Oral complications in bone marrow transplantation patients: recent advances.

This paper presents some of the oral aspects encountered in bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients, as reflected in recent research conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine. Oral infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae were found to be responsible for a large proportion of positive cultures, during different stages of the transplantation process. Mucositis was constantly detected concomitant with the infections. It correlated with granulocytopenia and fever. The mucositis improved together with the immune system reconstitution. Immunoglobulins in saliva of BMT patients showed a drastic redu

Autosomal dominant Muckle-Wells syndrome associated with cystinuria, ichthyosis, and aphthosis in a four-generation family.

Muckle-Wells syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by chronic recurrent urticaria, periodic arthritis, sensorineural deafness, general signs of inflammation, and secondary amyloidosis (AA type). We report on a 4-generation family with 7 persons sharing various signs of this syndrome associated with bipolar aphthosis in 5 cases and cystinuria in one. Two other relatives in the family had ichthyosis.

Orofacial manifestations in primary immunodeficiencies: common variable immunodeficiencies.

The orofacial manifestations of 15 patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiencies (CVID) are reported. Aphthous-like ulceration, pseudomembranous candidosis and/or enamel hypoplasia were observed in 11 patients. Four patients had no orofacial lesions.

[Articular and extraarticular involvement in inflammatory bowel diseases].

Idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease include basically two disorders: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Both diseases are chronic and of unknown etiology and extraintestinal manifestations are seen in a high number of these patients. We studied 18 patients (7 female, 11 male) with previous diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (14 ulcerative colitis, 2 Crohn's disease, 1 pancolitis, 1 ulcerative proctitis) in order to search for extraintestinal manifestations with emphasis on osteoarticular and ocular involvement. The mean age at the time of diagnosis of the inflammatory bowel disease

Uvulitis in three children: etiology and respiratory distress.

Uvulitis is an uncommonly reported disorder with the potential for significant morbidity. We describe three cases of uvulitis seen within a six month period in our emergency department. In two cases with respiratory distress, but without epiglottitis, Haemophilus influenzae was isolated from throat or blood cultures. The third case was associated with group A streptococcus tonsillitis and no respiratory compromise. Atypical presentations of upper airway infection with H. influenzae may be increasingly common.

Accelerated repopulation of mouse tongue epithelium during fractionated irradiations or following single doses.

Mouse tongue mucosa was established as an animal model to study repopulation after large single doses or during continuous irradiation. A top-up irradiation technique was used employing priming doses or fractionated treatment to the whole snout (300 kV X-rays) followed by local test doses (25 kV X-rays) to elicit denudation in a confined field of the inferior tongue surface. Clearcut quantal dose-response curves of ulcer incidence were obtained to all protocols; animal morbidity, i.e. body weight loss was minimal. Repopulation following priming doses of 10 and 13 Gy started with a delay of at

A massive dose of vincristine.

An esophageal cancer patient with bilateral lungs and neck lymph nodes metastases received 24 mg of vincristine instead of vinblastine because of the similarity between the two names, and survived multiorgan derangement. Serious states of central and peripheral neuropathy with muscle atrophy, gastrointestinal disorder, bone marrow suppression and mucocutaneous involvement were all encountered. Although hypotension and syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) were not observed as vincristine's side actions, toxicity to the myocardium, which has not been documented, wa

Glucocorticosteroids and oral medicine.

The article deals with the use of glucocorticosteroids in the treatment of the oral manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in the temporomandibular joint, Pemphigus Vulgaris, Pemphigoid, Erythema Multiforme Exudativum (EME), Lichen Planus (LP), and Recurrent Aphthous Ulcerations (RAU). The benefit from steroids is discussed on the basis of current knowledge of etiology and pathogenesis of the various disorders. All of them are characterized by inflammation which appears secondary to a hypersensitivity reaction against

Firmonertinib 160mg in EGFR-Mutated NSCLC with Brain Metastases After EGFR-TKI Resistance (iFORCE): Clinical Outcomes and Mechanistic Insights.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BM) are frequent in EGFR-mutated (EGFRm) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and remain challenging after prior … dverse events occurred in 13 (56.5%) patients, mostly grade 1; one patient (4.3%) developed grade 3 stomatitis. No treatment discontinuations or treatment-related deaths were observed. DSP revealed distinct EGFR subtype-specific BM ecosystems: exon 19 deletion tumors retained immune-enriched inflammatory programs, whereas L858R-mutated tumors showed tumor-in …
