A method for the analysis of the triacylglycerols from animal and human adipose tissue has been developed by combining high-performance liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography (HPLC) and (GLC). Following isolation by thin-layer chromatography, the triacylglycerols are chromatographed by HPLC on a 5-micron Spherisorb ODS column with a gradient of 45 to 60% 2-propanol in acetonitrile as the mobile phase. Vitamin B1- and B-deficient encephalopathy was produced in adult Wistar rats and the effect of methylcobalamin was studied. These experiments were performed in vitamin B1- or B-deficient rats with or without the administration of guanidine, a magnesium antagonist. We examined the developing synaptic junctions in the rat frontal cortex in cases of fetal alcohol syndrome, the objective being to determine the synapse-mental retardation relationship. On day 21 of gestation, the ultrastructural synaptic junction revealed no obvious differences between the ethanol-exposed and control rats; however, the number of synapses in ethanol-exposed rats was one third that of the controls. The possible relationship between synaptic density in the frontal cortex and mental development has to be considered.

The effect of barbiturates on an adenylate cyclase system in rat brain was examined. The activity of the catalytic unit of this system isolated from the synaptic membrane was inhibited by phenobarbital in dose- and time-dependent manners. Cardiac ultrastructure was studied in spontaneously diabetic BB rats maintained on two different regimens of insulin daily. For 3 months from the onset of overt diabetes, one diabetic group was well controlled with daily subcutaneous administration of sufficient insulin to prevent glycosuria (9.0-13.0 U/kg). Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of 210 spontaneous ovarian tumors from 7748 Sprague-Dawley rats are described. The tumors were classified as tubular adenoma, anaplastic adenocarcinoma, papillary cystadenoma, papillary cystadenocarcinoma, mesothelioma, sertoliform tubular adenoma, Sertoli's cell tumor, granulosa cell tumor, thecal cell tumor, polycystic sex cord/stromal tumor, and lipoid cell tumor. The histogenesis of the tumor types is discussed.
