Functional and Cosmetic Outcome after Reconstruction of Isolated, Unilateral Orbital Floor Fractures (Blow-Out Fractures) with and without the Support of 3D-Printed Orbital Anatomical Models.

The present study aimed to analyze if a preformed "hybrid" patient-specific orbital mesh provides a more accurate reconstruction of the orbital floor and a better functional outcome than a standardized, intraoperatively adapted titanium implant. Thirty patients who had undergone surgical reconstruction for isolated, unilateral orbital floor fractures between May 2016 and November 2018 were included in this study. Of these patients, 13 were treated conventionally by intraoperative adjustment of a standardized titanium mesh based on assessing the fracture's shape and extent. For the other 17 pat…

Restricted open-shell time-dependent density functional theory with perturbative spin-orbit coupling: Inclusion of spin-flip-down states.

Calculating electronically excited states for molecular systems with an electronic configuration that has two or more unpaired electrons remains a challenge in quantum chemistry. The electronically excited states are often hard to model due to the complex nature of the wave function. This especially holds true in the case of heavy-element systems, for which the treatment of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is crucial for a good description. To address this, we have modified the SOC-corrected restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham (ROKS) time-dependent density functional theory approach within the Tamm-Danco…

Evidence of spin-phonon-charge coupling and spin-orbit excitations in quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin chain systemα-CoV2O6.

The quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin chainα-CoV2O6exhibits intriguing low-temperature magnetic behavior. We report a comprehensive study of the magnetic and lattice properties of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin-chain compoundα-CoV2O6using x-ray diffraction, DC magnetization, specific heat, Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical charge density calculations. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-range order is observed atTN=15 K, with short-range magnetic correlations persisting below 100 K. The Co2+ions exhibit an effective spin-1/2 ground state due to crystal-field effects and strong spin-orbit coupl…

Harvesting the Spin-Orbit Interaction of Light to Generate Helicity-Dependent Complex Rotational Motion in Optically Trapped Mesoscopic Matter.

Spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of tightly focused light in optical tweezers underpins diverse optomechanical applications and the interconversion of spin and orbital angular momentum. Here, we demonstrate that the transfer of the spin angular momentum of a tightly focused circularly polarized beam to an on-axis birefringent particle can indirectly generate spin in an adjacent particle, leading to exotic rotational motion reminiscent of planetary trajectories. We demonstrate simultaneous rotation and revolution of birefringent liquid crystal (LC) particles by harvesting SOI, such that its two pri…

MnPdGe: a quasi-1D Kagome Weyl nodal ring semimetal for next-generation spin-orbit torque and magneto-optical applications.

The interplay between magnetism and topology has opened up promising avenues for spintronics and quantum technologies. Topological materials … ronic spectra, with their nontrivial topological nature confirmed by Berry phase calculations. Spin-orbit coupling induces finite BC, leading to sizable intrinsic anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst conductivities. Magneto-optical calculations further predict a polar Kerr rotation of about 1.2∘under normal incidence, demonstrating its potential for next …
