Impact of Nutritional Assessment on the Clinical Outcomes of Patients with Non-albicans Candidemia: A Multicenter Study.

Several studies have demonstrated that malnutrition is a negative prognostic factor for clinical outcomes. However, there is limited evidenc … olled. The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) scores were used to determine the patients' nutritional status before the onset of candidemia. A total of 378 patients were enrolled; 43.4% developed septic shock and 57.1% had a high risk of malnutrition (MUST ≥ 2). The all-cause 28-day mortality rate was 40.7%. The Cox proportional hazards model revealed that …

Is home parenteral nutrition safe for cancer patients? Positive effects and potential catheter-related complications: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Total Parenteral Nutrition began to be applied frequently in the houses of patients starting from the 1990s and is stated in literature as Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN). The purpose of this review is to answer the question of whether or not HPN is safe for cancer patients. METHODS: Searches were conducted in Cochrane, CINAHL, PubMed, Springer, Google Scholar, and the Web of Science databases. RESULTS: The 1,949 articles were accessed in the total, and 20 articles have been included in the review. In the studies being evaluated, it can be determined that HPN has influenced the qual

[Functional recovery of the cardio-respiratory patient].

Heart failure (HF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and most chronic diseases are associated with mild to moderate chronic or recurrent inflammation. This inflammation contributes to malnutrition through different mechanisms: anorexia, decreased intake, alteration of metabolism with increased energy expenditure at rest and increased muscle catabolism. The decrease in lean mass has been included as a phenotypic criterion in the recently coined definition of malnutrition. In addition, a greater importance is given to the evaluation of the function, together with that of the morphol

Preventive lipid-based nutrient supplements given with complementary foods to infants and young children 6 to 23 months of age for health, nutrition, and developmental outcomes.

BACKGROUND: One nutritional intervention advocated to prevent malnutrition among children is lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS). LNS provide a range of vitamins and minerals, but unlike most other micronutrient supplements, LNS also provide energy, protein and essential fatty acids. Alternative recipes and formulations to LNS include fortified blended foods (FBF), which are foods fortified with vitamins and minerals, and micronutrient powders (MNP), which are a combination of vitamins and minerals, OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of preventive LNS given with complementary food

Impact of Nutrition on Cardiovascular Function.

The metabolic sources of energy for myocardial contractility include mainly free fatty acids (FFA) for 95%, and in lesser amounts for 5% from glucose and minimal contributions from other substrates such lactate, ketones, and amino acids. However, myocardial efficiency is influenced by metabolic condition, overload, and ischemia. During cardiac stress, cardiomyocytes increase glucose oxidation and reduce FFA oxidation. In patients with ischemic coronary disease and heart failure, the low oxygen availability limits myocardial reliance on FFA and glucose utilization must increase. Although glucos

Determinants of child wasting in Bhutan. Insights from nationally representative data.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the epidemiology of wasting and identify the main predictors of wasting, severe wasting and poor weight-for-height in children. DESIGN: We analysed a nationally representative sample of 2028 children (Multiple Indicator Survey, 2010). SETTING: Royal Kingdom of Bhutan. SUBJECTS: Children aged 0-23 months. RESULTS: Wasting prevalence was significantly higher among infants aged 0-11 months than among children aged 12-23 months (12·0 v. 6·7 %; P=0·004) and among boys than girls (11·0 v. 7·5 %; P=0·04). Children from the Western region had 63 % higher odds of being wa

Cancer-associated malnutrition, cachexia and sarcopenia: the skeleton in the hospital closet 40 years later.

An awareness of the importance of nutritional status in hospital settings began more than 40 years ago. Much has been learned since and has altered care. For the past 40 years several large studies have shown that cancer patients are amongst the most malnourished of all patient groups. Recently, the use of gold-standard methods of body composition assessment, including computed tomography, has facilitated the understanding of the true prevalence of cancer cachexia (CC). CC remains a devastating syndrome affecting 50-80 % of cancer patients and it is responsible for the death of at least 20 %. …

Nutrition in inflammatory bowel disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nutrition plays a significant role in the pathogenesis and treatment of the two major forms of inflammatory bowel disease: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In addition, patients with inflammatory bowel disease are often found to have nutrient deficiencies at the time of diagnosis, whereas others develop features of malnutrition over the course of their illness. Therefore, an understanding of the relationship between nutrients and inflammatory bowel disease is important if these patients are to receive optimal care. RECENT FINDINGS: Epidemiologic and basic research ha

Long-term effect of a plant-based diet on magnesium status during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To compare dietary magnesium intake and magnesium concentrations in serum, red blood cells (RBC) and urine during pregnancy of women habitually following a long-term plant-based diet and of women following an average Western (control) diet. DESIGN: Prospective study during pregnancy. SETTING: Giessen, Germany. SUBJECTS: Healthy pregnant women (n=108) in their 9-12th, 20-22nd and 36-38th gestational week habitually following a plant-based diet for more than 3 y or an average Western diet. The vegetarians were subdivided into ovo-lacto vegetarians (n=27) and low-meat eaters (n=43).

Advancing age and other factors influencing the balance between amino acid requirements and toxicity.

As the average human lifespan increases, so does the recognition that advancing age is associated with changes in nutrient intake and requirements as a consequence of biological, social, and pathological factors. Studies show that whereas protein requirements may not differ significantly between younger and older adults, the adaptive mechanisms and responses to nutritional or pathological stressors may differ and alter the balance between requirement and toxicity of specific amino acids (AAs). As an individual gets older, cardiovascular disease and cancer become the leading causes of morbidity

Pregnancy, nutrition and parasitic diseases.

In the developing world, young women, pregnant women, and their infants and children frequently experience a cycle where undernutrition (macronutrient and micronutrient) and repeated infection, including parasitic infections, lead to adverse consequences that can continue from one generation to the next. Among parasitic infections, malaria and intestinal helminths coexist widely with micronutrient deficiencies and contribute importantly to anemia and this cycle of retarded growth and development. In somewhat more limited or focal geographic settings, other parasitic diseases (e.g., schistosomi

Fractional intestinal absorption of magnesium is directly proportional to dietary magnesium intake in rats.

The precise mechanisms of intestinal Mg absorption are still unclear and the possibility of an adaptative rise in the fraction of Mg absorbed as Mg intake is lowered is controversial. Mg deficiency has been studied extensively in rats where it is readily produced by dietary depletion. In this study, we investigated the effect of Mg intake on fractional absorption of Mg acutely and after adaptation to graded Mg intake in rats. For this purpose, male Wistar rats (n = 30) were fed a basal semipurified diet containing 600 mg Mg/kg (MgO) for 7 d. Three groups of 10 rats were then formed and fed the

Interventions aimed at dietary and lifestyle changes to promote healthy aging.

Desirable dietary habits and other lifestyle practices reduce premature mortality and compress the period of morbidity experienced towards the end of life. Aging adults are at risk of nutritionally inadequate diets especially in relation to protein, vitamins D, B1, B6, B12, fluid and other food components. Interventions aimed at ensuring dietary adequacy also need to consider the social and cultural aspects of eating as food is fundamental to a person's well-being and quality of life. The nutrition-related health problems associated with aging such as frailty, depression, incontinence and chro
