Novel Tretinoin 0.05% Lotion for the Once-Daily Treatment of Moderate-to-Severe Acne Vulgaris in an Asian Population.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common problem among Asian adolescents and adults. Generally, Asian skin is more pigmented, with a higher risk of acne sequelae. Potential for skin irritation and dryness, as well as pigmentary changes are key concerns that can have significant impact on Quality of Life (QoL). The first lotion formulation of tretinoin was developed using novel polymeric emulsion technology to provide an important alternative option to treat acne patients who may be sensitive to the irritant effects of other tretinoin formulations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability, and saf

Phase 1, randomized, rater and participant blinded placebo-controlled study of the safety, reactogenicity, tolerability and immunogenicity of H1N1 influenza vaccine delivered by VX-103 (a MIMIX microneedle patch [MAP] system) in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: The MIMIX platform is a novel microneedle array patch (MAP) characterized by slowly dissolving microneedle tips that deploy into the dermis following patch application. We describe safety, reactogenicity, tolerability and immunogenicity for MIMIX MAP vaccination against influenza. METHODOLOGY: The trial was a Phase 1, exploratory, first-in-human, parallel randomized, rater, participant, study analyst-blinded, placebo-controlled study in Canada. Forty-five healthy participants (18 to 39 years of age, inclusive) were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive either 15 μg or 7.5 μg of a

Solar lentigines are strongly related to sun exposure in contrast to ephelides.

Solar lentigines and ephelides are different types of pigmented skin lesions predominantly present on sun-exposed skin. Both lesions are risk indicators for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Solar lentigines are considered as a sign of photodamage although well-conducted epidemiological studies are lacking on this subject. Ephelides are associated with fair skin type and red hair. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation of sun-exposure estimates with solar lentigines and ephelides. In the Leiden Skin cancer Study 577 patients with malignant melanoma and/or non-melanom

The characteristics of aromatase deficient hairless mice indicate important roles of extragonadal estrogen in the skin.

The roles of extragonadal estrogen in the skin are poorly understood, due to the lack of proper animal models. We examined the skin phenotypes of aromatase-knockout hairless (ArKO) mice and wild-type hairless (WT) mice, both of which were obtained through crossbreeding of Ar+/- mice and hairless mice. Differences in the skins of ArKO and WT mice were compared with those of ovariectomized (OVX) and control (Sham) mice. A difference was observed in the skin tone of ArKO mice, which is pale white and differs from the pinkish tone of all other mice. However, both ArKO and OVX mice similarly exhibi

Acanthosis nigricans - a potentially useful clue to the presence of significant occult disease at autopsy.

A 19-year-old male was found dead in his apartment. At autopsy he was morbidly obese (Body mass index; BMI - 40.5) with multiple areas of velvety pigmented thickening of the skin in folds around the neck, in the axillae, in the inframammary regions, over the anterior waistline and groin regions and over the dorsal aspects of the feet. These had the typical appearance of acanthosis nigricans. Internal examination revealed aspiration of gastric contents into the airways. Vitreous humour biochemistry showed markedly elevated levels of both glucose (62.9 mmol/L) and β-hydroxybutyrate (13.54 mmol/L

Melanoma Mimicker: Pigmented Mammary Paget Disease in a Man.

Male breast cancer comprises less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. Mammary Paget disease (MPD) represents a subset of breast cancer that presents with skin changes of the nipple and areola, and is frequently misdiagnosed clinically due to similarities with other disease states, leading to an average delay in diagnosis of 1 month to 2 years. Pigmented mammary Paget disease (PMPD) is an uncommon variant of MPD that clinically and histologically resembles malignant melanoma. Due to variable immunohistochemical staining patterns, analysis can be challenging and often requires interpretation of

Case Report of Conjunctival Melanoacanthoma.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe a case of conjunctival melanoacanthoma, an exceedingly rare condition that has yet to be fully described in the literature. METHODS: Melanoacanthomas are most commonly seen on the skin or oral mucosa and are believed to result from local irritation or trauma. A 34-year-old Hispanic man presented with a painless, solitary, pigmented conjunctival lesion, in addition to bilateral pterygia suggesting chronic solar damage. The lesion was excised and sent for analysis. RESULTS: Histopathologic analysis of tissue samples demonstrated melanocyte pro

Recurrent Erythema Nodosum in a Child with a SHOC2 Gene Mutation.

We report the case of a 6-year-old male who developed recurrent erythema nodosum (EN) at the age of 3 years. The patient exhibited hypertelorism, low-set ears, micrognathia, moderate intellectual disability, thin long fingers, loose anagen hair, and prominent palmoplantar wrinkles. A heterozygous single nucleotide variant in the SHOC2 gene (c.4 A > G, p.S2G) was identified. Patients with a SHOC2 mutation exhibit a unique combination of ectodermal abnormalities including darkly pigmented skin and loose anagen hair. This report is the first to describe EN in a patient with SHOC2 mutation, and to

Metastatic choroidal melanoma to the contralateral eye: a rare case.

Uveal melanoma is the most common adult primary intraocular cancer. Although liver metastasis is common to the natural history of the disease, metastasis to the fellow eye is extremely rare. Here we report the case of a 59-year-old man with choroidal melanoma in his right eye who underwent enucleation at a different center. The patient was referred to our service 21 months postoperatively, complaining of decreased vision. He was found to have a new pigmented choroidal tumor in his left eye associated with liver disease. Ocular ultrasonography and liver biopsy with histopathological and immunoh

Familial Forms of Cushing Syndrome in Primary Pigmented Nodular Adrenocortical Disease Presenting with Short Stature and Insidious Symptoms: A Clinical Series.

