To study whether central dopaminergic activity influences TSH responsiveness to TRH in normal individuals and in patients with hyperthyroidism, three experiments (A, B and C) were carried out in 8 normal subjects, and two experiments (A and B) in 8 patients with untreated thyrotoxicosis. Exposure of adult male hamsters to short days (less than 12.5 light/day) leads to suppression of gonadal function which is secondary to reductions in gonadotropin and prolactin (PRL) secretion. Acute bromocriptine administration reduced sitting and standing blood pressure and produced severe orthostatic hypotension in 12 normal subjects. Concomitantly, there was an increase in venous distensibility and basal blood flow, and a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, as determined by forearm plethysmography. After administration of bromocriptine, plasma norepinephrine concentration decreased. Bromocriptine lowers blood pressure by dilating arterioles and veins, at least in part by means of dopaminergic inhibition of sympathetic nervous system activity.

We describe a patient with multiple endocrine adenomatosis Type I, characterized by pituitary-dependent Cushing's Syndrome, marked hyperprolactinaemia, primary hyperparathyroidism and hyperinsulinism leading to hypoglycaemia. The patient subsequently developed an exocrine pancreatic carcinoma at the age of 32 years from which she died. An additional finding was the demonstration by immunocytochemistry of nesidioblastosis in the pancreas.

A RIA for 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) in rat plasma has been developed. The assay employs an antiserum that is specific for catechol estrogens. Specificity is further ensured by purification of plasma extracts on Sephadex LH-20 columns before RIA. Blood was collected at 0 C in the presence of ascorbic acid to prevent oxidation. A total of 192 patients with benign fibrocystic disease of the breast were studied. Diagnosis was based on the clinical picture, xerography, and/or mammography. Hyperprolactinemia is common and mainly encountered in premenopausal women. The most prevalent causes are drugs (estrogens, neuroleptics), hypothalamic and pituitary disorders (functional abnormalities, intrasellar adenomas, suprasellar lesions) and hypothyroidism.
