workers coming back from Africa. In Central Africa, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo host a high proportion of non-vaccinated populations increasing the risk of urban outbreaks. The main vector is Aedes aegypti and possibly, Aedes albopictus, both be

Development of a novel anoxic/oxic fed-batch membrane bioreactor (AFMBR) based on gravity-driven and partial aeration modes: A pilot scale study.

A novel pilot gravity-driven anoxic/oxic fed-batch membrane bioreactor (AFMBR) was developed to treat real domestic wastewater. In this process, the anoxic and oxic stages created favorable conditions for stable and continuous nitritation-denitritation/denitrification-nitrification links without adding external carbon source. Excellent removals of organic carbon/nitrogen (NH4+-N: 71-97%, COD: 78-96%, UV254: 70-95%, TN: 20-60%) and spontaneous permeability recovery were achieved simultaneously. It was assessed at micro levels by characterizing sludge particle morphologies, microbiota functional

Campylobacter colonization is not associated with proventricular dilatation disease in psittacines.

Psittacine proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) is a neurological disease caused by parrot bornaviruses. A competing theory suggests that intestinal colonization by Campylobacter species may also be a potential cause of PDD or that their presence may be required for disease development. This theory proposes that PDD results from the activities of antiganglioside antibodies on enteric neurons in a manner similar to the pathogenesis of Guillain-Barré syndrome in humans. We therefore cultured feces from domestic chickens as well as from multiple parrot species to determine whether Campylobacte

Chewing Lice of Swan Geese (Anser cygnoides): New Host-Parasite Associations.

Chewing lice (Phthiraptera) that parasitize the globally threatened swan goose Anser cygnoides have been long recognized since the early 19th century, but those records were probably biased towards sampling of captive or domestic geese due to the small population size and limited distribution of its wild hosts. To better understand the lice species parasitizing swan geese that are endemic to East Asia, we collected chewing lice from 14 wild geese caught at 3 lakes in northeastern Mongolia. The lice were morphologically identified as 16 Trinoton anserinum (Fabricius, 1805), 11 Ornithobius domes

Violence-related mild traumatic brain injury in women: identifying a triad of postinjury disorders.

Violence against women whether from domestic partner abuse, sex trafficking injuries, or sexual assault is a pervasive health problem without racial or social boundaries. Regardless of cause, violence results in a complex triad of physical, emotional, and psychological injuries. There is clear evidence that female victims of violence or "battered women" experience brain injury. What is less certain is whether the constellations of events surrounding brain injury including postconcussion syndrome, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder are acute symptoms after the brain injury, premorbid

Comparison of two coproparasitological techniques for the detection of Platynosomum sp. infection in cats.

Platynosomum sp. is the etiologic agent of platynosomiasis, a hepatic disease that affects domestic cats. The parasite develops in the bile ducts and gallbladder, causing severe hepato-biliary disease. Considering the importance of the disease and the increase in the number of households with cats, the aim of this study was to compare two different techniques for the detection of the parasite's eggs and to assess the frequency of Platynosomum sp. infection in cats. Forty fecal samples from cats of different ages, from an animal shelter in the city of Salvador, Bahia State, Brazil, were subject

[Occurrence and geographical distribution of antibodies to hepatitis E virus in wild boars of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany (2011)].

Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) may cause acute hepatitis in humans. In industrialised countries, acute hepatitis E generally occurs only sporadically. However, in recent years an increase in the number of reported cases has been observed. Concerning autochthonous, non-travel-associated cases, a zoonotic transmission, particularly from the animal reservoirs of domestic pig and wild boar, and via undercooked meat is assumed. Meanwhile, HEV has been detected in domestic pig holdings as well as in wild boars in many regions of the world, including Europe and Germany. The samples from wild boars in the Ge

Improved semen collection method for wild felids: urethral catheterization yields high sperm quality in African lions (Panthera leo).

For wild and domestic felids, electroejaculation (EE) is the most common semen collection method. However, the equipment is expensive, there is a risk of urine contamination and animals usually show strong muscular contraction despite general anesthesia. Accordingly, we tested the feasibility of a different approach using urethral catheterization (UC) in seven African lions, previously described for domestic cats only. After general anesthesia with the α2-agonist medetomidine (which also stimulates semen release into the urethra) and ketamine, a transrectal ultrasound was performed to locate t

Pathogen and rodenticide exposure in American badgers (Taxidea taxus) in California.

Urban and agricultural land use may increase the risk of disease transmission among wildlife, domestic animals, and humans as we share ever-shrinking and fragmented habitat. American badgers (Taxidae taxus), a species of special concern in California, USA, live in proximity to urban development and often share habitat with livestock and small peridomestic mammals. As such, they may be susceptible to pathogens commonly transmitted at this interface and to anticoagulant rodenticides used to control nuisance wildlife on agricultural lands. We evaluated free-ranging badgers in California for expos

Canine and feline intracranial meningiomas: an updated review.

Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumours in dogs and cats. There are several morphological phenotypes of this extra-axial neoplasm and they show predilections for certain anatomical locations. There have been a number of attempts to apply the current World Health Organization (WHO) classification for human meningiomas to dogs and cats and to obtain a universal classification scheme for domestic animals. Recently, certain enzymes involved in tumour growth have been recognised as biological markers and have been related to degrees of malignancy. The secondary effects of meningiomas

Physical violence by partner during pregnancy and use of prenatal care in rural India.

The role of physical violence during pregnancy on receipt of prenatal care is poorly understood, particularly for South Asian countries that have high levels of both fertility and domestic violence. Data from the 1998/1999 Indian National Family Health Survey and a 2002/2003 follow-up survey that re-interviewed women in four states were analyzed, examining the association between physical violence during pregnancy and the uptake of prenatal care. Women who experienced physical violence during pregnancy were less likely to receive prenatal care, less likely to receive a home-visit from a health
