Obsessive-compulsive disorder and temporal lobe porencephaly: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The functional and structural abnormalities of cortico-striato-thalamo-cortex have been reported to be associated with the neurobiological basis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD can also occur in the striatum damaging after brain infarction, which is called OCD caused by physical diseases. The relationship and mechanism between temporal lobe abnormalities and OCD are still unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A young male with temporal lobe porencephaly presented with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The cognition of this OCD participant was not significantly impaired, and his soc

Social Contributors to Differences in Math Course Attainment Among Adolescents with and without Learning Disabilities and ADHD.

Completing advanced high school math coursework relates to better adulthood outcomes. Our understanding of why youth with learning disabilities (LDs) and/or ADHD have less access to high math course attainment is limited. Using data on around 20,000 adolescents from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, results indicate that, regardless of disability status, structural inequities in family social position are more salient for youth's math course attainment than formal disability programming, universal supports, or structural inequities in how students are sorted across schools. Among you

Best practices for your confirmatory factor analysis: A JASP and lavaan tutorial.

Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) is a fundamental method for evaluating the internal structural validity of measurement instruments. In most CFA applications, the measurement model serves as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. To select the appropriate model, prior validity evidence is crucial, and items are typically assessed on an ordinal scale, which has been used in the applied social sciences. However, textbooks on structural equation modeling (SEM) often overlook this specific case, focusing on applications estimable using maximum likelihood (ML) instead. Unfortunately, sev

Mapping Moral Injury: Comparing Discourses of Moral Harm.

Moral injury is a term whose popularity has grown in psychology and psychiatry, as well as philosophy, over the last several years. This presents challenges, because these fields use the term in different ways and draw their understanding from different sources, creating the potential for contradiction. This, however, is also an opportunity. Comparison between behavioral sciences and philosophy can help enrich understandings of harms considered not just psychological but moral. To this end, I provide an overview of the more influential writing of moral injury, mapping them into three broad dis

In utero cocaine exposure: a thorny mix of science and mythology.

Fetal cocaine exposure has proven to be an area of medicine that has generated more heat than light. Although many reports associate cocaine with a variety of isolated structural anomalies, there is no detectable syndromic clustering, raising doubts about a real causal association or a specific teratogenic action. Potential confounding variables, including the abuse of other drugs, pregnancy deprivations, and socially patterned maternal behaviors, have limited the reliability of observational studies, making it difficult to demonstrate effects solely attributable to cocaine. The clinical expre

[Psychosocial factors in carcinogenesis: on the problem of the so-called cancer-prone personality].

Without distinguishing between the heterogeneous types of the disease which are implied in the term "cancer" a stereotype--the cancer-prone personality--is regarded as the essential cause of the disease. Their striking characteristics are quoted as follows: depressive mood, social conformity, restrained expression of needs and emotions, reduced perception of physical symptoms, etc. In a prebioptical prospective study, basing on semi-structured interviews carried out at two different points of time, with 230 women with breast tumours and 95 patients with a suspected lung cancer, the theory of a

Reframing dementia care in the era of disease-modifying therapies: informational, psychosocial, and systemic insights from Japan.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for Alzheimer’s disease has prompted major changes in diagnostic pathways, referral processes, and service coordination in dementia care. Japan, as an early adopter of DMTs within a nationally coordinated dementia-care framework, offers an opportunity to examine how health service structures respond to these changes. This study explored health service–related support needs emerging across the DMT pathway, focusing on patient and informal caregiver experiences, with complementary perspectives from service providers. METHODS: A q

Residential greenness and wellbeing in the UK: A population-representative intersectional multilevel analysis.

Residential greenness may support wellbeing, but evidence on whether these benefits differ across socially patterned populations remains limited. We examined associations between residential greenness and wellbeing across population strata defined by sex, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) based on data on urban residents from the UK Household Longitudinal Study, a population-representative and ethnically diverse sample from the UK (n = 26,322). Residential greenness was measured using neighbourhood Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI); wellbeing was operationalised as self-rep

Understanding Behavioural Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Prevention Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke disproportionately affect culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. In Australia, CALD describes communities that differ from the dominant population by language, ethnicity and/or cultural beliefs and practices. CALD status often intersects with social disadvantage, including lower socioeconomic position, experiences of discrimination and reduced access to culturally safe health services, contributing to inequities in cardiovascular risk and outcomes. Understanding how these factors influence engagement in CVD and stroke preve

Protocol for a Three-Arm Controlled Trial of Participatory Music Education in University Students.

