Embedding Social-Emotional Learning in Elementary School-Based Speech-Language Therapy: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Many students with communication disorders have unique social-emotional needs, yet school speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are not typically trained in how to address those needs. We developed a new training (STIRS [SLP Training to Increase Resilience in Students]) to equip elementary school SLPs to embed social-emotional learning (SEL) practices within their routine speech-language sessions with K-3 students with communication disorders. The primary objective of this pilot trial was to evaluate the preliminary effects and feasibility of STIRS. METHOD: This was a single-blind, par

Understanding hepatitis C virus (HCV) health literacy and educational needs among people in prison to enhance HCV care in prisons.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a significant concern within prison populations. Provision of HCV testing and treatment for people in prison is expanding and a key component of global elimination efforts. Despite growing service availability, several challenges remain in HCV testing and treatment engagement during incarceration. The PIVOT study demonstrated that a 'one-stop-shop' intervention (point-of-care HCV RNA testing, Fibroscan®, nurse-led clinical assessment, and fast-tracked direct-acting antiviral prescription) enhanced HCV testing and treatment at a reception prison in Austral

Determinants of access of frail, community-residing older adults to geriatricians in Ontario.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about determinants of access to community-based geriatricians. The Geriatric 5Ms™ describe geriatricians' core competencies and inform referrals to specialists for older adults with complex needs. We explored the association of the Geriatric 5Ms™ and other characteristics with outpatient access to geriatricians by home care (HC) clients. METHODS: This was a population-based, retrospective cohort study of frail community-dwelling HC clients (≥60 years) with complex needs (n = 196,444). Health assessment information was linked to health services data in Ontario, Cana

Real-life and real-time hearing aid experiences: Insights from self-initiated ecological momentary assessments and natural language analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Smartphone technology can provide an effective means to bring real-life and (near-)real-time feedback from hearing aid wearers into the clinic. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) encourages listeners to report on their experiences during or shortly after they take place in order to minimize recall bias, e.g., guided by surveys in a mobile application. Allowing listeners to describe experiences in their own words, further, ensures that answers are independent of predefined jargon or of how survey questions are formulated. Through these means, one can obtain ecologically valid s

A human rights assessment of menopausal women's access to age- and gender-sensitive nondiscriminatory health care in prison.

IMPORTANCE AND OBJECTIVE: Women represent about 6% of the global prison population of 11 million. The female prison population has increased significantly in the past decade. Where attention is devoted to women's unique sexual and reproductive health needs in prison, this is largely focused on menstruation management and ante/postnatal care. There is no explicit guidance regarding imprisoned menopausal women's health care in the United Nations normative standards of detention (Mandela Rules, Bangkok Rules). A human rights assessment of menopausal women's access to age- and gender-sensitive non

[Applying Swanson's Caring Theory to a Patient With an Initial Diagnosis of Marfan's Syndrome With Aortic Dissection].

This article describes the author's experience using Swanson Care Theory in the provision of nursing care to a 20-year-old man, an exchange student from Hong Kong, following his initial diagnosis with Marfan's syndrome. This patient required emergency aortic root replacement surgery due to type A aortic dissection. Immediately after learning of his illness, the patient was faced with making a major surgical decision. The absence of relatives and friends close by to assist him made him unable to decide whether to agree to the operation. Because of the importance of evaluating the physical and m

"We want to be heard": Perspectives on mental health care among patients at a federally qualified health center.

CONTEXT: Depression is a debilitating condition associated with significant medical, social, and economic costs for individuals and communities. Despite its widespread prevalence, depression is typically under-identified and under-treated, particularly for people of color and lower socioeconomic status. Primary care settings such as federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) offer an ideal opportunity to rectify this gap for underserved communities. OBJECTIVE: From 2020-2021, we conducted a phone-based, qualitative assessment to understand what factors hindered and helped patients diagnosed w

Common elements of service delivery models that optimise quality of life and health service use among older people with advanced progressive conditions: a tertiary systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Health and social care services worldwide need to support ageing populations to live well with advanced progressive conditions while adapting to functional decline and finitude. We aimed to identify and map common elements of effective geriatric and palliative care services and consider their scalability and generalisability to high, middle and low-income countries. METHODS: Tertiary systematic review (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CINAHL, Embase, January 2000-October 2019) of studies in geriatric or palliative care that demonstrated improved quality of life and/or he

Using a human-centred design approach to develop a comprehensive newborn monitoring chart for inpatient care in Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Job aids such as observation charts are commonly used to record inpatient nursing observations. For sick newborns, it is important to provide critical information, intervene, and tailor treatment to improve health outcomes, as countries work towards reducing neonatal mortality. However, inpatient vital sign readings are often poorly documented and little attention has been paid to the process of chart design as a method of improving care quality. Poorly designed charts do not meet user needs leading to increased mental effort, duplication, suboptimal documentation and fragmentati

Use of inhalational anaesthetic agents in paediatric and adult patients for status asthmaticus, status epilepticus and difficult sedation scenarios: a protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Inhaled volatile anaesthetics have a long tradition of use as hypnotic agents in operating rooms and are gaining traction as sedatives in intensive care units (ICUs). However, uptake is impeded by low familiarity with volatiles, unique equipment and education needs. Inhaled anaesthetics are often reserved in ICUs as therapies for refractory and life threatening status asthmaticus, status epilepticus, high and difficult sedation need scenarios given they possess unique pharmacological properties to manage these medical conditions while providing sedation to acutely ill patients.
