Predictive accuracy of gait speed for falls: An individual participant data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gait speed is included in the World Falls Guidelines (WFG) fall risk algorithm, yet its ability to discriminate fallers from non-fallers remains unclear. This individual participant data meta-analysis examined the discriminative ability of the WFG-recommended cut point (<0.8 m/s) and the performance of a higher cut point (<1.0 m/s) for predicting falls in community-dwelling older adults and clinical populations at elevated risk of falls. METHODS: Individual data from 28 studies with a quantitative measure of gait speed and at least three months of prospectively reported falls were

Comparison of Healthcare Expenditures Among Individuals With and Without Long COVID in the United States.

Long COVID increases healthcare utilization, yet differences in healthcare spending patterns between individuals with and without long COVID remain poorly characterized, especially at the national level. To evaluate differences in healthcare expenditures among U.S. adults with and without long COVID using nationally representative data. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2022 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), including 16 762 unweighted adults (weighted population: 239 915 159). Healthcare spending outcomes included total expenditures and specific categories including off

Allocating a scarce medical resource: liver transplant and lay individuals' patient prioritisation.

BACKGROUND: There is much debate on how scarce medical resources such as transplant organs should be allocated: in the UK, the NHS uses the principles of sickest first, prognosis and waiting list time - but not age [1]. Furthermore, it has recently been reported that in the UK younger patients tend to wait much longer than older patients for a liver transplant. The current study investigates younger and older lay people's preferences for the allocation of liver transplants using four criteria, the patient's age, time spent on the waiting list, pre-transplant life expectancy and post-transplant

Myofascial Release Techniques as an Adjunct Treatment in Individuals With Frozen Shoulder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Frozen shoulder is characterized by pain and progressive restriction of shoulder range of motion (ROM), leading to functional limitations. Myofascial release (MFR) techniques are commonly used in clinical practice, mainly as an adjunct to conventional physiotherapy, yet their effectiveness in frozen shoulder remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of MFR, primarily as an adjunct intervention, on pain, functional disability, and shoulder ROM in individuals with frozen shoulder. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect

Predicting individual differences in digital alcohol intervention effectiveness through multimodal data.

Digital interventions can change behaviors like alcohol use, but effectiveness varies widely across individuals. Accurately identifying non-responders-i.e., those least (vs. most) likely to change their behavior-before intervention delivery is difficult. Individual intervention effectiveness predictions from prior studies perform only slightly above chance (e.g., AUC ≈0.60; balanced accuracy ≈0.60). We present a novel approach integrating multimodal data across theory-driven domains-including psychological assessments, social network data, and neural responses to alcohol cues-to make ex-ante p

Group-based interventions for individuals with dual pathology: a preliminary focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Dual Pathology has a major impact on the individual's life and on society and is associated with worsening severity and persistence of both mental illness and addiction, which is why scientific evidence increasingly points treatment of patients with Dual Pathology. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate how participants in group therapy experience the group and their relationship with the professionals. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study using focus groups was conducted with 12 participants attending a Dual Pathology Group in a psychiatric hospital in Portugal. The data was analyzed using Bra

Individual trajectories of fertility with age highlight the costs of reproduction in a pre-industrial population.

Evolutionary theories predict that early-life reproductive effort should be favoured by selection at the cost of faster reproductive ageing, but empirical support for this trade-off remains mixed. Previous studies typically examined whether the rate of reproductive ageing varied among groups of individuals differing in early-life reproductive allocation. However, this approach assumes that all individuals have the same age at the onset of reproductive ageing. By analysing annual birth probabilities among women aged 16-50 years in a pre-industrial population of Nouvelle-France (Quebec, Canada),

Comparing the Single Maddox Rod Test to the Alternate Cover Test in Normal Individuals.

PURPOSE: The single Maddox rod test (SMRT) is a rapid subjective method for detecting ocular misalignment. In this study, we compared the prism single Maddox rod test (PSMRT) to the prism alternate cover test (PACT) in normal individuals to see if there was any disagreement. METHODS: Ocular alignment was measured at distance and near with the PSMRT and PACT in 52 normal participants. Secondary measurements included visual acuity, near point of convergence, and stereoacuity. RESULTS: The difference between each participants' measurements at near (ΔX') was 4.44 ± 3.87 Δ (p < .001) meaning each

The Fate of Coral Feeding Scars Following Predation by Individual Crown-of-Thorns Seastars.

