Foodborne listeriosis. WHO Working Group.

Listeria monocytogenes is widely distributed in the environment and may be transmitted to man through contamination of foodstuffs at any point from source to kitchen. Milk and dairy products, meat, poultry, vegetables, salads and seafoods have all been found to be contaminated. Unlike most other foodborne pathogens, L. monocytogenes can multiply in refrigerators (4-6 degrees C). Pasteurization reduces their numbers in raw milk to levels that do not pose an appreciable risk to human health. The infection has relatively low morbidity but a high case fatality. At greatest risk are pregnant women a

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in four free-ranging odontocetes.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is a zoonotic pathogen that has been recovered from a variety of companion, production, laboratory, wildlife and avian species. The prevalence of this bacterium varies geographically but is generally considered widespread within the terrestrial environment with human exposure principally by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Pseudotuberculosis, due to Y. pseudotuberculosis, is a common cause of mortality in captive exotic birds and mammals and, according to the OIE WAHIS-Wild Interface, is the 8th most frequently reported disease/infection for all wildlife wor

Synergistic cadmium immobilization and maize growth promotion by chitosan modified biochar loaded with Bacillus subtilis composites: mechanistic insights and life-cycle assessment.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination endangers soil health and food safety, with conventional biochar-microbe composites limited by low bacterial loading and poor microbial persistence. This study developed a novel chitosan-modified biochar loaded with Bacillus subtilis (CSBC@BS.sp) for synergistic Cd immobilization and maize growth promotion in contaminated soil. Chitosan modification introduced abundant Amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl group (-OH), enhancing biochar bacterial loading capacity and Cd2+ complexation. The composite significantly reduced DTPA-extractable Cd by 57.5%, acid-soluble Cd by 62.1%, an

Detection of Unamplified E. coli O157 DNA Extracted from Large Food Samples Using a Gold Nanoparticle Colorimetric Biosensor.

Rapid detection of foodborne pathogens such as E. coli O157 is essential in reducing the prevalence of foodborne illness and subsequent complications. Due to their unique colorimetric properties, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) can be applied in biosensor development for affordability and accessibility. In this work, a GNP biosensor was designed for visual differentiation between target (E. coli O157:H7) and non-target DNA samples. Results of DNA extracted from pure cultures indicate high specificity and sensitivity to as little as 2.5 ng/µL E. coli O157 DNA. Further, the biosensor successfully iden

A deadly feast: Elucidating the burden of orally acquired acute Chagas disease in Latin America - Public health and travel medicine importance.

Over the past two decades, several countries in Latin American, particularly Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia, have experienced multiple outbreaks of oral Chagas disease. Transmission occurs secondary to contamination of food or beverages by triatomine (kissing bug) feces containing infective Trypanosoma cruzi metacyclic trypomastigotes. Orally transmitted infections are acute and potentially fatal. Oral Chagas transmission carries important clinical implications from management to public health policies compared to vector-borne transmission. This review aims to discuss the contemporary situati

Aflatoxin B1-Adsorbing Capability of Pleurotus eryngii Mycelium: Efficiency and Modeling of the Process.

Aflatoxin B1 (AfB1) is a carcinogenic mycotoxin that contaminates food and feed worldwide. We determined the AfB1-adsorption capability of non-viable Pleurotus eryngii mycelium, an edible fungus, as a potential means for removal of AfB1 from contaminated solutions. Lyophilized mycelium was produced and made enzymatically inert by sterilization at high temperatures. The material thus obtained was characterized by scanning electron microscopy with regard to the morpho-structural properties of the mycotoxin-adsorbing surfaces. The active surfaces appeared rough and sponge-like. The AfB1-mycelium

Response of leaf and fine roots proteomes of Salix viminalis L. to growth on Cr-rich tannery waste.

The tannery industry is a major source of anthropogenic chromium (Cr) contamination due to the large amounts of solid waste produced and its problematic management. The unique composition of tannery waste, usually high concentrations of Cr and other metals as well as organic matter and nutrients, makes it a great risk for soil and water environment but also a possible effective fertilizer for non-food plants that can tolerate metals. The goal of this study was to understand the adaptation mechanism of Salix viminalis to growth on Cr-rich tannery waste from an active landfill. We used a proteom

Aspartame prevents the karyomegaly induced by ochratoxin A in rat kidney.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus ochraceus as well as other moulds. This mycotoxin contaminates animal feed and food. OTA is immunosuppressive, genotoxic, teratogenic, carcinogenic and is nephrotoxic in all animal species studied so far. OTA inhibits protein synthesis and induces lipid peroxidation. Since it seems impossible to avoid completely contamination of foodstuffs by toxigenic fungi, it is necessary to investigate the possible ways of limiting such toxicity. An attempt to prevent OTA-induced nephrotoxic and genotoxic effects, mainly the karyomegaly, has been ma

Free range eggs does not mean safe eggs: an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to free range eggs.

