OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint locking with extension lag.
METHODS: Between February 2009 and April 2014, 17 patients (17 fingers) with MCP joint locking with extension lag were treated. The patients included 4 males and 13 females, and the average age was 40.7 years (range, 20-72 years). The index finger was locked in 12 cases and the middle finger in 5 cases. All patients could not fully extend the MCP joint at about 30° flexion without flexion limitation of the interphalangeal joint. The range of motion (R

The objective was to determine the quantitative relationship between the condyle and disc position in the glenoid fossa between two different slices of the same temporomandibular joints (TMJs) with partial anterior disc displacement (DD). The study was conducted on 40 patients with DD of TMJs (mean age, 35.5 years). The clinical diagnosis of DD was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Joints from the patient groups were analyzed according to the laterality and depending on disc displacement (a total of 80 joints). Comparison was made between two different slices of 9 joints with partial DD…

We present a case of synovial chondromatosis affecting the interphalangeal joint where the disease did not clearly manifest itself on pre-operative radiographs. Although rare, surgeons should consider articular synovial chondromatosis as a differential for pain and stiffness in any joint, even those of the hand.

INTRODUCTION: Loose bodies within the joint because of any cause have the potential for continued growth.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 41-year-old man had suffered multiple recurrent dislocations of his left shoulder, accompanied with pain. His anterior apprehension and relocation tests were positive, but no other sign was noted on physical examination. On magnetic resonance imaging and at arthroscopy, two giant loose bodies were seen. They were in the axillary recess and were removed arthroscopically.
DISCUSSION: Most authors recommend surgical removal of the cartilaginous loose bodies to amelio

We report a case of multifocal avascular osteonecrosis (AVN) following steroid administration in a case of tuberculous encephalitis in a young patient. The risk of joint-related AVN as a side effect of adjunctive steroid therapy should be taken into consideration when evaluating the dosage and treatment duration in tuberculous encephalitis.

A 5-month-old intact male Basset Hound presented for evaluation of pain and crepitation during manipulation of the temporomandibular joint, worse on the right side. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head was performed. The CT images demonstrated the osseous features of temporomandibular joint dysplasia and facilitated a 3D reconstruction, which allowed better visualization of the dysplastic features. The patient responded to conservative management with a tape muzzle with no recurrence reported by the owner 6 months after presentation.

This article aims to discuss the possible relationship between rapid extension-flexion of the neck-whiplash injury and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Clinical experience and studies revealed that whiplash injury may cause TMD. The pathophysiology of TMD is described as well as clinical and imaging diagnostic criteria. The treatment modalities for TMD are: physiotherapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and occlusal splints.

Joint angles were determined from anatomical markers placed on the forelimb and hind limb joints, and at six points along the vertebral column. As fence height increased, flexion of the scapulohumeral joint increased significantly for both the take-off and bascule (arc) phases of the jump. The increase in flexion as a consequence of the increas …

Traditionally, the lateral premotor cortex (PM) is assigned a role in stimulus-driven rather than memory-driven motor control, whereas the opposite holds for the mesial premotor cortex (supplementary motor area, SMA). Consistently, patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), in which a specific functional degradation of the mesial loop (i.e., SMA-Striatum) occurs, show impaired memory-driven but relatively preserved stimulus-driven motor control. However, both parts of the premotor cortex are involved in perceptual prediction tasks as well. Here we tested whether the functional bias described on t

Distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ) instability is increasingly recognised and assessment can be subjective and difficult. Previous research has used cadaveric models or in-vivo with CT, with variable results. A test device was designed to establish normal values of in-vivo DRUJ dorso-palmar translation. Twenty volunteers were recruited. Those with previous wrist/forearm injuries were excluded. The device held the elbow at 90° flexion and neutral forearm rotation, with the distal ulna secured. A dorso-palmar shear force was applied to the distal radius and displacement measured three times on each

Arthroscopic fracture management of the ankle and calcaneus requires a differentiated approach. The aim is to minimize surgical soft tissue damage and to visualize anatomical fracture reduction arthroscopically. Moreover, additional cartilage damage can be detected and treated. The arthroscopic approach is limited by deep impressions of the joint surface needing cancellous bone grafting, by multiple fracture lines on the articular side and by high-grade soft tissue damage. An alternative to the minimally invasive arthroscopic approach is open arthroscopic reduction in conventional osteosynthes

HYPOTHESIS: In this study, we aim to test whether scapular winging results in a significant change in glenohumeral translation in the initial phase of the throwing motion.
METHODS: Six shoulders underwent an abbreviated throwing motion (ATM) from late cocking to the end of acceleration by use of a validated robotic system. The intact specimens were tested to establish a baseline. The position of the scapula was then affected to simulate scapular winging by placing a cylindrical wedge under the inferior angle of the scapula, and the ATM was performed again. For both conditions, the average gle

Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injuries represent a common injury to the shoulder girdle. In the management algorithm of acute ACJ injuries complete radiological evaluation represents the key to a successful therapy. According to the classification of Rockwood the presence of a horizontal component in addition to vertical instability has to be detected. Using axillary functional views or Alexander views dynamic horizontal ACJ instability can be diagnosed in a simple, efficient and cost-effective manner reducing the number of mis-/underdiagnosed ACJ injuries. MRI should not be the imaging modali

Infection is a common sequela of open dislocation of the shoulder joint. This typically leads to joint surface and humeral head necrosis, resulting in severe limitation of motion. Few cases of open and infected glenohumeral joints have been reported, and none had a good functional outcome with pain-free, near-full range of motion. Here we report the case of a 24-year-old man, who sustained a severe degloving injury of his left shoulder with an open glenohumeral joint, in a road traffic accident. We describe a treatment plan that salvaged near-full range of shoulder motion and resulted in pain-…
