The Optimal Regimen for the Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Injury Using Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound in Rats with Chronic Sleep Deprivation.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is an emerging physical therapy for the treatment of early temporomandibular joint injury and has a good effect on promoting cartilage and subchondral bone tissue repair. However, the best LIPUS intensity and treatment duration remain unclear. This study is aimed at observing the preventive and therapeutic effects of different modes of LIPUS and at identifying the optimal LIPUS treatment regimen for temporomandibular joint injury. In the present study, rat models of temporomandibular joint injury were established using a chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) m…

The additive efficacy of therapeutic low-intensity pulsed ultrasound in the treatment of vitiligo: A randomized, left-right comparison clinical trial.

Repigmentation of vitiligo relies on the proliferation and migration of melanoblasts from hair follicles to the epidermis to replenish epidermal melanin. Our previous study has demonstrated low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) can stimulate melanoblast migration in vitro. We sought to evaluate the potential additive efficacy and safety of LIPUS for repigmentation of vitiligo. Twenty-seven adult patients with stable generalized vitiligo on the face or trunk were recruited in this randomized, open, left-right comparison study. In each patient, two symmetric lesional sites were randomly select…

Pulsed Reduced Dose Rate Radiotherapy in Conjunction With Bevacizumab or Bevacizumab Alone in Recurrent High-grade Glioma: Survival Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Dismal prognosis and limited treatment options for recurrent high-grade glioma have provoked interest in various forms of reirradiation. Pulsed reduced dose rate radiation therapy (pRDR) is a promising technique that exploits low-dose hyper-radiosensitivity of proliferating tumor cells while sparing adjacent nonproliferating normal brain tissue. Large radiation treatment volumes can thus be used to target both contrast-enhancing and FLAIR abnormalities thought to harbor recurrent gross and microscopic disease, respectively. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine whether …

Production of high sensory quality Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) by pulsed air-impingement jet drying (AID) technique.

The effect of pulsed air-impingement jet drying (AID) on the sensory qualities of Shiitake mushroom was comprehensively examined compared with hot air drying (HAD) and vacuum freeze-drying (VFD). AID considerably improved the characteristic flavors (onion-like odor and umami) of dried mushrooms by partially inhibiting enzymatic and Maillard reactions. The texture characteristics (rehydration and shrinkage) of AID mushrooms had no significant difference to VFD ones and were better than HAD ones. AID combined the advantages of HAD and VFD technologies and outperformed HAD and VFD in terms of ove…

Enhancing the Extraction Yield from Shiitake Culinary-Medicinal Mushroom, Lentinus edodes (Agaricomycetes), by Pulsed Electric Fields Treatment.

Medicinal mushrooms contain highly valuable substances with proven positive effects on human health. To extract these components, different methods are available. Most of them suffer from individual disadvantages, therefore making them economically unviable. Pulsed electric fields (PEFs) could provide an opportunity to improve these processes. PEFs cause pore formation of cell membranes, facilitating substance transport out of cells. Thus, the influence of this technique on the extraction yield of medicinal mushrooms was studied for the first time. Lentinus edodes was used as model case and PE…

In Vitro-In Silico Comparison of Pulsed Oxygen Delivery From Portable Oxygen Concentrators Versus Continuous Flow Oxygen Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) deliver oxygen in intermittent pulses. The challenge of establishing equivalence between continuous flow oxygen and nominal pulse flow settings on different POCs is well known. In vitro bench measurements and in silico mathematical modeling were used to compare the performance of 4 POCs versus continuous flow oxygen by predicting the FIO2 at the trachea and entering the acini. METHODS: Each of the 4 POCs was connected to a 3-dimensional printed replica of a human adult nasal airway via nasal cannula. A test lung simulated 3 breathing patterns r…

Intense pulsed light vs silicone gel sheet in the management of hypertrophic scars: an interventional comparative trial in the Indian population.

Introduction: Hypertrophic scars are abnormal scars that are a source of great functional, psychological and financial burden to the patient. Currently available treatment modalities are either very cumbersome to use or have not provided very satisfactory results. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy for the management of hypertrophic scars has been recently introduced. However, most of the studies available are from the Western population. In this trial, we aim to study the effect of IPL on the South Indian population with darker skin and compare it with an existing treatment modality (silicone…

Pulsed electromagnetic fields and platelet rich plasma alone and combined for the treatment of wear-mediated periprosthetic osteolysis: An in vivo study.

UNLABELLED: Wear-mediated osteolysis is a common complication occurring around implanted prosthesis, which ultimately leads to bone loss with mechanical instability and the need for surgical revision. At the moment, revision surgery is the only effective treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) and platelet rich plasma (PRP), alone and in association, in a clinically relevant in vivo model of periprosthetic osteolysis. Titanium alloy pins were implanted intramedullary in distal femurs of male inbred rats and, after osseointegration, p…

The concerted movement of the switch region of Troponin I in cardiac muscle thin filaments as tracked by conventional and pulsed (DEER) EPR.

The absence of a crystal structure of the calcium free state of the cardiac isoform of the troponin complex has hindered our understanding of how the simple binding of Ca2+ triggers conformational changes in troponin which are then propagated to enable muscle contraction. Here we have used continuous wave (CW) and Double Electron-Electron Resonance (DEER) pulsed EPR spectroscopy to measure distances between TnI and TnC to track the movement of the functionally important regulatory 'switch' region of cardiac Tn. Spin labels were placed on the switch region of Troponin I and distances measured t…
