Obesity as a tumour development triggering factor.

BACKGROUND: Americans increasingly use cannabis, including those with psychiatric disorders. Yet little is known about cannabis use among individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thus, we conducted the first survey of cannabis users with OCD. METHODS: Adults with OCD (i.e., prior professional diagnosis and/or score above the cutoff on a validated scale) who reported using cannabis were recruited from internet sources to complete a survey querying demographic information, medical/psychiatric history, cannabis use patterns, and perceived cannabis effects. RESULTS: Of 1096 survey c

Food insecurity as a driver of obesity in humans: The insurance hypothesis.

Integrative explanations of why obesity is more prevalent in some sectors of the human population than others are lacking. Here, we outline and evaluate one candidate explanation, the insurance hypothesis (IH). The IH is rooted in adaptive evolutionary thinking: The function of storing fat is to provide a buffer against shortfall in the food supply. Thus, individuals should store more fat when they receive cues that access to food is uncertain. Applied to humans, this implies that an important proximate driver of obesity should be food insecurity rather than food abundance per se. We integrate

[Influence of body weight on the prognosis of breast cancer survivors; nutritional approach after diagnosis].

Obesity combined with breast cancer is a public health problem, given the high incidence and prevalence of both diseases. The aim of this review is to determine the current status of research on the relationship between the body weight of breast cancer patients and their prognosis. Overweight and obesity at the time of diagnosis are associated with a worse prognosis in breast cancer survivors. Observational studies show that breast cancer mortality is 33% higher in obese than in non-obese survivors. Furthermore, weight gain after diagnosis is common in these patients and is even greater in tho…

Very low energy ketogenic diet vs. Mediterranean diet for MASLD: Superior steatosis reduction in a randomised pilot study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Weight loss is the cornerstone of treatment for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This pilot study compared the efficacy and safety of a ketogenic very low energy diet (VLED) vs. a Mediterranean diet (MD) in improving hepatic steatosis and liver histology in individuals with overweight or obesity and MASLD. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial in adults with histologically confirmed MASLD and a BMI of 27-35 kg/m2. Participants were assigned to either a 12-week VLED (3,151 kJ/day) or MD program (8,950 kJ/day) and monitored…

Vegetarianism and cardiometabolic disease risk factors: Differences between South Asian and US adults.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiometabolic diseases are increasing disproportionately in South Asia compared with other regions of the world despite high levels of vegetarianism. This unexpected discordance may be explained by differences in the healthfulness of vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets in South Asia compared with the United States. The aim of this study was to compare the food group intake of vegetarians with non-vegetarians in South Asia and the United States and to evaluate associations between vegetarianism and cardiometabolic disease risk factors (overweight/obesity, central obesity, diabetes…

The Impact of Body Mass Index on Quantitative 24-h Urine Chemistries in Pediatric Urolithiasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hangman's fractures are bilateral fractures of the C2 pars interarticularis produced during hyperextension injuries. The Levine-Edwards classification divides these fractures into 4 categories determined by injury stability. While stable fracture patterns are typically managed conservatively, prolonged traction required in unstable fractures may be superseded by surgery in its practicality. Surgical approaches can be divided into anterior and posterior: the anterior approach allows access to the disc and is used for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF); the posterior appr

Weight and disordered eating among adolescents from low-income backgrounds.

Disordered eating affects youth from varying socioeconomic backgrounds; however, representation of youth from low-income backgrounds within disordered eating research has been limited. The aim of the current study was to examine the association between adolescent weight and disordered eating among a sample of youth from a low-income background and to examine specific socioenvironmental factors that might moderate this association. Adolescents ages 12-17 (N = 73) from a low-income background and their parents/guardians completed self-report questionnaires. Adolescent height and weight were obje

The systematic development of guidance for parents on talking to children of primary school age about weight.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in children is increasing, alongside increases in rates of children's anxiety and worry about their weight. In many countries children's weight is measured, and parents are made aware if a child has been classified as having overweight or obesity. However, many parents are concerned that raising their child's awareness of their weight, and talking to children about their weight could harm their wellbeing. The aim of this project was to develop guidance for parents on constructive ways to talk to children of primary school age about weight wh…
