Fine needle aspiration cytology is an inexpensive, atraumatic technique for the diagnosis of disease sites. This paper describes the technique and illustrates how it may be applied to the management of tumours throughout the body. Enkephalin-like immunoreactivity has been localized to electron-dense secretory granules of cat and piglet carotid bodies and adrenal medullae, horse adrenal medulla, and also to human adrenal medulla and pheochromocytomas using a gold-labeled antibody technique performed at the electron microscopic level. The same granules were also demonstrated to exhibit dopamine-beta-hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity, which suggests a granular colocalization of amines and peptides in catecholamine-storing cells.

Seventy-four patients with 75 examples of granular cell tumors occurring in the gastrointestinal tract and perianal region were studied. Twenty-four were located in the esophagus, eight in the stomach, three in the small bowel, four in the appendix, twenty in the large bowel, and sixteen in the perianal region. 30 patients with definite seronegative juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and 3 patients with tendosynovitis and unclear arthralgia respectively were examined by the nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) test (46 tests).
