The development of radiological changes in two patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) Type I H/S is described. Radiological findings reveal enlargement of the sella in one patient, impression of the basilar skull in the other patient. Sclerosis and thickening of the base of skull was observed in both patients. The mandibular necks were short with striking flattening of the superior surfaces of the condyles, when the patients reached adult age. At the age of 12, hypertelorism and spaced teeth were already present in both patients. In addition, they showed early costal, clavicular and scapula

It has been shown that CLL is characterized by a piling up of highly differentiated lymphocytic cells. These cells have the structural and metabolic characteristics of a neoplastic cell line of B lymphocytes (except in cases of "T-cell CLL"). However, they lack the immunoglobulin-secreting ability of normal B cells, and are immunologically incompetent and inert. Next to this population, there is a normal but reduced population of B cells and a periodically slightly increased T-cell population. The accumulation of pathological cells is based on a 10-fold increase in proliferation of cells that

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) frequently affects the joints of the hands, with joint space narrowing (JSN) representing an important early marker of structural damage. The semi-quantitative Sharp/van der Heijde (SvdH) scoring system is widely used in clinical practice but is inherently subjective and susceptible to observer variability. Moreover, the complex anatomy of the wrist and substantial overlap of carpal bones pose challenges for automated quantitative assessment of wrist JSN on routine radiographs. This study aimed to introduce a novel quantitative assessment perspective and to clinically

Percutaneous pelvic screwing (PPS) enables fixation of traumatic or atraumatic fractures with little or no displacement, or displaced but reduced fractures, and preventive fixation of primary or secondary tumoral lesions. It is a relatively recent technique, and indications are evolving with progress in pre- and intra-operative imaging. Morbidity is lower than with open surgery. PPS is classically performed under fluoroscopy; computer-assisted surgery is of great interest, enabling analysis of safe bone corridors. Planning is based on image processing tools included in CT DICOM viewer packages

Chronically instable knee-joints progressively draw to an arthrosis as a result of the irregular kinematic. Different operative techniques to replace the anterior cruciate ligament using exclusively autologous, homologous or heterologous grafts in all cases of chronic instabilities, but the primary sole suture of acute ACL injuries, too, didn't show long-term stable results in many cases. Recurrent ruptures were found first of all at the intraarticular edge of the femoral tunnel caused by permanent abrasions of the replacement. The reason why is the large angle of the ACL and each replacement

BACKGROUND: The Psoriatic Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring System (PsAMRIS) and MRI Whole-Body Scoring System for Inflammation in Peripheral Joints and Entheses in Inflammatory Arthritis (MRI-WIPE) have not been used together to assess treatment of psoriatic arthritis in a clinical trial. We aimed to assess the effect of apremilast treatment on inflammation, with outcomes measured by PsAMRIS and MRI-WIPE.
METHODS: MOSAIC was a phase 4, multicentre, single-arm, open-label study conducted at 29 sites across ten countries (Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, Swit

BACKGROUND: Barrier membranes have been used to promote bone ingrowth on implants with dehiscences and fenestrations. Membranes also have been used to protect defects adjacent to implants placed at the time of extraction. The concept of guided bone regeneration relates to preferentially allowing cells from bone to migrate into various defects while excluding fibrous tissue and epithelium. The purpose of these procedures is to enhance bone-to-implant contact at the treated sites and to prevent mucosal complications.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to report clinical outcomes for implan

A 15-year-old right-handed boy presented 7 weeks after a hyperextension injury while playing basketball with a suspected metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint dislocation to his right thumb and subsequent reduction by his mother at the time of injury. Initial radiographs were negative for acute fracture or dislocation. However, pain and stiffness persisted in the MCP joint, and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an incarcerated radial sesamoid and a proximal ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury with migration of the ulnar sesamoid under the proximal UCL, a finding not previously do

An 86-year-old male patient developed paresthesia in both hands, and six months later, pancytopenia was noted. He was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome following bone marrow aspiration. Despite high serum vitamin B12 level, elevated level of serum homocysteine, positive anti-intrinsic factor antibody, and T2-weighted hyperintense lesions on spinal cord MRI led to a diagnosis of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord. Treatment with intramuscular mecobalamin injections improved the pancytopenia and resolved the MRI lesions. The pancytopenia in this patient was considered to be

Background: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare disorder caused by heterozygous ACVR1 pathogenic variants and is characterized by both progressive heterotopic ossification of the soft tissues and congenital malformations of the great toe. In addition to pathological skeletal metamorphosis, patients with FOP experience diverse neurological symptoms such as chronic pain and involuntary movements; however, little is known about the association between FOP and epileptic seizures. Methods: We report the case of a young boy with FOP who sustained multiple major fractures due

Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is a rather uncommon presentation in sickle cell disease (SCD), most frequently happening in the context of long bone fractures following trauma. On the other hand, nontraumatic scenarios and nonorthopedic injuries have been documented to cause fat embolisms. This article describes the case of an 18-year-old male patient who had a known case of SCD (SS pattern). The patient complained of hip pain, and it was discovered that he had avascular necrosis of the right femoral head. The patient was started on opioid analgesics and started to respond to treatment; however,

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a highly prevalent condition worldwide and a major cause of disability. The majority of patients with CLBP are diagnosed with chronic non-specific low back pain (CNLBP) due to an unknown pathological cause. Manual therapy (MT) is an integral aspect of traditional Chinese medicine and is recognized as Tuina in China. It involves techniques like bone-setting and muscle relaxation manipulation. Despite its clinical efficacy in treating CNLBP, the underlying mechanisms of MT remain unclear. In animal experiments aimed at investigating these mechanisms, one of the ma

Multiple synostoses syndrome (OMIM: #186500, #610017, #612961, #617898) is a genetically heterogeneous group of autosomal dominant diseases characterized by abnormal bone unions. The joint fusions frequently involve the hands, feet, elbows or vertebrae. Pathogenic variants in FGF9 have been associated with multiple synostoses syndrome type 3 (SYNS3). So far, only five different missense variants in FGF9 that cause SYNS3 have been reported in 18 affected individuals. Unlike other multiple synostoses syndromes, conductive hearing loss has not been reported in SYNS3. In this report, we describe t

Meningeal melanocytoma is an infrequent neoplasm of the central nervous system (CNS), especially in childhood and infancy. It was first described as an entity different from pigmented meningiomas and schwannomas in 1972, and few cases have been published so far. In this article, a 5-month-old male patient with meningeal melanocytoma is presented. This midline lesion was localized in the posterior fossa and manifested by hydrocephalus. The entire dural origin and extradural growing pattern in addition to the destruction of the adjacent occipital bone were the unexpected presentations since thes

Foveal disruption of the triangular fibrocartilage complex contributes to the instability of distal radioulnar joint. We have developed an arthroscopic transosseous foveal footprint repair technique, which maximizes the contact between the disrupted triangular fibrocartilage complex and its foveal footprint for better healing by using four sutures in a divergent configuration through a 1.6-mm bone tunnel. Twelve patients with triangular fibrocartilage complex foveal injuries who had undergone this repair technique were reviewed with a mean follow-up of 53 months. All patients achieved signific

Kenny-Caffey syndrome type 2 (KCS2) and osteocraniostenosis (OCS) are allelic disorders caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in the FAM111A gene. Both conditions are characterized by gracile bones, characteristic facial features, hypomineralized skull with delayed closure of fontanelles and hypoparathyroidism. OCS and KCS2 are often referred to as FAM111A-related syndromes as a group; although OCS presents with a more severe, perinatal lethal phenotype. We report a novel FAM111A mutation in a fetus with poorly ossified skull, proportionate long extremities with thin diaphysis, and hypopl

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that can manifest in any synovial joint under certain conditions. It leads to destruction of articular cartilage and adjacent bone, as well as formation of osteophytes at the edges of afflicted joint surfaces. Regarding the wrist, typical degenerative arthritis affects particular joints at a specific patient age, due to asymmetric load distribution and repetitive microtrauma. However, in the presence of instability or systemic diseases, early-onset degeneration can also impair the range of motion and grip strength in younger patients. Although adva

Snake bites are an uncommon injury requiring intervention by hand surgeons. While counteracting the effects of snake venom is the initial and urgent concern following a bite, infection caused by retention of a foreign body can present in a delayed fashion and may lead to increased morbidity. Standard radiographs of the injury should be carefully examined for foreign bodies, noting that retained snake teeth are somewhat radiolucent due to less mineralization as compared to bone and can be difficult to visualize. In our subject, a retained rattlesnake fang was found in association with a septic

BACKGROUND: Metatarsal osteotomy is a major means of treating mechanical metatarsalgia. Open techniques are widely used, and notably that described by Weil. They have, however, certain drawbacks, and new types of osteotomy have been developed. Percutaneous techniques are presently very much in favor, and Distal Metatarsal Minimally Invasive Osteotomy (DMMO) has emerged as a treatment for metatarsalgia. Although very widely used, it is poorly codified in the literature.
METHOD: The present study detailed DMMO techniques and their variants (oblique and reverse), with corresponding indications a

Sarcoidosis is characterised by the formation of noncaseating granulomas classically affecting lungs, lymph nodes and skin. Osteoarticular involvement affects up to 15% of patients; however, acro-osteolysis, destruction involving distal phalanges of fingers and toes, associated with sarcoidosis, is extremely rare. A 44-year-old woman with a history of biopsy-proven sarcoidosis managed with prednisone and methotrexate presented with swelling and pain in the distal fingers of her right hand without skin manifestations. Radiographic imaging showed erosion of distal phalanges on second, third and