Participatory music education may offer a practical group-based approach to supporting university student wellbeing, but protocols that separate active music participation from general music exposure remain limited. This article describes a standardized three-arm controlled trial for evaluating the emotional and social outcomes of participatory music education in university students aged 18-26 years. The age range is used to keep the sample developmentally comparable and reduce heterogeneity related to mature, returning, or part-time students. Participants are allocated to a 6-week participato

Patterns and risk factors of illicit substance abuse by Sri Lankan teenagers: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Illicit substance abuse among adolescents is an emerging public health challenge in Sri Lanka, yet evidence on independent risk factors, particularly among high-risk teenagers undergoing rehabilitation, remains limited. Understanding social, familial, peer and school-related determinants is essential to inform targeted prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among adolescents aged 10-17 years. Cases (n=108) were teenagers admitted for inpatient rehabilitation for illicit substance abuse at the Youth Drug Addiction Prevention, Treatment a

Deaf people's experience of the digital transformation of UK healthcare services: a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare services are being transformed with the rapid adoption of digital technology, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, concerns have been expressed around digital exclusion of potentially vulnerable groups such as those experiencing mental health conditions and/or sensory impairment. This study sought to explore deaf people’s experiences of the digital transformation of UK healthcare services and identify opportunities for future service improvement. METHOD: A qualitative study using a social constructionist approach was conducted with data collected using semi

Negative affect and psychotic-like experiences in social workers: mechanisms and the buffering role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Occupational mental health is critical in the high-emotional-labor field of social work. Grounded in the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study investigates the underlying mechanisms linking occupational stress to subclinical psychopathology. Specifically, we propose and test an integrative moderated serial mediation model to explore how Psychotic-like Experiences (PLEs) are statistically associated with Negative Emotion through dual cognitive-affective pathways, and how Mindfulness serves as a vital buffering boundary condition in such associations. METHOD

Defying distance: exercise providers' perspectives on remote physical activity supports for older adults: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Many older adults encounter barriers to participating in physical activity programs, often due to cost, accessibility, and transportation challenges. Implementing feasible and effective remote support strategies may enhance their physical activity participation. This mixed-methods study examines exercise providers' use of remote supports for physical activity among older adults, their perceived effectiveness, and barriers and facilitators to adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. METHODS: Exercise providers (≥18 years) completed a web-based survey (June-September 2020

Parenting pathways to friendship: how Self-Control and emotion management skills mediate preschoolers' social lives in China?

BACKGROUND: Parenting styles have been identified as significant factors influencing children's social behaviors, particularly in their peer interactions. However, the specific mechanisms through which different parenting styles affect these behaviors, particularly among children aged 3-6, remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: Applying the theoretical frameworks of SLT and SRT, this study aimed to explore how authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles affect peer interactions in 3- and 6-year-old children, focusing on the mediating role of self-control and emotion management skills. The Missing Pipeline: Access to Plastic Surgery Reconstruction After Mohs Surgery for Head and Neck Skin Cancers.

BACKGROUND: Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is the gold standard for minimizing damage to healthy tissue surrounding nonmelanoma skin cancer. However, extensive or complex lesions may require reconstructive plastic surgery to restore form, function, and aesthetic outcomes for patients. Social determinants of health (SDOH)-including socioeconomic status, geographic location, healthcare access, and insurance coverage-significantly shape patient outcomes. Disparities in access to MMS and subsequent reconstruction remain underexplored. This review highlights the need for Mohs and reconstructive pl

Teaching health disparities on the road: An experiential educational intervention for doctor of nursing practice students.

AIM: This analysis was conducted to understand the nuanced and underlying benefits and challenges of an experiential educational intervention for DNP students learning how neighborhoods and health disparities may be related. BACKGROUND: Poor social and environmental conditions in many low-income urban neighborhoods are linked to deleterious health outcomes. Many of the structural and political influences are unknown to health providers, which can inhibit their understanding of the social effects on health. One aspect of a new DNP social determinants of health curriculum is a guided community