An outbreak of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium with closely related Multiple Locus Variable-number Tandem Repeat Analysis (MLVA) patterns was detected by routine surveillance by the Australian Capital Territory Health Protection Service in May 2018. The outbreak consisted of three cases in 2018 (MLVA 03-10-10-09-496) and one in 2016 (MLVA 03-10-09-09-496), who reported eating home-cooked eggs from the same local producer. Environmental investigations found significant problems with egg cleaning, hand hygiene and documentation of food safety procedures on farm. Environmental samples col

Recent developments in molecular sub-typing of Listeria monocytogenes.

As a vast majority of the human listeriosis cases are caused by serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b strains, it is imperative that strains from clinical as well as from food and environment are further characterised so that accurate and timely epidemiological determination of sources of the contamination can be established to minimise the disease burden. Recent developments in the field of genomics provide a great opportunity to use these tools towards the development of molecular sub-typing techniques with a greater degree of discrimination spanning the entire length of the genome. This brief review

[Hiking and useful advices to patients: part II].

The attraction of walking as a pastime has grown enormously in Switzerland over the past few years. Synonym of health and wellbeing, this activity carries some risks which more and more patients are questioning; answering these questions is not always obvious, so we wanted to tackle the subject. This second section concerns risks linked to food which can be found in the forest. Echinococcosis is an underestimated parasite which affects a large proportion of foxes in Switzerland. This infectious disease can also affect man following contamination which usually occurs through eating berries. Pre

An outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium DT104 food poisoning associated with eating beef.

An outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium DT104 infection in Shropshire in May 1995 was identified when four isolates were noted to be from members or supporters of a local football team that had held several social functions in the same week. The subsequent investigation identified 16 people with gastrointestinal symptoms and 12 with microbiologically confirmed infection. The outbreak was complex, associated with several social functions on different days, but infection was associated with eating beef at a public house. A number of errors were detected in the cooking, storage, and handling of the

Biological warfare in the twentieth century: lessons from the past, challenges for the future.

Biological warfare and fear of biological warfare have affected our wars, our peace, and our research throughout this century. During World War I, animals were deliberately infected with glanders. During World War II, biowarfare research was carried out by Japan, Germany, England, and the United States. Japan carried out biological warfare attacks in China. England used biological warfare for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. In the 1950s and 1960s, Army researchers released bacteria over U.S. cities in biological warfare tests. The most frequent biological warfare terrorist episodes hav

Cadmium nephropathy.

Cadmium is an inessential trace metal which accumulates in human tissues from contamination of food, water or air. The kidney is the critical organ following long-term, low-level absorption either by inhalation or ingestion; accumulation occurring in tubular epithelium in the form of a cadmium-metallothionein complex, giving rise to tubular dysfunction. In a group of 12 cadmium workers some of whom were followed for up to 16 years, tubular proteinuria, renal glycosuria, aminoaciduria, hypercalciuria and defects of concentration and acidification have been observed. Two men became recurrent ren

Synergistic β-cyclodextrin/ZIF-8 magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for sensitive detection of bisphenol A in food.

Developing advanced adsorbents with integrated recognition and detection capabilities for trace contaminants in complex matrices remains a critical challenge in environmental monitoring and food safety control. Herein, we report an innovative magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MZMIPs), strategically engineering magnetic graphene oxide as the core substrate, functionalized with β-cyclodextrin-modified ZIF-8 as a bifunctional monomer and methacrylic acid as co-monomer. The optimized MZMIPs demonstrate remarkable bisphenol A adsorption performance, achieving an exceptional capacity of 40.88

Prevalence, antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of Campylobacter isolated from retail duck meat in Southern China.

Campylobacter is a significant foodborne pathogen. However, most current studies have focused on chicken-derived Campylobacter, while systematic epidemiological investigations on duck-derived Campylobacter remain relatively limited. Given that China is the largest duck meat producer globally, conducting systematic epidemiological surveys on duck-borne Campylobacter is of considerable public health importance. This study analyzed the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and virulence genes of Campylobacter isolates from retail duck meat in Southern China. A total of 350 duck meat samples
