SARS-CoV-2 and dengue virus co-infection: Epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and management.

SARS-CoV-2 and dengue virus co-infection cases have been on the rise in dengue-endemic regions as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads over the world, posing a threat of a co-epidemic. The risk of comorbidity in co-infection cases is greater than that of a single viral infection, which is a cause of concern. Although the pathophysiologies of the two infections are different, the viruses have comparable effects within the body, resulting in identical clinical symptoms in the case of co-infection, which adds to the complexity. Overlapping symptoms and laboratory features make proper diffe

"Hiding in Plain Sight": A Retrospective Clinical and Microbiological Review of Vancomycin-Dependent Enterococci at a Tertiary Care Centre-A Case Report.

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) are established nosocomial pathogens; however, vancomycin-dependent Enterococci (VDE) represent a rare and underrecognized phenomenon. These organisms paradoxically require vancomycin for growth due to mutations in cell wall precursor synthesis. Limited awareness and significant diagnostic challenges associated with VDE can lead to delayed recognition and treatment failure. We report a case of vancomycin-dependent Enterococcus faecium isolated from a liver transplant recipient receiving oral vancomycin prophylaxis for recurrent Clostridioides difficile in

Simulation of pooling optimization methods for differing infection dynamics, sampling practices, and desired outcomes in surveillance testing.

The reliability of assumptions made about prevalence for pooling optimization varies greatly among target pathogens and surveillance strategies. When prevalence is unknown and difficult to anticipate, surveillance programs risk generating additional costs if pooling is suboptimal. Different methods of approximating optimal pool size (OPS) vary in precision of optimization, required sampling information, and the logistical demands placed on a laboratory workflow. Hence, it can be unclear how to assess compatibility between pooling optimization methods and the priorities of a surveillance progra

Rare Naegleria fowleri meningoencephalitis diagnosed via combined molecular biology and metagenomic sequencing techniques: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Naegleria fowleri, a pathogenic free-living amoeba, causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare but devastating disease with acute onset, rapid progression, and > 95% mortality. Despite its rarity, the catastrophic outcomes associated with this infection underscore the critical importance of prevention. In this report, we present a rare pediatric fatality caused by PAM in China, highlighting the challenges of diagnosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old child from Lushan County, Henan Province, developed persistent high fever, headache, vomiting, and alter

Pulmonary embolism in patients in acute COVID-19, long-COVID and post-COVID syndrome.

COVID-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which, after entering a living organism, uses the ACE-2 protein as a receptor and several other proteins as cofactors of infection. Disease symptomatology is extensive, involving mostly predominant respiratory symptoms, as well as those of the nervous, gastrointestinal, circulatory and other systems. Incidence of COVID-19 also results in markedly different laboratory findings on the hemostatic system with the predominant feature of increased D-dimer levels. In the pathogenesis of thromboembolic complications in COVID-19, all elements of Vir

Lactate-Based Scoring System in the Diagnosis of Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and quickly progressing infection and leads to 100% mortality if untreated. Quick diagnosis and an early and radical surgical treatment are essential for stopping bacterial progression. Unfortunately, the absence of clear clinical signs makes the diagnosis often challenging. Therefore, we searched for easy determinable predictive laboratory markers for NF. This is the first study which includes lactate values in a new score. A retrospective analysis of patients with NF (n = 44) and patients with erysipelas (n = 150) was performed. Lactate values, patients'

Impact of T-Cell Xtend on T-SPOT.TB Assay in High-Risk Individuals after Delayed Blood Sample Processing.

T-SPOT.TB (T-SPOT) is an interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) used to detect infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis based on the number of spot-forming T cells; however, delays in sample processing have been shown to reduce the number of these spots that are detected following laboratory processing. Adding T-Cell Xtend (XT) into blood samples before processing reportedly extends the amount of time allowed between blood collection and processing up to 32 h. In this study, paired blood samples from 306 adolescents and adults at high risk for latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) or progr
