BACKGROUND: In paralysed limbs quite often edemas are seen, which might pose problems during rehabilitation. The origin of these edemas is not fully understood.
METHODS: 48 patients with hemiplegia and edema of the paralysed arm were studied; in 40 patients lymphoscintigraphic studies (static and dynamic lymphography) were performed.
RESULTS: In 80% of these cases lymphatic flow in the paralysed arm was increased compared to the healthy arm. If there was marked edema in the paralysed arm, the increase of lymph flow was considerable (p < 0.01).

OBJECTIVE: The importance of preoperative 99mTc Sestamibi (MIBI) scintigraphy in case of reoperation for persistent hyperparathyroidism is well recognized, but it use as a systematic exploration technique remains a question of debate. We conducted this study to determine whether preoperative MIBI scans performed in all cases before surgery have any real impact.
METHOD: Two successive series of 65 operated patients were included in the study. In the first group, the MIBI scan was not performed prior to surgery while in the second group the MIBI scan was part of the systematic work-up.

The aim of the study was to evaluate diagnostic validity of captopril test and scintigraphic test before and after captopril for the detection of renovascular hypertension (RVH) according to applied criteria. Employing blood pressure response to captopril as a criteria sensitivity was 37.0%, specificity 92.1%, positive predictive value 75.0% and negative predictive value 70.2% in the captopril test. Prostatic cancer is the most frequent neoplasm in man, usually it is revealed in the course of study of unknown origin bone metastasis. Pulmonary involvement is normally detected through clinical symptoms or an chest X-ray altered showing intraparenchymatous nodules or a carcinomatous lymphangitis pattern. We present a case of a patient with prostatic cancer and bone metastasis in whom during the extension study we detected endobronchial metastasis. Endobronchial involvement is exceptional in prostatic cancer; through bibliographical review we have only found 12 similar cases published.

A 12-year-old girl who underwent a splenectomy followed by heterotopic splenic autotransplantation for treatment of hypersplenism secondary to Gaucher disease at the age of 3 years presented with acute lower abdominal pain. Radiological investigations were highly suggestive of torsion of the autotransplanted splenic tissue, which was confirmed during subsequent laparotomy. This is the first known report of torsion of autotransplanted splenic tissue.

We report a rare case of hypogenesis of the right lobe of the liver with portal hypertension and a review of 31 cases of agenesis or hypogenesis of the right hepatic lobe reported in Japan. In this article, excellent uptake is reported by an In-111 labeled bleomycin complex (BLMC) in the ethmoid region of a histologically confirmed olfactory neuroblastoma. The classical presentation of acute reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) or triple-phase bone scintigraphy usually consists of increased periarticular uptake in each phase. Metastatic calcification within soft tissue, such as the lung and stomach, is associated with hyperparathyroidism, chronic renal failure, hemodialysis, metastatic neoplasm and hypervitaminosis D. Bone scanning agents variably accumulate within these extraskeletal metastatic calcifications. We report a patient with primary hyperparathyroidism whose bone scan revealed abnormal uptake in the liver, lung, stomach and parathyroid gland followed by complete resolution of extraskeletal uptake less than 1 wk after parathyroidectomy.

This study is to analyze gastric emptying (GE) of 99mTc tagged solid meals in 43 gastric ulcer (GU), 16 duodenal ulcer (DU) patients, and 15 normal subjects. Diagnosis of active ulcers had been made through high gastrointestinal endoscopy. The patients with GU were divided into three groups according to Johnson's classification. Gastric contents were measured at 15 minute intervals over a period of 150 minutes, with the person standing in front of a gamma-counter.
