Identifying community healthcare supports for the elderly and the factors affecting their aging care model preference: evidence from three districts of Beijing.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese tradition of filial piety, which prioritized family-based care for the elderly, is transitioning and elders can no longer necessarily rely on their children. The purpose of this study was to identify community support for the elderly, and analyze the factors that affect which model of old-age care elderly people dwelling in communities prefer. METHODS: We used the database "Health and Social Support of Elderly Population in Community". Questionnaires were issued in 2013, covering 3 districts in Beijing. A group of 1036 people over 60 years in age were included in the s

Digital self-presentation inauthenticity and psychological distress among youth: a combined serial and parallel mediation model through online social comparison, digital identity confusion, and fear of missing out.

BACKGROUND: Modern youth navigate a complex duality between their physical selves and curated digital personas. This study investigated the relationship between digital self-presentation inauthenticity (DSPI) and psychological distress (PD) among Malaysian youth. Integrating the dramaturgical framework, self-discrepancy theory, and social comparison theory, the research tested three primary pathways: a serial chain mediated by online social comparison (OSC) and digital identity confusion (DIC), and two parallel pathways mediated independently by OSC and fear of missing out (FoMO). METHODS: A

Understanding Obesity through a Public Health Lens.

Obesity is a complex and chronic public health challenge that reflects deep-rooted social, economic, and environmental determinants rather than solely individual choices. Its global prevalence has risen sharply over recent decades, affecting more than one in eight people worldwide, with a growing burden in low- and middle-income countries. This paper explores obesity as a complex and growing public health challenge that extends beyond individual behavior. It highlights the social, economic, and environmental factors driving the epidemic, with a focus on the Indian context where undernutrition

Characterization of new obsidian sources, artifact provenance, and inferred patterns of mobility and social dynamics in the Ethiopian Middle Stone Age.

Geochemical provenance of obsidian artifacts provides critical insights into prehistoric mobility, resource exploitation strategies, and group interactions. Despite Ethiopia's abundant obsidian outcrops and extensive archaeological record, the scope of provenance studies has been limited by several yet unidentified geological sources. This study integrates newly discovered geological obsidian sources from the Afar Rift with the characterization of >100 Middle Stone Age (MSA) artifacts-the largest single study of its kind-to reconstruct the patterns of raw material procurement, mobility, and so

Perceived correctional climate and suicidal ideation among inmates in Nigerian correctional centres.

This study examined the relationship between perceived correctional climate factors (activity, emotional feedback, freedom, privacy, safety, social structure, and support) and suicidal ideation among inmates in Nigerian correctional Centres. Using a descriptive, cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from a purposive sample of 210 inmates across two major correctional facilities in southern Nigeria. The prison environment inventory (PEI) was used to assess seven dimensions of correctional climate, while the Beck scale for suicide ideation (BSS) measured suicidal ideation. Data were

Building bridges, breaking silos: a social network analysis of collaboration in an implementation science center for addiction health services.

BACKGROUND: Large scale collaborative or research centers are designed to accelerate scientific progress, promote sustained collaboration, and bridge gaps across areas of expertise. Traditionally, metrics of evaluation for such centers have focused on quantifiable outcomes, such as number and impact of publications. These take time to materialize yet formation, growth, and evolution of collaborative ties, which are fundamental to achieve these quantifiable outcomes, are seldom examined. PURPOSE: To investigate collaborative ties, we applied social network analysis to the NIH-funded Center for

Artisanal brick kilns in Mexico: socio-environmental impacts, health effects, and regulatory challenges.

Artisanal brick kilns (ABKs) in Mexico operate predominantly under conditions of informality, poverty, and limited regulatory oversight. This narrative review integrates scientific literature, institutional reports, and regulatory documents to examine the socio-environmental impacts, health effects, and regulatory challenges associated with ABKs in Mexico, complemented by a state-level descriptive ecological analysis linking social deprivation and the territorial distribution of brick-kilns units. Evidence indicates that artisanal brick production is spatially and socially embedded in marginal

Salutogenesis for health promotion: tensions and future directions for physical activity/active living research.

A binary view of health, categorizing individuals as either healthy or diseased, has directed much of physical activity research toward evidencing its biomedical benefits. Physical activity is positioned primarily as a means of reducing risk or preventing illness with an appropriate lifestyle modification (e.g. meeting guidelines), reinforcing a pathogenic perspective. A salutogenic perspective, grounded in the 'dis-ease-ease' continuum, emphasizes health as a dynamic process rather than a fixed state. Within this continuum, physical activity is seen not only as preventive but also as a resour

Social Network Clustering Analysis for Detection of Associated Genetic Co-Mutations in Patients with Actionable Driver Mutations in NSCLC.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exhibits genomic heterogeneity that affects tumor immunogenicity and PD-L1 expression. Patient clustering based on shared mutational profiles using social network analysis (SNA) has been narrowly explored. The study aimed to identify subgroups of NSCLC patients with similar somatic mutation profiles using network-based modularity clustering, and to compare these groups with respect to PD-L1 expression, Tumor mutation burden (TMB), and clinical variables. Data of patients with stage 4 (metastatic) NSCLC, whose tumor tissue samples were collected between 2022 a

Gender-specific associations among trauma type, sociodemographic conditions, and posttraumatic stress symptom severity: Evidence from a nationally representative Icelandic sample.

Trauma exposure is associated with a range of adverse mental health and sociodemographic factors. However, gender-specific patterns related to distinct trauma types and social variables remain underexplored. Using cross-sectional data from a nationally representative sample of 1,766 Icelandic adults randomly selected from the national population registry (n = 930 women, n = 836 men, Mage = 49.6 years), we examined posttraumatic stress symptom (PTSS) severity across trauma types and sociodemographic factors, focusing on gender differences. Trauma exposure was assessed using the Life Events Chec

Physical Activity for Youth Mental Health in the "Online Era": Risks, Opportunities, and Implementation Priorities.

Today's young people (aged ∼10-24 y) are the first "digital natives" but have become the most sedentary generation on record. These trends have coincided with a widely recognized decline in youth mental health, prompting increasingly polarized debate: some attribute the crisis primarily to smartphones and social media, but large-scale analyses suggest more heterogeneous population-level effects. Therefore, this review examines the role of physical activity (PA) in mental health during the online era; considering how different forms of online engagement relate to youth mental health, with regar
