"Look, I'm fit, I'm positive and I'll be all right, thank you very much": coping with hepatitis C treatment and unrealistic optimism.

Hepatitis C treatment is known to produce significant physical and psychiatric side-effects. Healthcare workers in hepatitis C treatment clinics focus on preparing people to cope with these side-effects. Unrealistic optimism, or judging oneself to be at low risk of negative events, has been implicated in contributing to practices that place health at risk and to delays in seeking help or facilitating coping with negative events. In the context of hepatitis C treatment, patients with overly optimistic expectations of their ability to cope with treatment-related side-effects are less prepared fo

Adaptive mentalization-based integrative therapy for severe personality disorder and mental illness: study protocol for a controlled longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Personality Disorders that meet the criteria for a Severe Mental Illness (SMI-PD) tend to coincide with a greatly reduced quality of life and a lower life expectancy. Despite the numerous and complex needs of patients with SMI-PD, effective treatments for this group have not yet been established. Traditional treatments often fail to address the multitude of problems patients with SMI-PD struggle with and there is limited understanding about the treatment needs and effects. SMI-PD is associated with high economic costs to both the individual and society. Adaptive Mentalization-based

Misclassification and characterization of exposure to humidifier disinfectants using a questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Lung disease caused by exposure to chemical substances such as polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) used in humidifier disinfectants (HDs) has been identified in Korea. Several researchers reported that exposure classification using a questionnaire might not correlate with the clinical severity classes determined through clinical diagnosis. It was asserted that the lack of correlation was due to misclassification in the exposure assessment due to recall bias. We identified the cause of uncertainty to recognize the limitations of differences between exposure assessment and clinical ou

Epidemiology of panic disorder and subthreshold panic symptoms in the Greek general population.

Panic disorder (PD) is a common anxiety disorder with severe social and health consequences in the lives of individuals who suffer from it. General population studies that attempt to measure the prevalence of this disorder across the world suggest that a 1.7% to 4.7 % of adults and adolescents suffer from Panic Disorder. In Greece, research analyzing the abovementioned matters is limited, and previous studies were put forward in small samples. The aim of the present study was to describe the prevalence and sociodemographic associations of panic disorder (PD) and related subthreshold panic symp

[Clinical presentation and requests for support of people with HIV/AIDS seeking counselling and psychotherapy in Greece].

Despite the large progress during the last decades in the medical treatment of HIV/AIDS infection, people living with HIV nevertheless face multiple adversities at various levels of their lives. Mental disorders, in particular, are the most common comorbidities in HIV infection with negative consequences in adherence to antiretroviral medication, disease progress and overall quality of life. HIVrelated stigma, still quite intense in Greece, is one of the most debilitating factors concerning people's living with HIV mental health. The present study looked at the clinical presentation at intake

DNA-testing for BRCA1/2 prior to genetic counselling in patients with breast cancer: design of an intervention study, DNA-direct.

BACKGROUND: Current practice for patients with breast cancer referred for genetic counseling, includes face-to-face consultations with a genetic counselor prior to and following DNA-testing. This is based on guidelines regarding Huntington's disease in anticipation of high psychosocial impact of DNA-testing for mutations in BRCA1/2 genes. The initial consultation covers generic information regarding hereditary breast cancer and the (im)possibilities of DNA-testing, prior to such testing. Patients with breast cancer may see this information as irrelevant or unnecessary because individual geneti

Smoking and mental illness: results from population surveys in Australia and the United States.

BACKGROUND: Smoking has been associated with a range of mental disorders including schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and depression. People with mental illness have high rates of morbidity and mortality from smoking related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases and cancer. As many people who meet diagnostic criteria for mental disorders do not seek treatment for these conditions, we sought to investigate the relationship between mental illness and smoking in recent population-wide surveys. METHODS: Survey data from the US National Comorbidity Survey-Replication conduct

Detecting depressive and anxiety disorders in distressed patients in primary care; comparative diagnostic accuracy of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders often go unrecognized in distressed primary care patients, despite the overtly psychosocial nature of their demand for help. This is especially problematic in more severe disorders needing specific treatment (e.g. antidepressant pharmacotherapy or specialized cognitive behavioural therapy). The use of a screening tool to detect (more severe) depressive and anxiety disorders may be useful not to overlook such disorders. We examined the accuracy with which the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

A Qualitative Evaluation of Nurses' Perceptions of De-Escalation and Resilience Training for Workplace Violence Prevention.

SIGNIFICANCE/BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a persistent threat to nurses' safety, well-being, and retention, particularly in acute care settings where patient acuity, time pressure, and emotionally charged interactions can heighten the risk of aggression. De-escalation training is increasingly recommended as a workplace violence prevention strategy, while resilience-oriented support may help nurses cope with the psychological consequences of exposure. However, less is known about how nurses experience these forms of training in routine acute care practice and what contextual factors influe
