Clinical study on idiopathic CNS hypersomnolence.

Although idiopathic CNS hypersomnolence is the third most frequent hypersomnia diagnosis, the syndrome is still unfamiliar to physicians, especially in Japan. In the Sleep Disorders Clinic of Kurume University Hospital, seven patients were diagnosed as idiopathic CNS hypersomnolence. All the patients complained of persistent daytime sleepiness, difficulty in morning awakening and lengthening of nocturnal sleep. Their daytime sleepiness had not been reduced even when they have taken sufficient nocturnal sleep. Various autonomic symptoms were observed, but what has noticeably been absent were ca

Interactive effect of sleep duration and trouble sleeping on frailty in chronic kidney disease: findings from NHANES, 2005-2018.

BACKGROUND: Both sleep disorders and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are recognized as significant public health concerns. In the general population, sleep disorders have been shown to be associated with frailty in the elderly. This study aims to evaluate the association between sleep duration and trouble sleeping with frailty in CKD patients, as well as the potential interactive effect between these two factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2005-2018. Sleep duration and trouble sleeping was self-rep

Pilot study to investigate sleep and breathing related complications in children and young people with osteogenesis imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Children with the rare bone disease osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) suffer from difficulty sleeping, and breathing problems during sleep, which can affect their long-term physical and mental health, and consequently their quality of life. In addition, children and young people with OI have structural and soft tissue changes which could affect breathing both during sleep and in relation to lung function. Although commonly reported, we do not fully understand how many children are affected, the specific causes (and hence the most effective treatment) and how best to identify these sleep

Sex and Sleep Quality Effects on the Relationship Between Sleep Disruption and Pain Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects around 20% of the global population and is influenced by various factors, including sleep quality. Studies indicate that sleep disruption can enhance pain sensitivity; however, it is unclear how sex and baseline sleep quality impact these findings. This study examines how sex and baseline sleep quality impact the effects of three nights of sleep disruption on pain sensitivity in healthy individuals. METHODS: Fifty-nine participants (30 females) underwent two laboratory sessions, separated by three nights of sleep disruption. Pain sensitivity was measured using

Effect of non-invasive mechanical ventilation on sleep and nocturnal ventilation in patients with chronic respiratory failure.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory failure (CRF) is associated with nocturnal hypoventilation. Due to the interaction of sleep and breathing, sleep quality is reduced during nocturnal hypoventilation. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NMV), usually performed overnight, relieves symptoms of hypoventilation and improves daytime blood gas tensions in patients with CRF. The time course of the long term effect of NMV on sleep and breathing during both spontaneous ventilation (withdrawing the intervention) and NMV was investigated in patients with CRF due to thoracic restriction. METHODS: Fifteen c

Childhood Trauma, Perceived Stress, and Developmental Trajectories of Sleep Problems in Adolescents.

Both childhood trauma as a stressful event and perceived stress as stress appraisal increase the risks of sleep problems, particularly among adolescents. However, how childhood trauma and perceived stress exert a combined effect on the development of sleep problems in adolescence remains unclear. The present study investigated the heterogeneous developmental trajectories of sleep problems among adolescents, and whether childhood trauma and perceived stress sequentially or interactively affected the heterogeneous trajectories of sleep problems. Altogether 197 adolescents completed the Childhood

Residual Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and New Pharmacological Possibilities for Treatment.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is one of the most important symptoms in obstructive sleep apnoea and it is often used to decide whether the latter should be diagnosed as a syndrome or considered a priority in diagnosis and treatment, and whether the treatment is effective. Beyond this, one concept of enormous clinical significance has emerged: "residual excessive daytime sleepiness", defined as excessive daytime sleepiness in the context of a diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea that is treatable with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or alternatives to it; it appears as a consequence of p
