BACKGROUND: There is a high incidence of end-stage renal disease in Asians originating from the Indian subcontinent living in the UK. Research to date has focused on the cause of renal disease in Indo-Asians, and their outcome on peritoneal dialysis (PD) is less well studied.
AIM: To determine whether nutrition, adequacy of dialysis, and outcome of Indo-Asian patients on PD were similar to those of White European patients.
DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal observational study over 2 years.
METHODS: We enrolled 35 Indo-Asians and 35 White Europeans on peritoneal dialysis, closely matched for

Children living in conditions of severe socioeconomic (SES) hardship are at elevated risk for neurocognitive delays, yet most developmental neuroscience research has focused on children in high-income, Western populations, limiting our understanding of diverse developmental contexts. This study examined maternal perceived social support as a potential buffer against the stressors associated with SES hardship on child neurocognitive development in a longitudinal sample of Indigenous families in the rural Ecuadorian Amazon. Twenty-eight children (M age = 28.02 months at T1; 57.6 months at T2) pa

Socioeconomic position (SEP) influences cancer care and outcomes, even in countries with government-funded healthcare. This population-based study examined associations between SEP, rectal cancer care and survival of patients in the Netherlands. Data from 25,995 patients with Stage I-III rectal cancer diagnosed between 2015 and 2023 were obtained from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. SEP was categorised as lower, intermediate or higher using income-based postal code data. Associations between SEP and detection method, treatments, and outcomes were analysed using multivariable logistic regressi

This grounded theory study examines how socioeconomically disadvantaged and predominantly Black fathers construct fatherhood identity amid systemic adversity. Drawing on 11 focus groups with 40 fathers enrolled in a U.S. Midwestern fatherhood program, the study explores the multidimensional nature of fatherhood and the ways in which structural, interpersonal, and identity-based factors shape paternal engagement. Using iterative coding and comparative analysis, findings reveal three central themes: (a) evolving dimensions of engaged fatherhood that transcend biological ties and traditional patr

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depressive symptoms are prevalent yet frequently overlooked. Few studies in China have characterised heterogeneity in depressive symptom trajectories across multiple time points from pregnancy to the postpartum period. This study examined patterns of perinatal depressive symptoms and factors associated with differences between trajectories.
METHODS: Women were recruited from a prospective cohort and assessed repeatedly from early mid-pregnancy to three months postpartum. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Sociodemographic, p

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health challenge associated with substantial physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences. Although its clinical outcomes have been extensively investigated, less is known about how individuals progressively reconstruct their lives while living with an irreversible condition requiring long-term dialysis, particularly in contexts characterized by health inequities. This study aimed to develop a substantive theory explaining how adults reconstruct their lives while living with CKD on dialysis. A qualitative study was conducted using St

BACKGROUND: Risk-factor-based community screening has been used to identify early liver disease. Risk-factor prevalence and liver-related outcomes are significantly affected by socioeconomic deprivation. However, the impact on targeted community screening is unknown. We evaluated the influence of deprivation on fibrosis detection within a population screening pathway.
METHODS: A total of 1613 patients were assessed using 2 pathways: Proactive case finding at 7 primary care practices (PCPs) and a comparator standard-of-care pathway. Individuals with specific risk factors were identified: obesi

BACKGROUND: Maternity blues (MBs) are mild and self-limiting depressive symptoms that occur within the first weeks postpartum. However, failure to identify and manage affected mothers can lead to maternal emotional and cognitive impairment, disrupt infant care, and increase the risk of postpartum depression (PPD), infanticide, or suicide. The average prevalence of maternity blues in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is 39%, with 10–15% of affected mothers progressing to PPD. Therefore, providing timely support and management to mothers experiencing maternity blues is crucial to prevent this progression

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and intensified structural inequities at the nexus of ageing, migration, and socioeconomic vulnerability. These overlapping disadvantages resulted in uneven health outcomes and highlighted systemic fragilities in health systems; yet, few policy reviews have integrated these demographic dimensions into a single analytical framework.
OBJECTIVES: This review critically examines how ageing, migration, and socioeconomic disparities intersect to shape health equity during and after the pandemic. It identifies structural bottlenecks, adaptive responses, and

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The components model of addiction outlines six criteria shared by all addictive disorders. This proposal has been widely applied to conceptualize behavioral addictions, including problematic social media use (PSMU). However, certain criteria can be defined as "core" (e.g., mood modification, relapse, withdrawal, conflict), reflecting problematic involvement, while others as "peripheral" (e.g., salience, tolerance), reflecting non-problematic involvement. We evaluated whether a two-factor model distinguishing between core and peripheral criteria provides a better fit than t

This study examined the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) and specific learning disability (SLD) on reading and math developmental trajectories from kindergarten through fifth grade in the U.S. Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten class:2011 dataset. Using a retrospective classification based on SLD status at the end of fifth grade, we compared reading and math skills at school entry and growth over time between children with SLD (N = 540) and their peers without disabilities (N = 8,650). Although most children with SLD were not identified until third grade or later, this group

AIMS: When the etiology of major depression is examined, the existence of psychosocial factors is undeniably important. Inadequate social support and use of dysfunctional coping strategies are psychosocial factors that play a role in the etiology of depression. This study investigated the perceived social support and coping strategies in patients with depression and whether they change with remission.
DESIGN: Both cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys were conducted.
METHODS: This study included 50 patients in the active phase of a major depressive disorder, 30 patients in the remission o

BACKGROUND: Isolation mitigated the risks of COVID-19 infection. For older adults, isolation itself can be harmful. Isolation and loneliness impact nutritional status which leads to other health consequences. This study identified the changes of 167 individuals 80+ years old pre and post COVID-19 isolation and the association of habitation and location.
METHODS: We collected demographic (age, gender, cohabitation, and isolation) and clinical (BMI and nutritional) information from patients 80+ years old prior to and 6 months after COVID-19 began in the region. We collected nutritional data usi
