BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that exposure to severe interpersonal trauma (IPT) has a pivotal role in the development and manifestation of depression. However, it is not clearly understood whether patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have specifically increased prevalence of IPT than other non-interpersonal traumatic events and whether those with IPT have unique symptom profile within depressed groups. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of past traumatic events and symptomatic features of treatment-seeking outpatients with MDD.
METHODS: A consecutive sample of 111

A 61-year-old man consulted a nearby doctor with the chief complaint of lassitude in June 2010. Blood tests revealed a hemoglobin level of 3.7 g/dL. The observation of significant anemia resulted in a full medical workup. On computed tomography (CT) findings, a large mass (17 × 10 cm in diameter) was found in the abdominal region. The lumen was distended with accumulation of air and fluid. In addition, I continued with a bladder wall, but did not recognize the abnormality that was apparent to a bladder lumen. There was no evidence of ileus. A diagnosis of appendix cancer or sarcoma was made pr

MRSA causes a wide diversity of diseases, ranging from benign skin infections to life-threatening diseases, such as sepsis. However, there have been few reports of the pathophysiology and mechanisms of sepsis resulting from the gut-derived origin of MRSA. Therefore, we established a murine model of gut-derived sepsis with MRSA and factors of MRSA sepsis that cause deterioration. We separated mice into four groups according to antibiotic treatment as follows: (i) ABPC 40 mg/kg; (ii) CAZ 80 mg/kg; (iii) CAZ 80 mg/kg + endotoxin 10 microg/mouse; and (iv) saline-treated control groups. Gut-derived

Methods of conducting psychotherapy in the most severe forms of childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), especially in those traumas discovered very early in life, are rarely reported. This paper presents such a report and in the process emphasizes three elements of treatment: abreaction (full emotional expression of the traumatic experience), context (understanding and gaining perspective on the experience), and correction (finding ways personally or through society to prevent or repair such experiences). With traumatized children, all three elements may be inserted into their therapeu

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the experiences of patients with hard-to-heal (chronic) leg ulcers (LUs) whose lesions were treated with an inelastic, adjustable compression system (ACS). The specific goal was to evaluate the impact of an ACS on wound healing, patient quality of life (QoL) and self-management.
METHOD: In this prospective, single-centre observational study, patients who presented with either unilateral or bilateral hard-to-heal LUs received treatment with an ACS. The study included patients diagnosed with venous leg ulcers, ulcers of unknown origin or of mixed aetiolog

INTRODUCTION: Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome or Chronic Prostatitis (CPPS/CP) is the most prevalent urologic affliction among young adult men. It is a challenging condition to treat, which significantly decreases patient quality of life, mostly because of its still uncertain aetiology. In that regard, an autoimmune origin is a prominent supported theory. Indeed, studies in patients and in rodent models of Experimental Autoimmune Prostatitis (EAP) have provided compelling evidence suggesting a key role of CD4 Th1 cells in disease pathogenesis. However, the implication of other prominent effectors

The risks of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus nuisance and vector-borne diseases are rising and the adverse effects of broad-spectrum insecticide application have promoted species-specific techniques, such as sterile insect technique (SIT) and other genetic strategies, as contenders in their control operations. When specific vector suppression is proposed, potential effects on predators and wider ecosystem are some of the first stakeholder questions. These are not the only Aedes vectors of human diseases, but are those for which SIT and genetic strategies are of most interest. They vary ecol

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are an essential family of enzymes in the human body. They play a crucial role in metabolism, especially in human steroid biosynthesis. Reactions catalyzed by these enzymes are highly stereo- and regio-specific. Lack or severe malfunctions of CYPs can cause severe diseases and even shorten life. Hence, investigations on metabolic reactions and structural requirements of substrates are crucial to gain further knowledge on the relevance of different enzymes in the human body functions and the origin of diseases. One key enzyme in the biosynthesis of gluco- and mineralocor

INTRODUCTION: Dental calculus is a mineralized microbial dental plaque biofilm that forms throughout life by precipitation of salivary calcium salts. Successive cycles of dental plaque growth and calcification make it an unusually well-preserved, long-term record of host-microbial interaction in the archaeological record. Recent studies have confirmed the survival of authentic ancient DNA and proteins within historic and prehistoric dental calculus, making it a promising substrate for investigating oral microbiome evolution via direct measurement and comparison of modern and ancient specimens.

