bcl-1 rearrangement. Frequency and clinical significance among B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

The authors investigated the structural organization of the bcl-1 locus, a putative oncogene associated with reciprocal chromosomal translocation t(11;14), by Southern blot hybridization analysis and its frequency, distribution, and prognostic significance in a panel of 156 clinically and pathologically well-defined B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias (CLLs) and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs). The authors detected bcl-1 rearrangements in only 2 of 42 CLLs and 4 of 114 NHLs, specifically 3 of 29 diffuse small lymphocytic and 1 of 10 diffuse small cleaved cell and none of 5 diffuse intermediate

Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors: Evolving Standards of Care-Optimizing Resection, Staging Accuracy, and Recurrence Reduction.

Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) remains the foundation of nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) diagnosis and treatment. The article covers preop evaluation (history, imaging, vesical imaging-reporting and data system, multiparametric MRI, office cystoscopy, and biomarkers), anesthesia/energy choices to limit obturator reflex/perforation, and operative technique using enhanced cystoscopy and selective en bloc resection (EBRT). It stresses meticulous specimen handling, immediate use of intravesical chemotherapy, and indications for second-look TURBT. Despite progress, incom

Cancer staging data collection using rules-based natural language processing for entity extraction from pathology notifications: the WA cancer staging project.

BACKGROUND: Cancer staging data is vital for treatment planning, outcome prediction, clinical research, and healthcare resource allocation. Collection at the population level can improve insights, however existing manual methods are resource intensive. This study aimed to develop rules-based natural language processing (NLP) systems to: (1) extract explicit tumour, node, and metastasis (TNM) entities from data reported to the Western Australian Cancer Registry; (2) extract implicit entities translatable to individual TNM values; and (3) translate these values into cancer stages for melanoma, b

Global variation in patterns of care and time to initial treatment for breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer from 2015 to 2018 (VENUSCANCER): a secondary analysis of individual records for 275 792 women from 103 population-based cancer registries in 39 countries and territories.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the breast, cervix, and ovary are a major public health problem worldwide. Evaluating the consistency with clinical guidelines for treatment by use of individual high-resolution data from population-based cancer registries is a powerful tool to help interpretation of global inequalities in cancer survival. The VENUSCANCER project aims to assess the worldwide variation in patterns of care and time to initial treatment for women diagnosed with one of these three common cancers. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of anonymised individual records from population-based canc

Perineural Invasion for Risk Stratification in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic perineural invasion (mPNI) is a histopathological characteristic that can be found in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). In the eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), mPNI defined as the involvement of nerves ≥0.1 mm and nerves deeper than the dermis is included in risk stratification of cSCC. The question remains whether other mPNI features are important for optimal cSCC staging. We aimed to summarize the evidence from published studies on the independent association between various mPNI features and the risk of recurrence, metastasis a

Can MRI Accurately Diagnose and Stage Endometrial Adenocarcinoma?

Background and Objectives: Endometrial carcinoma is one of the most common gynecological cancers, and benign lesions such as endometrial hyperplasia, polyps, adenomyosis and leiomyomas should be included in the differential diagnosis. Magnetic resonance imaging has an important role in evaluating endometrial cancer and assessing the depth of myometrial invasion, and it closely correlates with the prognosis of the patient. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the MRI semiology of the endometrial carcinomas that mimic benign lesions, the main factors that may affect the correct diagnosis and

Diffuse pattern, orbital invasion, perineural invasion and Ki-67 are associated with nodal metastasis in patients with eyelid sebaceous carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Metastasis dominates the prognosis of eyelid sebaceous carcinoma (SC). This study aimed to explore risk factors for nodal metastasis and develop a nomogram to predict nodal metastasis in patients with eyelid SC. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was performed, comprising 320 patients with eyelid SC. Cox analyses were employed to investigate predictors of metastasis-free survival (MFS), and a nomogram was established and validated by the bootstrap method. RESULTS: Forty patients (12.5%) developed nodal metastasis during a median follow-up of 48.0 months, and the median p

Significance of platinum distribution to predict platinum resistance in ovarian cancer after platinum treatment in neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Most patients with ovarian cancer experience recurrence and develop resistance to platinum-based agents. The diagnosis of platinum resistance based on the platinum-free interval is not always accurate and timely in clinical settings. Herein, we used laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to visualize the platinum distribution in the ovarian cancer tissues at the time of interval debulking surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in 27patients with advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer. Two distinct patterns of platinum distribution were observed. Type A (n = 16): platinu

Spontaneous regression of advanced-stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous regression is defined as the partial or complete disappearance of a malignant tumour proven by microscopic examination in the absence of any substantial treatment. This paper presents the case of an older woman whose advanced-stage tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma was noted to have spontaneously regressed at seven months. CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of dysphagia and odynophagia in September 2020. An exophytic tumour was seen on the right tonsil; this was diagnosed radiologically and histologically as a squamous cell carcinoma of t

Distal phalanx: an unusual site for a gastric adenocarcinoma metastasis.

Gastric adenocarcinoma typically metastasises to the liver, peritoneum and lung. Bone metastasises are less frequent and particularly uncommon in the distal extremities. This is an unusual case of metastatic disease in the distal phalanx mimicking the presentation of osteomyelitis. This case highlights the need to remain vigilant in patients with known cancer and to always be mindful of metastatic disease, even if the presentation is atypical.

CXCR4 as a prognostic biomarker in gastrointestinal cancer: a meta-analysis.

Background: CXCR4 is a member of the C-X-C chemokine receptor family, which is associated with multiple types of cancer. Although it has been widely reported, the prognostic value of CXCR4 expression in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer remains controversial. Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between CXCR4 and prognosis of patients with GI cancer. Subgroup analysis was also performed according to tumour subtypes and heterogeneity test. Results: A total of 24 studies including 3637 cases suggested that overexpression of CXCR4 is significantly associated with over