Aggregated crown-of-thorns seastars (Acanthaster spp., COTS) in outbreak populations create large feeding scars that often result in complete coral colony mortality. In contrast, feeding scars produced by individual COTS may retain living coral tissue remnants, but the responses of these remnants post predation remain unknown. We tracked the fate of discrete feeding scars left after predation by individual Acanthaster cf. solaris from a low-density population at One Tree Reef on the Great Barrier Reef. We found that the average feeding scar size did not differ by season, despite variation in c

Use of Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring in Individuals With Elevated Lipoprotein(a): A Multicohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The utility of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring in individuals with elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment is currently unclear given the propensity of Lp(a) toward noncalcified plaque. OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to evaluate the interaction between elevated Lp(a) (>50 mg/dL) and CAC score, and the association of Lp(a) with ASCVD risk across strata of CAC. METHODS: A pooled cohort of participants without known ASCVD from 4 U.S.-based prospective cohort studies with baseline Lp(a) and CAC measurements was used. The

Everyday discrimination in individuals seeking treatment/receiving support for substance use and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing stigma/discrimination is common in individuals who use substances. However, those with caring responsibilities for individuals who use substances may also be stigmatised and discriminated against (known as affiliate, or courtesy stigma, or stigma-by-association). Comparatively little research has examined the experiences of those who may experience courtesy stigma. METHODS: We conducted an online survey recruiting individuals who were seeking/ receiving treatment for substance use (N = 175); individuals who have caregiving responsibility for somebody seeking or receiv

Individual level predictors of treatment use: A disaggregation of within- and between-person associations.

OBJECTIVE: Studies showing associations between impaired clinical functioning and treatment use are predominantly based on cross-sectional comparisons or a limited number of longitudinal assessments. Using these designs, it is unknown whether individuals engage in treatment on occasions of within-person symptom increases or social support reductions. This study examined the relations between depressive symptoms, family and friend support, and self-reported stressors and treatment use. METHOD: Participants (N = 1417) completed up to seven annual assessments assessing the study constructs. Mult

To Regulate or Not to Regulate? Situational and Individual Differences in Emotion Regulation Initiation in Daily Life.

Situational and individual differences shape how and why people regulate emotions, but whether emotion regulation is initiated remains understudied. We hypothesize that, for example, less familiar situations might be associated with more regulation initiation, and people who believe emotions are controllable initiate regulation more frequently. Using experience sampling (N = 216; 7x/14 days), we found that participants initiated regulation 60% of the time over the past 2 hr. As predicted, people initiated regulation in less familiar, less pleasant contexts, and with more dominant, less warm so

Examination of the relationship between perceived fatigue and occupational balance among individuals with stroke.

Fatigue is a common and debilitating consequence of stroke that may negatively affect occupational balance, a key component of meaningful engagement in daily life and well-being. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 192 individuals with stroke recruited from Kocaeli University Hospital. Participants completed the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Turkish version of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11-T). Spearman and Pearson correlation analyses were performed, followed by multiple linear regression. The primary Spearman analysis showed a weak and non-significant association

Investigating the rates of change in depressive symptoms for adults in individual, couple, and family therapy.

While individual therapy is a common treatment for depressive symptoms, adults with depressive symptoms also engage in couple and family therapy. To date, no studies have fully compared the effectiveness of these three therapy models in a naturalistic clinical setting. This study investigates the extent that the rates of changes in depressive symptoms across 16 sessions of treatment differ across individual, couple, and family therapy. We analyzed clinical data from the Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network (MFT-PRN; Johnson et al., 2016), which is clinical data from clinics ac

Experiences in close relationships, interpersonal trust and OXTR expression in individuals with childhood maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is essential for forming and maintaining intimate relationships. Individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM) often show impairments in interpersonal functioning, including trust and romantic attachment. The oxytocin system has been implicated in social behavior, yet the role of oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene expression in CM-related social functioning remains insufficiently understood. This study examined the impact of CM on social cognition in a large web-based sample and explored the association between CM and OXTR gene expression in a well-character
