Coping and depression in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: While theoretical models of bulimia have tended to emphasize single dimensions of the disorder, such as cognition or depression, … did not appear to differ between the subgroups in this study, there were significant differences in social support seeking among the four groups. DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that bulimic patients who present with the affective and personality disordered dimension of bulimia need interventions that focus on the utilization of social support.

Family practice residents' maternity leave experiences and benefits.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of residents are having babies during residency training. While many businesses are working to improve maternity conditions and benefits for their employees, residency programs are often not prepared to accommodate pregnant residents. This study was conducted to examine the maternity leave experiences of women who delivered infants during their family practice residency training. METHODS: Program directors from each of the 394 family practice residency programs listed in the 1993 Directory of Family Practice Residency Programs were asked to distribute surveys to f

Factors in the long term adjustment of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease: conceptualizations and review of the literature.

This paper focuses on the psychological and social factors that influence the adjustment process of children and adolescents with chronic conditions, primarily sickle cell disease. A review of the literature will reveal that psychological variables, such as anxiety and depression affecting adjustment, are the most studied. However, it will be pointed out that social variables such as family, school, and peers, also play a major role in this process. Furthermore, in keeping with the approach of this special collection, these psychological issues will be discussed within a developmental context.

Problems in relation to independent living: a retrospective study of physically disabled school-leavers.

Problems in relation to independent living were studied in a cohort of 80 physically disabled young people on average five years after leaving school. 38 per cent were living, or planned to live, independently. This group was more likely to be of average intellectual ability and to have a physical impairment other than cerebral palsy. Of the 35 per cent who felt that their physical disabilities were such that they would be unable to manage without care from parents in the family home, at least 80 per cent needed daily help with personal hygiene, dressing and travel. 90 per cent of the parents

HIV infection in women. Implications for nursing practice.

Much remains to be explained regarding women with HIV infection or AIDS. Interest in determining whether the natural history of the disease or the clinical manifestations are gender specific is leading to more research focused on women. The female roles of childbearer and caretaker evoke ethical issues that are unique to this epidemic and that can impact on the development and delivery of health care services. Women at the greatest risk for HIV disease are not likely to form coalitions to advocate for services, research dollars, and education. They need advocates and assistance in becoming uni

[Support following pregnancy termination for genetic indications: experiences of involved women and their partners].

By means of semistructured interviews with 40 women and their partners data were collected concerning on the one hand the care and support and on the other the grieving after termination of pregnancy performed because the child appeared to be genetically affected. Crucial in the grieving process is having to choose personally for or against termination of the pregnancy. This grieving process can be complicated by factors such as uncertainty concerning either the evidence of the disease or its prognosis, high recurrence risk, negative self-esteem, feelings of failure and pre-existent relational

Predicting psychiatric symptoms among homeless people.

Multiple regression was used to predict psychiatric symptoms among homeless people. The following variables were significant predictors of psychiatric symptoms: current life satisfaction, previous psychiatric hospitalization, the number of stressful life events, social support, problem drinking, and childhood unhappiness. The results are discussed in terms of their policy and practice implications, particularly the need for crisis intervention services and for dual-diagnosed clients.

[Psychosocial problems and needs of cancer patients].

A Swedish-American epidemiological study of the psychosocial problems and needs of cancer patients have shown that the personal needs of such individuals are frequently ignored. The Swedish patients requested psychological support more often than the Americans, who instead reported a need for financial assistance. Swedish patients were very rarely offered psychiatric or psychological counselling, while many Americans felt that they had received good support from physicians and other medical personnel. Fourteen per cent of the Swedes and 2.7 per cent of the American patients had no-one to whom

Psychologic characteristics of polio survivors: a preliminary report.

Ninety-three men and women with histories of polio were administered the Symptom Check List-90 Revised (SCL-90R), Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report (PAIS-SR), and a questionnaire about their polio histories. The SCL-90R and PAIS-SR are measures of emotional and psychosocial functioning. Two samples were used: a clinic sample (n = 71) and a postpolio support group sample (n = 22). Initial results for both on the SCL-90R and PAIS-SR indicated elevated scores on a number of subscales. SCL-90R subscale elevated scores for men included those for somatization, depression, anxiety,

Practical and psychological problems for parents of children with epidermolysis bullosa.

Parents of children with epidermolysis bullosa were sent a questionnaire seeking information on problems associated with the condition; 45% replied and their responses are discussed in terms of reported needs. Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is the name given to a group of distinct, inherited disorders which are manifest as an exceptional liability of the skin to blister and ulcerate following mechanical trauma. There are three principal groups: EB simplex, dystrophic EB and junctional EB. All forms of EB simplex are inherited as autosomal dominant traits. These diseases are generally relatively mi

Social goals in girls transitioning to adolescence: associations with psychopathology and brain network connectivity.

The motivation to socially connect with peers increases during adolescence in parallel with changes in neurodevelopment. These changes in social motivation create opportunities for experiences that can impact risk for psychopathology, but the specific motivational presentations that confer greater psychopathology risk are not fully understood. To address this issue, we used a latent profile analysis to identify the multidimensional presentations of self-reported social goals in a sample of 220 girls (9-15 years old, M = 11.81, SD = 1.81) that was enriched for internalizing symptoms, and tested

Physiological synchrony in supportive discussions: An examination of co-rumination, relationship type, and heterogeneity.

During times of stress, we look to close others for support. Social support conversations are critical for relationship maintenance and well-being. Yet, certain ways of talking about problems-such as co-ruminating-can exacerbate stress. Since social support and co-rumination are both dyadic processes, it is important to examine physiological responses during these conversations in a dyadic manner. Little research has examined physiological synchrony of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) during social support conversations or co-ruminative conversations. The current research capitalizes on an…

Transitioning to college: Testing cognitive bias modification for interpretations as an inoculation tool for social anxiety in college first-years.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reducing social anxiety development among incoming college students may improve college adjustment and mental health outcomes. This study tested whether cognitive bias modification for interpretations (CBM-I) reduces social anxiety and increases adjustment during the transition to college, and whether changes in outcomes would be mediated by changes in interpretation biases. METHODS: Participants (N = 73) were randomly assigned to a 3-session weekly CBM-I condition or symptom tracking (ST) control condition. Multilevel models were used to estimate within-person traj
