Cardiovascular and Circulatory Responses to Acute Mental Stress Among Individuals With Ischemic Cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: We studied responses to acute mental stress in individuals with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) with and without heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). METHODS: Individuals with stable CAD ( N = 313, 45 with HFrEF) underwent a laboratory-based mental stress. HFrEF was defined as an ejection fraction of <40%. Hemodynamic reactivity and vasoconstriction during mental stress were evaluated using changes in systolic blood pressure and peripheral arterial tonometry, respectively. Immune function was assessed by measuring changes in interleukin-6 (IL-6) and circulatin

Effect of visual cues on gait and muscle coactivation asymmetry in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit pronounced gait asymmetry and elevated lower-limb muscle coactivation during walking. Although visual cues are known to enhance gait performance in PD, their effect on gait asymmetry and interlimb motor coordination remains unclear. AIM: Therefore, this study investigated the impact of visual cues on gait and on muscle coactivation asymmetry, as indicators of interlimb motor coordination during walking, in individuals with PD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, parallel-group study, 14 participants with idiopathic PD and 14 age-mat

Association of serum androgen levels with Framingham Cardiovascular Risk Score in individuals with obesity.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is strongly associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although traditional risk factors are incorporated into widely used cardiovascular risk scores such as the Framingham Cardiovascular Risk Score, hormonal alterations accompanying obesity, particularly changes in serum androgen levels, may also contribute to cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum androgen levels and estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk in individuals with obesity. METHODS: This retrospective study included 203 adults with obesity follow

Pilot and Feasibility Study of an Individualized Telehealth Exercise Program for People with Cystic Fibrosis.

Background: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) recognizes exercise as a critical part of managing cystic fibrosis (CF). This becomes even more important in the era of highly effective modulator therapy (HEMT) due to many people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) having decreased symptom burden and a newfound ability to tolerate exercise better. Our single-center pilot study was designed to assess the implementation of a remotely delivered, individualized, and comprehensive exercise program for pwCF. We aimed to determine the feasibility, safety and acceptance of this intervention. Methods: PwCF ≥ 1

Individual Differences in Error-Related Brain Activity and Post-Error Slowing in Children.

Errors play a crucial role in learning and goal-directed behavior by triggering cognitive adjustments to optimize future task performance. One such adjustment is post-error slowing (PES), the tendency to respond more slowly after an error. In adults, PES has been associated with regions implicated in error processing, including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and anterior insula. The prolonged maturation of these regions is thought to contribute to less efficient error processing in children and PES compared to adults. Additionally, while some errors may be immediately corrected, resulting

Individuals With Disabilities Receiving Care From a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes for the youngest eligible patients with disabilities enrolled in a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). We hypothesized that health (as defined by validated measures of function, mood, quality of life, and community engagement) and care satisfaction (as defined by perceptions of care delivery) would improve after 1 year compared with baseline, and health care use would be similar to benchmarks from the National PACE Association. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: PACE. PARTICIPANTS: N=51 individuals with disabilities aged 56-68 years.

Assessing Left Atrial Volume Indexation to Predict Mortality in Individuals With Overweight and Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Alternative indexation methods for left atrial volume (LAV) have been proposed to achieve better proportional scaling than the current standard body surface area indexation. However, there are limited data showing that these alternative indices provide long-term prognostic value in individuals with overweight or obesity. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the performance of various LAV indexation methods in predicting all-cause mortality in individuals with overweight or obesity. METHODS: We obtained data from the National Echocardiography Database Australia with l

Lateral reactive stepping responses differ between individuals with and without transfemoral amputation.

Effective reactive stepping is critical for preventing falls. Although falls are common in individuals with transfemoral amputation (TFA), mediolateral reactive stepping responses in this population remain poorly understood. This study investigated limb-specific mediolateral reactive stepping responses in individuals with and without TFA. Seventeen individuals with TFA and seventeen healthy controls experienced lateral perturbations applied at the waist using a custom system. Step thresholds, stepping strategies, step latency, and center of pressure (CoP) metrics were compared for perturbation

Effect of tau burden and Lewy pathology on neuropsychiatric symptoms in Aβ-positive individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common across the Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum. We aimed to evaluate the effects of amyloid beta (Aβ), tau, and Lewy body (LB) pathologies on NPS in Aβ-positive individuals. METHODS: In 336 Aβ-positive participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort, spanning from cognitively unimpaired to those with early dementia, NPS were assessed. Aβ and tau positron emission tomography were conducted. In a subgroup of 238 participants, dichotomized LB pathology was assessed by detecting α-synuclein seeding activity. The effec

Individualized machine-learning predictions of pain intensity in chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) imposes a major public health burden and its presentation is further complicated by high comorbidity with depression. Processes that maintain cLBP are likely highly individualized and span biological, psychological, and social domains, posing significant challenges for optimal treatment. This proof-of-concept study applied a systematic individualized machine learning (ML) pipeline to predict individual pain intensity from intervenable biopsychosocial variables obtained from ecological momentary assessment and smartwatch wearables. Participants were six adults with

Experiences who are d/Deaf and queer individuals: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

The current systematic review and meta-synthesis investigated the experiences of Deaf queer people, specifically, how identities in this population shift dynamically in response to their dual marginalization. Data were extracted from 27 qualitative studies, with a sample total of 176 participants. Synthesis was influenced by the Model of Multidimensional Identities to frame resulting categories and themes. Four categories were developed from the data: (1) institutional contributors to identity salience, (2) cultural moderators of institutional neglect, (3) resistance to double exclusion throug

Predictive accuracy of gait speed for falls: An individual participant data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gait speed is included in the World Falls Guidelines (WFG) fall risk algorithm, yet its ability to discriminate fallers from non-fallers remains unclear. This individual participant data meta-analysis examined the discriminative ability of the WFG-recommended cut point (<0.8 m/s) and the performance of a higher cut point (<1.0 m/s) for predicting falls in community-dwelling older adults and clinical populations at elevated risk of falls. METHODS: Individual data from 28 studies with a quantitative measure of gait speed and at least three months of prospectively reported falls were

Allocating a scarce medical resource: liver transplant and lay individuals' patient prioritisation.

BACKGROUND: There is much debate on how scarce medical resources such as transplant organs should be allocated: in the UK, the NHS uses the principles of sickest first, prognosis and waiting list time - but not age [1]. Furthermore, it has recently been reported that in the UK younger patients tend to wait much longer than older patients for a liver transplant. The current study investigates younger and older lay people's preferences for the allocation of liver transplants using four criteria, the patient's age, time spent on the waiting list, pre-transplant life expectancy and post-transplant

Myofascial Release Techniques as an Adjunct Treatment in Individuals With Frozen Shoulder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Frozen shoulder is characterized by pain and progressive restriction of shoulder range of motion (ROM), leading to functional limitations. Myofascial release (MFR) techniques are commonly used in clinical practice, mainly as an adjunct to conventional physiotherapy, yet their effectiveness in frozen shoulder remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of MFR, primarily as an adjunct intervention, on pain, functional disability, and shoulder ROM in individuals with frozen shoulder. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect

Predicting individual differences in digital alcohol intervention effectiveness through multimodal data.

Digital interventions can change behaviors like alcohol use, but effectiveness varies widely across individuals. Accurately identifying non-responders-i.e., those least (vs. most) likely to change their behavior-before intervention delivery is difficult. Individual intervention effectiveness predictions from prior studies perform only slightly above chance (e.g., AUC ≈0.60; balanced accuracy ≈0.60). We present a novel approach integrating multimodal data across theory-driven domains-including psychological assessments, social network data, and neural responses to alcohol cues-to make ex-ante p
