Machine learning integration of multi-modal radiomics and clinical factors predicts refracture risk after percutaneous kyphoplasty in postmenopausal women.

This study explores the use of radiomic features extracted from preoperative T2-weighted MRI and CT images, combined with machine learning models, to predict the risk of vertebral refracture after percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) in postmenopausal women. We retrospectively collect data from 156 postmenopausal women with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) who underwent PKP (35 refracture cases, 121 non-refracture controls). All patients had preoperative lumbar T2-weighted MRI and CT scans. We extract MRI and CT radiomic features and constructed radiomic signatures through featur

Impact of Body Adiposity (Lean and Fat Mass Distribution) on Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Indian Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Osteoporosis and obesity are prevalent health conditions that share overlapping risk factors and physiological consequences. After menopause, hormonal changes impact both bone strength and fat distribution. Although fat mass (FM) and lean mass (LM) are important components of body composition, their separate effects on bone mineral density (BMD) are not well understood, especially among Indians. Objective The main objective of this study is to assess how body adiposity, such as FM and LM, is related to BMD in postmenopausal Indian women. Methods A total of 36 postmenopausal women pa

Integrated metabolomics and gut microbiota analysis to explore the protective effects of Gushudan on postmenopausal osteoporosis rats via gut-bone axis.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) was caused by significant deviations in gut microbiota and metabolites. Gushudan (GSD), a small traditional Chinese medicine formula, exerted therapeutic effects including kidney-nourishing and bone-strengthening properties. The therapeutic mechanism of GSD in alleviating kidney-yang deficiency syndrome and secondary osteoporosis was systematically investigated through metabolomics and network pharmacology. However, the mechanisms and impact on gut microbiota through which GSD mitigated PMOP remained to be elucidated. In this study, fecal metabolomics was int

Early Postmenopausal Fragility Fractures and Elevated IgE: Two Cases Suggesting Hyper-IgE Syndrome and a Novel Adverse Reaction to Romosozumab.

Severe, treatment-refractory or early-onset osteoporosis should prompt evaluation for secondary causes. Hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder characterised by markedly elevated serum IgE, recurrent infections and skeletal anomalies, including osteoporosis and increased fracture burden. We present two cases of severe osteoporosis in early postmenopausal women. Both women exhibited markedly elevated IgE levels, raising the possibility of underlying HIES. Case 1, despite anabolic and anti-resorptive treatment, experienced multiple fragility fractures, with fracture

Prevalence, clinical characteristics, and biological markers of postmenopausal osteoporosis and knee osteoarthritis in Beijing: study protocol for a cross-sectional and prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) and knee osteoarthritis (KOA) are common musculoskeletal disorders that share risk factors such as aging, hormonal changes, and inflammation. PMOP often remains asymptomatic until fractures occur, while KOA leads to pain and disability. Their comorbidity remains underexplored, particularly in community settings. This study aims to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical features of PMOP-KOA comorbidity among Beijing residents aged 45-80 years, providing evidence-based recommendations for early identification, prevention, and managem

Naringin inhibits the osteoblast-osteoclast pyroptosis cascade reaction mediated by accumulated bone marrow adipose tissue in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Excessive expansion of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) is considered to be a crucial factor leading to postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). Conventional osteoporosis drugs mainly focus on inhibiting bone resorption, promoting bone formation or calcium absorption, with less emphasis on regulating BM adiposity. Potential therapeutic agents need to be screened. The objective of this study is to explore the potential mechanisms by which naringin (NG), abundant in citrus fruits, regulates lipid metabolism and exerts bone-protective activities. METHODS: Key pathways and molecular mecha

Effects of Combined Exercise and Calcium/Vitamin D Supplementation on Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) is a major cause of fragility fractures worldwide. While exercise and calcium/vitamin D are standard preventive measures, the synergistic effects of their combined use on bone mineral density (BMD) remain unclear. METHODS: We systematically searched eight databases through October 2025 and synthesized data using Review Manager version 5.4. Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were conducted to examine heterogeneity and test the robustness of results. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2.0 tool, and the certainty of evi

Sex differences between postmenopausal women and similar-age men in response to orthostatic stress following 2 wk of bed rest.

Reduced orthostatic tolerance is common following periods of bed rest that are associated with illness or surgery, putting individuals at higher risk for syncope and falls following hospitalization. Following menopause, mechanisms of female cardiovascular regulation change, which may be associated with sex-specific responses to orthostatic stress following bed rest. The purpose of our experiment was to investigate sex differences between healthy postmenopausal women and similar-age men (age: 55-65 yr) for their orthostatic tolerance and cerebrovascular responses to standing following bed rest.

Depressive symptoms and antidepressant use in relation to white blood cell count among postmenopausal women from the Women's Health Initiative.

Inflammation can play a role in the pathophysiology of depression, and specific types of antidepressants may have inflammatory or anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, depression and antidepressant use has been linked to white blood cell (WBC) count, a routinely measured inflammatory marker. We examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships of depressive symptoms and/or antidepressant use with WBC count among postmenopausal women. Analyses of cross-sectional data at enrollment were performed on 125,307 participants, 50-79 years of age, from the Women's Health Initiative Clini

Catgut embedding in acupoints combined with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis: study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: To date, the clinical modulation for bone metabolism based on the neuro-bone mass regulation theory is still not popular. The stimulation of nerve systems to explore novel treatments for Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is urgent and significant. Preliminary research results suggested that changes brain function and structure may play a crucial role in bone metabolism with PMOP. Thus, we set up a clinical trial to investigate the effect of the combination of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and catgut embedding in acupoints (CEA) for PMOP and to elucidate the c