Cushing syndrome (CS) is a rare disease in children, frequently associated with subtle or periodic symptoms that may delay its diagnosis. Weight gain and growth failure, the hallmarks of hypercortisolism in pediatrics, may be inconsistent, especially in ACTH-independent forms of CS. Primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD) is the rarest form of ACTH-independent CS, and can be associated with endocrine and nonendocrine tumors, forming the Carney complex (CNC). Recently, phenotype/genotype correlations have been described with particular forms of CNC where PPNAD is isolated or as

Familial progressive hyperpigmentation: A family resurvey and ultrastructural skin investigation.

Familial progressive hyperpigmentation (FPH) is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by hyperpigmented patches that increase in size and number with age. Since its initial description in an African-American family in 1971, only a few cases of FPH have been documented. A three-generation family with FPH in central China has also been reported. Here, we resurveyed that Chinese FPH family for a few unusual features including delayed age of onset and noninvolvement of ocular and oral mucosae. Electron microscopic examination of skin from the proband of the family showed that there we

Low level light therapy and tattoos: A case report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Physical therapists (PTs) frequently provide neuromusculoskeletal treatment for patients who incidentally may have one or more tattoos. Low level light therapy (LLLT) is one of the modalities commonly used by physical therapists to decrease pain and facilitate healing. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 22 year old man who was given LLLT to address his complaints of musculoskeletal pain. OUTCOMES: Blistering of the skin was documented over the LLLT application site, a black tattoo. DISCUSSION: The blisters, which formed after the LLLT treatment were most

Immediate debridement of road rash injuries with Versajet® hydrosurgery: traumatic tattoo prevention?

UNLABELLED: Traumatic tattoos can result from accidental deposition of foreign particles in the dermis. These pigmented particles become permanently lodged in the dermis after re-epithelialization of the wound and can give rise to irregular black or blue discoloration of the skin. Different methods for tattoo removal exist. The best strategy is to prevent traumatic tattooing by immediate removal of the foreign bodies before the healing process has begun. We present a fine-tuned debridement method to selectively debride the wound and preserve as much viable tissue as possible. LEVEL OF EVIDENC

Cutis tricolor parvimaculata in two patients with ring chromosome 15 syndrome.

Two unrelated girls presented with multiple disseminated, paired, small café-au-lait spots and hypopigmented macules, suggesting didymosis (twin spotting). The girls also had growth retardation, microcephaly, hypertelorism, triangular facies, and a 46,XY, r(15) karyotype. The term cutis tricolor parvimaculata has been proposed to describe a twin spot phenomenon characterized by small, paired hypochromic and hyperchromic macules on a background of normal intermediate-pigmented skin. It has been hypothesized that the underlying gene locus of this phenomenon is a hot spot for postzygotic recombin

Monozygotic twin discordance for phacomatosis cesioflammea further supports the post-zygotic mutation hypothesis.

Phacomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a group of sporadic skin disorders combining widespread cutaneous capillary malformations and pigmented nevi. Etiopathogenesis of the various forms of PPV is unknown, although a non-allelic twin spotting has been proposed as the most likely underlying mechanism. We report on the second instance of monozygotic twin discordance for PPV. Identical twins were observed shortly after birth, one affected by PPV and the other healthy, except for a standard Mongolian spot. Membrane examination was compatible with a monochorionic diamniotic pregnancy, and microsa

Genetic and molecular aspects of McCune-Albright syndrome.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is characterized by the clinical triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, café-au-lait pigmented skin lesions and endocrinopathy (1,2) The molecular lesion in MAS is a postzygotic mutation in the GNAS gene that leads to activation of Gsalpha, the alpha chain of the heterotrimeric G protein, Gsalpha. Cells that carry the activating mutation are distributed in a mosaic pattern. A clinical diagnosis of MAS can be made when a patient is found to have at least two features of the classical triad (3). Because of the restricted pattern of distribution of the GNAS mutatio

Widespread tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton rubrum with non-typical cultural characteristics--diagnosis via PCR.

From the epidemiological point of view, Trichophyton rubrum is the most important dermatophyte in the Western world. Mostly, the lesions of fungal infections of the skin are restricted and circumscribed. Immunodeficiency, diabetes or treatment with steroids, however, favour widespread disease involving the entire integument. In the present study, we describe a patient without immunodeficiency or diabetes presenting with widespread tinea corporis caused by T. rubrum. The fungal isolate showed atypical morphological features. Moreover, the typical metabolic features (negative urease test, produc

A rare case of primary malignant melanoma of the scrotum diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration.

We report a case of a 55-yr-old man with malignant melanoma of scrotum. He was referred to our Hospital with a complaint of gradual focal enlargement of the scrotum in a period of 3 yr. On physical examination, a pigmented, poorly marginated mass, with central necrosis was observed. A fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the lesion was performed. Cytological examination revealed highly cellular smears, containing malignant cells, dispersed or arranged in loose aggregates. Cellular morphology and characteristics were identical to those of malignant melanoma arising elsewhere in the skin. The immunoc
