A patients' view of OA: the Global Osteoarthritis Patient Perception Survey (GOAPPS), a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, osteoarthritis (OA) is the third condition associated with disability. There is still poor treatment in OA but science holds the key to finding better treatments and a cure. It is essential to learn what's important to patients from them to implement the most effective OA management. The OA Patients Task Force, conducted the Global OA Patient Perception Survey (GOAPPS)-the first global survey made by patients to analize the quality of life (QoL) & patient perceptions of care. The goal was to collect data on OA patients' perception of OA to understand patients' needs and e

Metals and Particulates Exposure from a Mobile E-Waste Shredding Truck: A Pilot Study.

The US electronics recycling industry has introduced a novel mobile electronic waste (e-waste) shredding truck service to address increasing needs for secure data destruction of e-waste. These trucks can shred small electronics with data security concerns at remote locations for a wide variety of clients. Shredding jobs usually involve hand-feeding electronic waste (e-waste) for 4-10 h day-1, 1-5 days. Shredding of e-waste has been documented as a source of high metal exposures, especially lead and cadmium. However, no studies have been done to assess exposures on mobile e-waste shredding truc

Pilot study of the effectiveness of a Mindful Self-Care and Resiliency program for rural doctors in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: Rural doctors are difficult to recruit and retain. Burnout and stress in the medical workforce fluctuates according to location. Overall, doctors have an elevated risk of depression and suicide compared to the general population and other professionals. Higher levels of occupational stress also effect patient care, levels of work satisfaction and relationships with others. This study evaluated the effectiveness, acceptability, feasibility and sustainability of the Mindful Self-Care and Resiliency Program. DESIGN: This was a sequential mixed-method study involving the collection of

Development and evaluation of an adapted physical activity program in anorexia nervosa inpatients: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT: Problematic use of physical activity is frequent in subjects with anorexia nervosa (AN). Although it increases resistance to therapeutic treatment, paradoxically, physical activity in AN can also improve mental and physical health. Based on the literature review we hypothesized that adding an adapted physical activity (APA) program to treatment programs could be more beneficial than a total suppression of physical activities. We designed this open study to evaluate the outcome of AN inpatients after an APA program implementation as well as the perceived effect of APA.

Effects of auricular acupuncture on appetite in patients with advanced cancer: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Over half of patients with advanced cancer report appetite loss or anorexia. Previous studies have shown the benefit of acupuncture for cancer-related nausea and vomiting, but limited evidence exists for its role in appetite improvement. Our study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of auricular acupuncture to improve appetite for cancer patients with advanced disease. METHODS: We performed a two-arm parallel, pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of auricular acupuncture versus usual care control in patients with stage III or IV cancer who experienced appetite loss. Reconsolidation-based treatment for fear of public speaking: a systematic pilot study using propranolol.

Pharmacological manipulation of memory reconsolidation opens up promising new avenues for anxiety disorder treatment. However, few studies have directly investigated reconsolidation-based approaches in subclinical or clinical populations, leaving optimal means of fear memory reactivation unknown. We conducted a systematic pilot study to assess whether a reconsolidation-based treatment could tackle public speaking anxiety in a subclinical sample (N = 60). As lab studies indicate that the duration of reactivation may be important for inducing reconsolidation, we investigated several speech lengt

Blood RNA Integrity is a Direct and Simple Reporter of Radiation Exposure and Prognosis: A Pilot Study.

In the event of a mass casualty radiation scenario, rapid assessment of patients' health and triage is required for optimal resource utilization. Identifying the level and extent of exposure as well as prioritization of care is extremely challenging under such disaster conditions. Blood-based biomarkers, such as RNA integrity numbers (RIN), could help healthcare personnel quickly and efficiently determine the extent and effect of multiple injuries on patients' health. Evaluation of the effect of different radiation doses, alone or in combination with burn injury, on total RNA integrity over mu