Globally, 3.1 billion people live in areas endemic for malaria (the tropics and subtropics). Annually, around 200 million fall ill, and around 500,000 persons die as a result of this infection. Mainly children are the victims. In order to control and eventually prevent any new infection, the development of effective vaccines is pivotal. In this review, background information about the history of vaccine development and malaria disease as well as possibilities for therapy and control is given. In the main part of the article, an update on the development of vaccines against Plasmodium falciparu

OBJECTIVE: To explore the ways in which stigma is experienced in healthcare and dental settings by patients with a history of addiction and mental illness.
METHODS: Audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews with a purposefully selected convenience sample of residents from two community treatment centres in Vancouver, Canada were conducted. The interview guide contained questions about experiences while seeking health and dental care and was based on an existing framework of labeling, stereotyping, exclusion, discrimination, and power imbalance. Interviews were transcribed verbatim for coding

The need to prevent low birthweight (LBW) defined as a birthweight ≤2,500 g is presently well recognized, not only because of the immediate consequences increasing the risk of neonatal death and burden of disease but also in terms of the impact of being LBW on lifelong health and well-being. Children are born LBW (<2,500 g) either because they were born too early (true preterm LBW infants) or alternatively they failed to grow adequately despite a normal duration of gestation (intrauterine growth retardation IUGR). In this later case, the weight may be over 2,500 g, but the infant is lighter th

We report on a patient with a contiguous interstitial germline deletion of chromosome 10q23, encompassing BMPR1A and PTEN, with clinical manifestations of juvenile polyposis and minor symptoms of Cowden syndrome (CS) and Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome (BRRS). The patient presented dysmorphic features as well as developmental delay at the age of 5 months. Multiple polyps along all parts of the colon were diagnosed at the age of 3 years, following an episode of a severe abdominal pain and intestinal bleeding. The high-resolution comparative genomic hybridisation revealed a 3.7-Mb deletion wit

INTRODUCTION: A non-recurrent variant of the inferior laryngeal nerve has been seldom reported. These reports are mostly based on cadaveric dissection studies or large chart review studies in which the emphasis is placed on the determination of the frequency of the variation, and not on the clinical appearance of this variant. We graphically describe the intraoperative identification of a non-recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve.

This study was undertaken to investigate the possible origin of some cutaneously recorded higher frequency electrogastrographic signals. Computer modeling of gastric electrical uncoupling was performed using previously described conoidal dipole model. Cutaneous electrogastrograms were simulated after uncoupling was introduced. In separate, real-life experiments, 6 pairs of bipolar electrodes were inserted into the gastric wall (3 anterior, 3 posterior) of 15 anesthetized dogs at laparotomy to record 6 channels of internal gastric electrical activity (GEA). Eight-channel bipolar cutaneous elect

Since 1988, WHO has been collecting standardized information on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in adult communities worldwide. Within the age range 30-64 years, diabetes and IGT were found to be absent or rare in some traditional communities in Melanesia, East Africa and South America. In communities of European origin, the prevalences of diabetes and IGT were in the range of 3-10% and 3-15% respectively, but migrant Indian, Chinese and Hispanic American groups were at higher risk (15-20%). The highest risk was found in the Pima Indians of Arizona and

The oxytocin-neurophysin gene is expressed in several nontraditional sites within the endocrine system. In the ovary its expression in the corpora lutea is initiated by ovulation. Ovarian oxytocin concentrations reach maximal levels around day 11 of luteal cycle and fall to a nadir at estrus. PGF2 alpha has the capacity to release oxytocin from the corpus luteum, and oxytocin in turn releases PGF2 alpha from the uterine endometrium or decidua. This positive feedback loop between the ovary and the uterus ensures the completion of luteolysis in species that depend on the presence of the uterus f

Edematous fibrosclerotic panniculopathy (EFP) affects ∼80% to 98% of postpubertal women and has a significant impact on quality of life. Its unclear etiopathology and the multifactorial origin pose a significant challenge for its clinical management. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of a commercially available mixture of hyaluronic acid and amino acids in an alkaline solution. A prospective multicenter clinical trial was carried out on 46 women with EFP Stage I to early Stage IV. The improvement of cellulite severity was evaluated by the modified Clinician-Reported Phot

Primary mediastinal nonseminomatous germ cell tumor (PMNSGCT) stands out among other germ cell tumors not only because of its mediastinal site of origin, but by its aggressive behavior, need for maximal multidisciplinary therapy, and relatively poor prognosis. We present a case of a 22-year-old man who was evaluated for chest-related and systemic symptoms and found to have a large mediastinal mass compressing the pulmonary artery with no apparent disease outside the mediastinum. Physical exam at presentation to medical oncology revealed gynecomastia and small testicles, suspicious for sex horm

In humans, the first 1000 days of life are pivotal for brain and organism development. Shortly after birth, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in the hypothalamus are activated, a phenomenon known as minipuberty. This phenomenon, observed in all mammals studied, influences the postnatal development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and reproductive function. This review will put into perspective the results of recent studies showing that the impact of minipuberty extends beyond reproductive function, influencing sensory and cognitive maturation. Studies in mice have r
